  • A Cozy Campfire Meal
I recently took the Mountain House Chicken & Dumplings on a camping trip, and it was just what I needed after a long day of hiking. The weather was chilly, and having a warm, comforting meal made all the difference. Preparing it was a breeze—just add boiling water, wait a few minutes, and voilà! The chicken was tender, and the dumplings were fluffy and soaked up the savory sauce perfectly. The flavors were hearty and satisfying, making it feel like a home-cooked meal in the great outdoors. After a long day of exploring, sitting by the campfire with a bowl of this Chicken & Dumplings was the perfect way to unwind. It definitely exceeded my expectations for freeze-dried food and is now a staple in my camping gear! ... show more

  • Hurricane Prep Essential
I live in south Florida and unfortunately can't evacuate during Hurricanes. My career makes me stay as a essential worker for recovery. I have worked Irma, Elsa and the last beast, Ian. I didn't have power for 11 days and lived out of my work truck for days at a time. These have always been apart of my "survival kit" as all I need is hot water. (Sometimes I get that by leaving a metal can of water under the hood of my truck to heat it up) These meals are delicious. I highly recommend them for anyone backpacking, or needing survival food. They last forever in your closet and they are insanely easy to ready up. Pour in hot water. Stir. Leave it sit for a few minutes and you're good to go. I've tried them all. They are a little pricey sure. They have a lot of salt in them, yup, but when you're sweating 20 hours a day in the Florida humidity, you need it. These are about the only thing I look forward to during a Hurricane. (...ok Maybe some Hazard Pay as well) ... show more

Great flavor to every Mountain House meal I've had over the years. They really do retain their flavor and quality for a very long time. Perfect hiking fuel.

  • Expensive.
Everything is great except the price. Easy instructions, turns out well, tastes good. One word of advice if you purchase this for survival food, make sure that you have water too.

  • This in probably my favorite Mountain House.
It is supposed to be chicken and dumplings, but it reminds me more of Chiken Pot Pie. I say this becuase the dumplings always seem to be more like crust on a pot pie than dumplings. Great mix of xhiken and veggies and the gravy is spot on.

  • Comfort that weights almost nothing
Hands down one of the best Mountain House meals. The flavor is incredible and texture is also on point. Sometimes if you don't mix it perfectly some of the dumpling pieces stay a bit crunchy which actually is a feature not a bug in my opinion. If you like chicken and dumplings as a comfort meal, and you are familiar with backpacking meals (as in how you adjust your expectations because OBVI it's not going to be 100% exactly like a fresh meal), then order this asap. ... show more

  • Another Mountain House Favorite!
I love Mountain House meals, both for camping and even at home quick meals. Just tried the Chicken and Dumplings (at Home) and I will say it's now one of my fav's (next to Pad Thai)! Terrific texture and plenty of ingredients plus just a great overall taste. I will be buying more for me go-bag as well as for regular at-home quick meals. Highly Recommended! ... show more

  • Expensive but long shelf life for preppers and light weight for backpackers
I haven't had freeze dried food since my backpacking days in another life back in the 70s so I got this to see how it tastes now. Back then I seem to remember freeze dried foods being packaged in plastic bags that didn't really keep them fresh. This meal is packed in a heavy aluminum foil envelope with an internal zipper to use while rehydrating it and is packaged with a sachet of some kind of oxygen absorber. My absorber sachet was very solid indicating it had absorbed as much oxygen as it could. There was no indication of loss if integrity of the foil envelope. The meal tasted fresh. I bought it at the end of 2023, it appears to have been packaged in 2023, and had a best by date of June 2053. All of the ingredients maintained their individual flavors and the meal tasted good. The envelope contained two servings and I ate them both as I would have when solo backpacking. There was a bit more bulk there than I needed but a single serving probably would not have been enough, and all I had done was lay around all day reading. I remember in my canoeing life making a month long wilderness trip where we were all hungry every day, and we had been paddling every weekend leading up to the trip, eating the meals we were taking with us. But it is easy to ignore being a little hungry Saturday night when you know you will have access to all of the food you could want when you get home Sunday night. If I were backpacking I don't think one serving of the meal would be enough for me. And I am not a big eater. Preparation is so easy when you read about it on the package but it is different when you try to do it. I boiled more water than I needed and used a for real 1/3 cup measuring cup to scoop it out of the pot. But I could only scoop up about half a 1/3 cup at a time. By the time I had the required 1-1/3 cup of water in there most of it had already been absorbed and there was very little left to wet the part of the meal in the corners of the envelope. Stirring in the envelope with the usual camping soup spoon is not easy. So when I got to eating the meal I found there were portions of it that were not adequately hydrated and these were generally surrounding chunks of meat. Eating the entire meal I got 33% of my allowed cholesterol and 74% of my allowed salt, both of which I am supposed to avoid, and 72% of my recommended protein. There isn't much on the ingredients list that you can't pronounce or takes up an entire line. This is not a cheap way to eat, but if you have to carry your food on your back all day it seems like a necessary evil. But if you are a through hiker what do you do with all of the empty envelopes. Full or empty those envelopes will take up a lot of space in a backpack. And you have to carry adequate water to hydrate yourself and all your meals until you get to the next water source. ... show more
