  • So, it did work for Brienne of Tarth, with some adjustments
OK, for the price, this armor isn't bad. It's actually a pretty good deal. If you have the time to wait for them to make you a set that fits you, I would probably recommend that. But I didn't have time, because I had a deadline coming up. So I ordered it straight from Amazon, no custom, just as it is. First off, I'm 5'8", 180 lb woman. This basic set is probably made for a 6' man with larger shoulders and chest than I have. Thankfully, I have friends who were willing to help me fit it to me, cut it down, and clean up the edges. I bought this to be Brienne of Tarth at the Labryinth of Jareth Ball in LA. For a costume piece, it's really nice. I have done SCA fighting, but I wouldn't wear the shoulders, the gorget, or the arms to fight in. They are the right gauge for fighting, and it is decently made, but the neck design isn't ideal for actual combat. I had a LOT of room between my neck and the edges of the armor, and the gorget is more decorative than protective. But you could likely use parts of it for combat with the right fit and more protection in the delicate bits. The bad - The edges were really sharp at all of the main joins. I wouldn't wear this for combat or hugs without cleaning up the edges on a belt grinder or similar device. It didn't take much time, but I was a bit amazed it arrived without shredding the packaging. Second, the shoulders only strap into the gorget. Great if you want a neck injury, not so good if you actually want to keep your head on your shoulders. We cut off those straps and drilled holes through the shoulders, gorget, and chest at the shoulders to tie everything in at one place on top of the shoulder. Way more balanced, and it keeps things in place. I stomped around all night in boots, and I was relatively comfortable once we got everything fastened properly on my shoulders. Third, the upper back dishing is just silly. If you're into that, great. I didn't feel like I needed more boobs, and it sat rather high to be anything like back muscles. I'd have been happier with just a smooth back piece. Fourth, the shoulders are huge! I would have preferred them about half the size, and I felt like I was going to knock myself or others out from raising my arms. Likely not as bad on someone the right size, but damn. Last, the bottom isn't articulated. Not a terrible thing, I didn't expect much movement, but for a costume piece, sitting down meant armor bites. I have some entertaining bruises on my upper thighs. The good - it is steel, the work is solid, and I was pleasantly surprised. The edges that are rolled are lovely, and the creases along the front are relatively clean and neat. Mine has a bit of a dent on the mid chest, but nothing huge, and frankly, it's armor. I don't expect to keep it pristine. The finish isn't super durable, but I can always buff it down and reblacken it if it gets really beat up. It did rust a bit in the marine air by my house over about 3 weeks, but an oily rag wiped it right off. Keep it cleaned up, and it should look good for a while. It was even, and neatly applied, and looked nice and dark grey to black, just like the pictures. To make it fit me, we cut down the sides under the arms about 2 inches, drilled the shoulder holes, and bent the pieces in to wrap more snugly around my chest. I'm sure if I had actually sent my measurements, it would have fit way better. The straps are good leather, the buckles are solid, and the rivets are more substantial than I expected and evenly set. It arrived relatively quickly, and neatly wrapped, with each piece well oiled and in individual bags. Thanks NauticalMart! This worked out very well for my needs, and I appreciate the fast shipping and solid workmanship. ... show more
