  • Incomparable
Style: Dual-Opposing 8” Subs/DTS-X/Atmos
The Nakamichi Dragon doesn't get featured in many soundbar showdowns because at its quality, performance and price it has no peers. It's more expensive, but it still offers great value. I acquired Nakamichi mounts for the soundbar and the surround speakers. The soundbar mount has versatile mount points, and once mounted there's still some lateral flexibility to center the soundbar. The mount is discrete and feels solid with the heavy soundbar in place. I mention all of this here because it's also the best wall mounting solution for a soundbar I've seen. Make sure that the HDMI cables you get (for any soundbar) support 48Gbps and have smaller terminators because they need to start bending close to the HDMI ports on the soundbar. The mounts for the surround speakers feel solid and are discrete, but the surround speakers are heavy enough that I recommend hitting a stud. I mounted them on the side walls. The mounts are very easy to use and provide routing for the power cable. The vertical speakers in the surround speakers are angled to reflect off of the ceiling and rotate so they can be aimed at the primary seating area, providing flexibility in where they can be mounted. The room I set this up in has an 8 foot ceiling, the speakers are mounted at seated ear height, and this is the only environment I can speak to. Connecting the surround speakers and subwoofers required pressing one button, and there have been zero connectivity issues. Audio sync has been flawless. (The TV must be plugged in the HDMI port one and whatever port the TV uses for its HDMI ARC/eARC port.) The system doesn't have an automatic calibration feature, but the on-screen menu is easy to use. Just pick the matching physical configuration of the speakers and enter the distance from each speaker to the primary seating area. Sitting off center still provides amazing sound effects' localisation. Some of the setups I've experienced can't maintain this, but the Dragon's speakers and processing shine here. I had to move the subwoofers a few extra inches away from the wall to eliminate some boominess. It eliminated the reflected sounds bad timing and sharpened the bass. There's enough power to drive all of the speakers and maintain clarity throughout the entire frequency range at all volumes, so you don't have to turn it up if you don't want to. But you'll want to. I adjusted the subwoofers' crossover frequency for my preference, but I liked the default levels and settings of all of the other speakers after calibrating for distance. I switch between the Music and Movie modes based on what the source material. I use an Oppo UDP 205 Blu-ray player, Apple TV 4k, PS5 and Nvidia Shield Pro (through the Oppo HDMI IN) as sources. DTS X Pro through the Dragon is amazing, and is currently much, much more expensive to get any other way. Dolby Atmos positioning is so smooth and clear that my dog spins while looking up and around in time with birds circling. Music in surround sound, including Dolby Atmos depends on the quality of the remixing. Sometimes it's more natural sounding or broadens the sound stage wonderfully. Sometimes the positioning of instruments and sounds feel like the artist's intention. Some mixes are distracting in ways that I don't prefer, but this should get better as the industry gains experience with it. When it's done right you feel right there. (The Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense, Taylor Swift - The Eras Tour.) Metallica's Black album is better in stereo in my opinion. Upmixing of movies and music is done really well by the Dragon. It can play and handle anything, and everyone you know will hit their limit before it even gets close to its own. My unit came with the latest firmware, so I never experienced the lower bass mentioned in some reviews. I love it. I love how easy it is was to setup and calibrate. I love how well it handles the variety of sources I throw at it. Most of all I love how it sounds. There's one thing that I wish it did better, which is transition from source to source with less delay before the audio starts. It's definitely not a deal breaker for me. I don't channel surf or constantly switch sources, but I notice the delay when I do. I tried to find comparable setups using separates or soundbars, and they simply don't exist. If this is reasonable for your budget then you can buy it knowing that you can't find anything that can compete with all that it can do so well for anything close to its price. ... show more

  • Dragon with 12" Subwoofers far exceeded my expectations
Style: Dual 12" Subs/DTS-X/Atmos
After years of searching for a true home theater experience without the hassle of a full installation, I was skeptical that any soundbar could deliver. Previous attempts with other popular soundbars, including the Sonos Arc and Samsung Q990D, left me disappointed. They simply couldn’t match the power and clarity of my $22K dedicated theater setup. Then I tried the Nakamichi Dragon, and I was blown away. I recently moved into a new house in Vegas and put together a 9.2.6 system in my 30L x 22W home theater room. My setup includes a Denon AV1H receiver with all Wharfedale EVO speakers, totaling well over $20,000. While I’m thrilled with the theater room, my wife and I wanted something simpler for the living room—something accessible enough for family nights and entertaining guests, but powerful enough to impress. After the Sonos and Samsung didn’t meet our standards, I gave the DRAGON a shot, and I’m extremely glad I did. The Dragon’s unique AMT tweeters were a gamechanger for me. They deliver an unmatched clarity that brought me back to my Wharfedale setup. Unlike other soundbars, this Nakamichi system uses AMTs in both the main bar and surrounds, making vocals razor sharp and effects incredibly immersive. Installation took only 30 minutes—no tangled wires or need for professional help. Despite my living room’s slightly vaulted ceilings and open layout, the Dragon adapted beautifully, filling the room with deep, rich sound. The first movie we watched was Mad Max: Fury Road with Atmos. It was as if Max himself was stomping right next to us—so powerful, you could almost feel the crunch beneath his boots. Every moment comes alive, from the thunderous bass to the crystal clear dialog, and the precision of the surround effects makes it feel like you’re in the center of the action. I tested this system with reference movies like Edge of Tomorrow, Gravity, Dunkirk, and Pacific Rim. The Dragon didn’t just hold its own—it soared. Explosions shook the room, eerie silences felt thick with tension, and the chaotic dogfights were delivered with pinpoint accuracy. The Dragon’s six upfiring height speakers add a whole new layer to the experience, creating height effects that feel truly spectacular. With Atmos soundtracks, these speakers bring an immersive vertical layer that feels incredibly lifelike. During scenes in Gravity, for instance, I could hear debris whizzing overhead with precision, as though it were truly happening above me. In Pacific Rim, when the Jaegers and Kaiju clash, the sound fills the entire room from top to bottom, making each battle feel epic. The upfiring speakers work seamlessly with the rest of the system, allowing you to feel sounds soaring above, whether it’s the swoop of helicopters in Dunkirk or the echoing footsteps in a cavernous environment. For a soundbar system to recreate this level of height and depth so close to the performance of my full Atmos setup is remarkable. The system’s performance is on par with setups costing several times more. Now, we’re spending over 70% of our movie time in the living room with the DRAGON. With technology like this, I’m confident that the DRAGON will set the standard for home theater sound for years to come. For anyone looking to invest in a sound system that won’t need an upgrade anytime soon, this is it. The Nakamichi DRAGON has redefined what I thought a soundbar could do, delivering an immersive, powerful, and refined experience. If you’re on the fence, don’t be. The DRAGON will be the benchmark for soundbars for years to come. I am very tempted to add two more 12” subwoofers, but the only challenge is finding the space - because the sound is already massive. ... show more

  • Blows you away! Literally!
Style: Dual 12" Subs/DTS-X/Atmos
EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE ONE OF THESE! This has got to be the best system I’ve owned. It was very easy to setup. The 12”s are 90lbs, so I recommend having a second person. It can be done with one because I did it, but two would have made it much easier. The sound. OOOOH the sound! It’s better than going to the movie theater. Between Dolby Atmos and DTS:X Pro, this system is nothing shy of wicked. The upfiring speakers bring an incredibly immersive experience. The 2 12” subs (highly recommend) make it feel like the explosions are happening right there! The build quality is obvious. No wires! Some people will sneer at Bluetooth, but this system handles heavy lifting like a champ. You will want to calibrate it. This is nothing new for people that have owned surround sound before. For the newbies, don’t skip this step. It does make a world of difference. I did need to reach out to Nakamichi for something, but they handled it amazingly, and professionally. They stand behind their product. If you ever wind up adding this system to your home, you’ll see why they do. I can’t say enough about how worth every penny the dragon is. Please do yourself a favor and bring this home. You will not regret it. ... show more
