  • All inclusive intro to electronics
Style: 40+ Projects
A kit like this has the ability to teach electricity to young kids in a way that they will understand. It also presents the ideas in a methodical way that is engaging. I think my kids fall into a sweet spot for this kit. They're 4 and 6, with interest in science and have the attention span to try a couple of the 40 available projects at a time. For us, this will make a nice weekly activity that could last most of the year. The components are all made in a very kid friendly way. Very plug and play. While my kids like using tools, in a project setting they can get frustrated waiting for the tools to attach and detach things. This kit is all purpose built to fit together with hands only, I like that. The only piece I worry about is the propeller, it's a little on the delicate side. Ok, maybe there's another piece I worry about: the manual. It's thick, but... there are 40 projects. The bottom line for the kit is that learning toys are different than regular toys. They will work for some, not for others. This is an intro kit. So, if your kids already build robot kits or do their own PLCs then they are probably too old for it. I don't see an official age recommendation, but it seems that first or second grade (able to read and work on their own) is the prime age to try it out. Everything in the kit passes my test of what I expect National Geographic quality and intellectual challenge to look like. If you think your kid wants to be a scientist/electrician/maker/etc. then the worst thing that can happen is they tear through the projects with ease and want something more challenging. My suspicion is that they will enjoy learning how electricity flows. ... show more

  • Perfect for Children, Fun Activities, Good Quality, but a Bit Overpriced
Style: 40+ Projects
This is a great product to introduce children ages 8-10 to electronics. While it can be used with older kids, I feel that this kit is a bit oversimplified and that most tween scientists would learn more with a full circuits kit. My family loves National Geographic products. We have purchased one kit or another nearly every Christmas since my boy was old enough to Science with us. Sometimes the kits let us down just a little, usually because I expect a little more quality for the prices they charge, but we always enjoy them either way. Once again, my issue is the pricing. While the kit is fun and has a nice booklet of various activities, you could definitely easily complete them all in an afternoon and the kit only teaches the absolute basics of circuitry without any room for taking it to the next level. To me, an afternoon project kit (especially one that requires you to provide your own batteries) shouldn't cost more than about $25. The current price of this set is $35, which I absolutely would not pay. That being said, the quality of the pieces is nice, everything functions as it's supposed to, it doesn't require additional tools, and the experiments are all very safe. Some kids might be able to get days of fun out of this kit and for some parents that would probably be worth the price tag. ... show more

  • Quality set, kid friendly
Style: 40+ Projects
What a wonderful kit. Just so many examples of ways to integrate the pieces provided to make projects that are kid friendly. The booklet has multiple (40+) projects increasing in complexity. Instructions are clear, plenty of visuals. Some of the projects build on knowledge gained when assembling previous pieces. The quality one would expect from National Geographic. All set to plug and play. Makes for a neater set. Perhaps not as hands-on as when we had children work with bulbs, wires, and batteries, but this kit, with the included learning guide, is so instructive. This would be an amazing addition to a home-school curriculum. I ordered it for a curious child who is a builder. He and his sister, ages 8 and 6, were exploring immediately. He had a sick day home from school today and this was what he chose to play with. He was reading the booklet and trying all the configurations. ... show more

  • Entertaining

This was great rainy day entertainment for my kid. It was easy enough that she didn’t need too much help, but complex enough to keep her occupied.

  • Great quality and works really well
Style: 40+ Projects
Bought this for my son for his birthday and he really loves it. We have purchased a ton of these National Geographic kits in the past and really have never been let down. The quality is nice and it works really well with a variety of different ways to reuse it. Very neat little learning tool.

  • Great Idea, Wires Don't Work Well
Style: 40+ Projects
My children and I played with this and it's a wonderful idea. The instructions are well made, images look great, and it progressively takes you through the projects, learning along the way. However, the wires are both difficult to seat into the plugs properly (easy for a kid to shove them in at an angle) and they also don't connect very well. We found ourselves on nearly every project having to twist and contort the wires and/or the peripherals (switches, motor, light) so that proper connection could occur to close the electrical circuit. It was very frustrating. I would add that the switches would be more educational if they were transparent. The motor and light as well, but especially the switches. I think there's a great concept here, and almost a good execution, but if the wires/plugs don't work well it kills the whole thing. ... show more

  • Entertaining!
Style: 40+ Projects
Lots of different ways to configure the different components for replayability. Teaching that first 2 + 2 = 4 thing was a little slow going but then it was "How can I do this differently?" and trying every combination and being excited that things work. It's very fun to see those little human brain wheels turn!! We very much enjoy the NatGeo kits and the different ways they make science fun. ... show more
