  • A fantastic substitute for fresh chicken.
This is actually better than fresh chicken. I can portion as much or little as I want, hydrated and use it almost every recipe that calls for chicken. Got great flavor, doesn’t shred or fall apart uncooked. I would recommend this to almost anyone.

  • Brilliant pantry staple!! For singles, shut-ins, campers!
Great value for single cook, or housebound! The meat hydrates quickly with the addition of water. The meat is moist, flavorful, unsalted, no additives, no excess packaging. Serving for serving, an economical option to canned, packaged, or deli chicken. No worries about expiration, no need to cook chicken then divide, freeze, etc. obviously, you wouldn’t feed a family of 6 with this chicken on a regular basis. But terrific for camping, pantry staple, and especially for single serving of chicken breast —ready to eat in minutes. Great protein source! ... show more

  • Surprisingly good
I wasn’t sure what to expect but this is really good. Even any unabsorbed water taste like chicken broth. I bought it before a hurricane, because we knew we would loose power for a few days. It’s a pretty big can and I wish there were more size options because once it’s opened it needs to be used up pretty quickly. But it’s very easy to use up in any recipe that needs chicken. From chicken alfredo to stir fried rice, it’s perfect. My picky husband didn’t even complain, in fact he ate extra. Win win! ... show more

  • Tasty! Can Was Very Full
This can was full almost to the brim! Good flavor, nice size pieces (not too small) and rehydrated very well with good texture. I would give five stars except that this is not low PUFA pasture raised chicken (none of the brands I have tried or researched are).

  • Delicious!
I do not purchase dehydrated meat, so this is a new experience to me. I purchased it primarily for making my own cup of soup. This is the second can I have purchased. The first can came with a lot of broken up pieces, but I didn’t know if that was normal, and since I am using in soup, I didn’t really care. This can came with primarily perfect cubes as you can see in the picture. I decided to hydrate a little bit for a quick snack. I didn’t perfectly measure the amounts for hydrating. I just threw a few pieces in boiling water, turned off the stove and popped the lid on. I forgot about it, so I didn’t follow the full directions of remove the lid after x minutes, stir, replace lid, etc. I remembered it about ten minutes later and came back to perfect hunks of chicken that I never would have known were previously dehydrated if I hadn’t done it myself. My dog was very happy to have the excess hydration water dumped in her food, and yeah … she may have gotten a piece or two of the chicken. It is shelf stable for a year after opening, and I see no problem using it before then. I took the first can to work to have for lunches. Second can to stay at home. I don’t think it’s really that expensive for what you get when you hydrate it. ... show more

  • Excellent product, but watch the calorie count
Bottom line up front: This type of food is a great choice for an emergency food supply, especially for sheltering in place or evacuating by vehicle. The #10 cans have a 25-year shelf life, so you can buy them and not worry about rotating your stock for a couple of decades. The biggest downside is that once opened, they need to be used up right away. SHELF LIFE - The #10 cans have a 25-year shelf life (unopened). The biggest downside to #10 cans versus individual pouches is that the 25-year shelf life turns into a 1-week shelf life once they've been opened. Since each can has enough for 10 servings, you'll be eating the same thing for several meals unless you're cooking for a group. TASTE - In my experience, Mountain House food is really tasty. Let me caveat this review by saying that although I've eaten other Mountain House freeze-dried food, I haven't had occasion to open the ones in the #10 cans (see my review of the "Mountain House 72-Hour Emergency Meal Kit"). That having been said, the Mountain House food I have tried has been very, very good tasting -- not just good compared to other survival foods, but good period. I have no reason to expect that these would be any different. WEIGHT/CONVENIENCE - As steel cans, they're reasonably durable and reasonably lightweight (not backpacking light, but you don't have to be a weightlifter to move a large box of them). They do take up a bit of volume, but since the overwhelming majority of long-term emergency scenarios involve sheltering in place or evacuating by vehicle, I wouldn't let that be a deal breaker (personnally, I have a stock of individual pouches just in case I have to leave on foot, but most of my food is in these cans). CALORIES - The problem with most freeze-dried emergency food is that a so-called "serving" has too few calories to meet an adult's energy requirements (2500 a day for men; 2000 a day for women -- more with heavy exertion), so you end up consuming more than you planned. These are no different. So even though a typical can ostensibly contains 10 1-cup servings, you really need to eat two servings per meal to get enough calories to survive -- perhaps more. Plan your purchase accordingly. ... show more

  • Handy to have available when needed
Was fortunate to purchase at a good sale price. Taste and texture simular to soups or frozen meals with chicken when reyradrated. Handy to have for bulking up meals as needed.

  • Haven't tried yet
Haven't used yet and storing for when necessary to use. But highly recommend this brand and we all need to think about food security and prep.
