  • Excellent performance - can't remove nozzle
Size: 1.7mm nozzle Style: Paint Gun
I bought this for three reasons, positives reviews about the quality of finish, the low CFM requirements, and price. Overall, I am pleased with the Neiko 31215A's performance on all three. My primary application is for woodworking. In the past I had problems applying conversion varnish, a notoriously difficult finish to work with. I usually got orange peels finishes that need to be buffed out. The Neiko's finish was quite good. Maybe not perfect, but very close with no need for buffing. I also used it with spar varnish without dilution. I think the 1.7mm nozzle was too small for the thicker spar varnish and that finish was not quite as good. Looks like I will need to thin or buy a Neiko with a larger nozzle for the urethane finishes. Too bad Neiko doesn't have interchangeable nozzles. Rating on finish quality 4.5 stars. The seller's claim that you only need 4.5 cfm is only a slight exaggeration. I used this on two compressors. One was rated at 4.5 cfm at 100psi. The other was rated at 6 cfm at 90 psi. The compressors ran continuously when spraying. But they seemed to keep up well enough. They would continue to run for some time when spraying stopped. I used a 5 gal portable tank in conjunction with the units' 5 gal tank for a total of 10 gals storage. I think with only 5 cfm @ 90 psi and 5 gal capacity the compressor might not be enough. But it performed MUCH better than other HVLP sprayers I have used. Rating on CFM requirements 5 stars. Like others, I was unable to remove the nozzle for cleaning. I tried soaking in xylene and again after use and cleaning. But the nozzle wouldn't budge. I was really worried I would damage the tool if I added more torque. It would be nice to be able to remove the nozzle. But I was able to adequately clean the sprayer with nozzle in place. I removed all other parts and shot a little cleaner through the gun from the inlet and needle holes. At next use everything worked fine. Overall fit and finish is clearly not as nice as a much pricier sprayer I have. But it is still fairly good. The air cap machining was OK, not great. The nozzle, needle and gun itself were fine, but not impressive. Some reviews complained about the aluminum cup being flimsy. I found the cup to be fine, but not robust. It didn't flex when putting on the top, but it probably wouldn't stand up to really heavy pressure. If you accidentally drop the sprayer, the cup would probably bend on the mount and would certainly dent. Under normal use it held up perfectly well. At under $40 the Neiko is an excellent value. That value is lowered by having to buy multiple sprayers to get flexibility in nozzle size. But still, a great purchase. Price rating 5 stars for value and gun quality. ... show more

  • The Best
Size: 1.7mm nozzle Style: Paint Gun
First time HVLP user. The gun was extremely easy to up and adjust. Perfect polycrylic finish on a drawer and 26”x96” oak butcher block desk top. Shot it with very low pressure and high material flow. Just flawless. Highly recommended.

  • Good beginner gun. Parts?
Size: 1.3mm nozzle Style: Paint Gun
This is the first HVLP gun I've ever bought or used. The price was right, and the reviews were generally positive. I would recommend it for other beginners, with some general words of caution. I don't know a whole lot about the finer points of an HVLP gun, and this one did not come with a lot of instructions, but I was able to find plenty of free beginners guide videos and tutorials. You should definitely read/watch these as much as you can. They help a lot. The gun itself has a pretty good weight to it, which makes it feel solid, but your arms may feel a little fatigued after a long painting session, especially if you're reaching over the roof and hood of a full-size truck like I was. All the adjustments functioned well, although I mainly just used the fan control and occasionally the paint volume. I'm not sure about the regulator. I set it for the pressure I wanted, but most of my adjustments were done at the compressor. It felt a little cheap, and the first time I rinsed the gun with solvent, it reacted with the plastic gauge face, and make it very foggy. But its basically redundant anyways, since you have the main regulator on your compressor and the air control knob on the gun. The finish on my car didn't turn out very well. I had orange peel and runs. Although I really don't think the gun had much to do with it. I think it was the environment (open driveway), the moisture in my compressor (no dryer system), and the clogged passages on the gun from when I didn't clean it fully. My only major complain is that I cannot find replacement parts anywhere. One time I didn't clean the gun out very well, and the air jets got clogged with paint. Eventually I had to rod them out with some wire to clear them, but I think by doing that I damaged the brass tip to where it sprayed unevenly. I never could get it to spray a flat pattern after that. Its completely my fault, but I was thinking I could just buy a new tip for $15-$20 somewhere. Unfortunately parts seem to be non-existent. I would have to buy a whole other gun just to get a new tip (although at $38 it still doesn't break the bank). So after one job the gun is basically a throw-away. My advice for beginners like me: Buy this gun, learn as much as you can, and assume that by the end of your first job it'll be completely trashed. And if you still think you want to do your own paint, then come back and shop for a $100 gun. ... show more

  • Simple, cheap, effective
Size: 2.0mm nozzle Style: Paint Gun
I bought this gun to shoot latex. The 2.0mm tip is perfect for spraying latex mixed with Floetrol. It's easy to use, easy to set up and easy to clean. The spray pattern is a little blotchy with latex, but I might need to mix in some more Floetrol. Currently using a 3:1 mix. The application doesn't show any signs of blotchiness after drying. For the price, I would recommend this gun for small projects over a $1300 portable Graco. ... show more
