  • My Favorite Mountain House Meal!
This meal is a staple for my backpacking trips! The flavor of the chicken and dumplings is very good! I would honestly eat it as a regular meal for lunch at work (lol) and I'm not saying it just because anything tastes delicious when out in the backcountry either! The package instructions suggests to let it rehydrate for about 8-9 minutes total, I would suggest for it to sit for an additional 2-3 minutes to properly allow the water rehydrate the dumplings. However, I'm usually impatient and go with suggested time anyways since I'm usually starving after setting up camp and it does give the meal a little bit of added texture which is still pleasant! Like with any Mountain House meal, it's very compact and lightweight so you don't even notice you have a full dinner in your pack. ... show more

  • Omg, So delicious!!
Has this meal while on Appalachian trail and it was SO good that i called them and told them how delicious it was! They were just as excited to hear that as i was to tell them that. Highly recommend this meal for ANY hike. You will feel so full but not uncomfortable full.

  • Very tasty
I thought this tasted really good. Per the directions, I poured BOILING water into the pouch, stirred and let it sit for 5 minutes. Then stirred again and let it sit for more than 5 minutes. After all that time it's still piping hot and delicious with nice creamy texture. Surprising. The science on this stuff has gotten really good. I would say good for camping/hiking as long as you have a way to boil potable water. But I bought these to have on hand at the house for regular meals. ... show more

  • Go-to for multi day kayak trips!
I have tried several different brands of dehydrated meals because I go on multi day hiking/kayaking trips through out the year and need something filling, light weight and easy to cook. By far Mountain house wins in taste/convenience. Chicken and Dumplings is my favorite dinner! (Just add water) The quality of ingredients and the lack of additives/preservatives makes this my favorite brand. The dumplings are a little doughy but I can't even get mad at that because that happens when I cook them from scratch as well! My only complaint and the only reason I can not give them a 5 star review is because the cost. Yes it is 2 servings, but when you physically exert yourself in hiking or kayaking you need 2 servings worth of calories. If I don't catch these on sale, I will not buy. Only other minor inconvenience is in order to pack them flat you have to open them/break the seal and shift around the food. Although not a deal breaker, it just sucks if they reopen on the trip, because you could lose a whole meal (I did not deduct any stars for this) ... show more

  • Pretty good
Chicken and dumplings was pretty good could use a little bit more water or a little bit more steeping time for rehydration but all around good meal

  • Great taste!
Chicken and dumplings is one of my favorite meals. This rehydrated fairly well - extra time and stirring helps. Highly recommended!

  • So comforting on a chill night solo camping
I've recently gotten into 4runner camping here in Florida, and was looking for some good quality quick meal options that I could pack. I had never tried this brand before and wasn't expecting too much from an add water option. I was pleasantly surprised when I boiled water and added to this, ten minutes later it was ready to go. Gave me time to set up and it was more than enough for me but could easily be shared with another person. I can't wait to try the others but will wait til they maybe go on sale and stock up 😃 highly recommend ... show more

  • Expensive but long shelf life for preppers and light weight for backpackers
I haven't had freeze dried food since my backpacking days in another life back in the 70s so I got this to see how it tastes now. Back then I seem to remember freeze dried foods being packaged in plastic bags that didn't really keep them fresh. This meal is packed in a heavy aluminum foil envelope with an internal zipper to use while rehydrating it and is packaged with a sachet of some kind of oxygen absorber. My absorber sachet was very solid indicating it had absorbed as much oxygen as it could. There was no indication of loss if integrity of the foil envelope. The meal tasted fresh. I bought it at the end of 2023, it appears to have been packaged in 2023, and had a best by date of June 2053. All of the ingredients maintained their individual flavors and the meal tasted good. The envelope contained two servings and I ate them both as I would have when solo backpacking. There was a bit more bulk there than I needed but a single serving probably would not have been enough, and all I had done was lay around all day reading. I remember in my canoeing life making a month long wilderness trip where we were all hungry every day, and we had been paddling every weekend leading up to the trip, eating the meals we were taking with us. But it is easy to ignore being a little hungry Saturday night when you know you will have access to all of the food you could want when you get home Sunday night. If I were backpacking I don't think one serving of the meal would be enough for me. And I am not a big eater. Preparation is so easy when you read about it on the package but it is different when you try to do it. I boiled more water than I needed and used a for real 1/3 cup measuring cup to scoop it out of the pot. But I could only scoop up about half a 1/3 cup at a time. By the time I had the required 1-1/3 cup of water in there most of it had already been absorbed and there was very little left to wet the part of the meal in the corners of the envelope. Stirring in the envelope with the usual camping soup spoon is not easy. So when I got to eating the meal I found there were portions of it that were not adequately hydrated and these were generally surrounding chunks of meat. Eating the entire meal I got 33% of my allowed cholesterol and 74% of my allowed salt, both of which I am supposed to avoid, and 72% of my recommended protein. There isn't much on the ingredients list that you can't pronounce or takes up an entire line. This is not a cheap way to eat, but if you have to carry your food on your back all day it seems like a necessary evil. But if you are a through hiker what do you do with all of the empty envelopes. Full or empty those envelopes will take up a lot of space in a backpack. And you have to carry adequate water to hydrate yourself and all your meals until you get to the next water source. ... show more
