Banana plugs make speaker installation a breeze. They are designed for use with amplifiers or speakers that use traditional binding posts. Not only is it easier to make the connection on the back of your amp, it is safer, with no chance of stray wire strands creating a short across contacts. These high quality plugs are the closed screw type and can accept bare wire or spades. They are sized to fit speaker wire from 12 to 18 AWG. Each pair comes with one plug color coded red and the other coded black, for easy polarity identification. The plug body is made of brass, which is then plated with gold to help prevent corrosion and ensure smooth connections. • Monoprice Banana Plugs - Closed Screw - Great for Price
Size: 5 Pairs Pattern Name: Banana Plugs
These Monoprice Banana Plugs (Closed-Screw, Gold-Plated) are fairly nice banana plugs for the price. Look great: Fully gold-plated, thinner than others (but longer). Not every binding post is exactly the same, so they may fit better with some, or not at all with some (rare). Not a great fit for my Micca MB42X speaker posts, but they do work fine (easy to pull out though). Fit my Micca OriGain amp posts great, oddly enough. Instructions: Strip wire about 3/4". Unscrew bottom piece of banana plug. Insert wire through bottom. End of wire will come out other end about 1/4". Spread and fan out wire over the end (it will be crimped tight when top of banana plug is screwed on). Important tip: Cut end of wire correct length, only need about 1/8 - 1/4", so that when bent over the plug bottom it does not fall on banana threads (makes screwing on very tough). Screw on the top of banana plug, tight. Make sure banana tip is also screwed on tight; yes, it also comes off, for no good reason (actually they seem to reuse body for pin-type plug). Done. Quicker than this makes it seem. More tips: Heat shrink tubing can be used over wire and much of banana plug, to make pretty but more importantly insulate plug and reduce chance of shorts (black and red tubing, or simply black with some red electrical tape to identify wires). Thread-locker can be used (just a tiny bit). Things like DeOxit Gold can be used to help protect and lubricate (preserve surfaces, smooth screw fastening). Also: See CableMatters banana plug page (product photos) for photo guides for a very similar design (photos attached). Or: See Mediabridge banana plug page guides for a similar design (their design seems to avoid threading issue). Or: Search the web for plenty of similar photo guides. ... show more

  • They get the job done..
Size: 5 Pairs Pattern Name: Banana Plugs
I avoided this review for quite a while, cause I honestly had nothing much to say about these, except they.. work! :\ But after living with them for a while, I learned a thing or two about them. They have, IMO, many unnecessarily moving parts, the front tip, the plug that goes into things, why does that need to be screw-able? It's the most annoying thing ever. It's not that bad, you can just screw it tight, but it's just more chance for the cables to get loose IMO. They were also a bit tricky to work with (considering this is my first time doing this, so I might just be a noob), I had a couple of cables come loose out of the plugs just from random things touching the cables (I have the sound cables around my PC cables, so they move quite a lot). And, I found out, you need to tuck in the cable deeeeep into the plug, the plastic covering of the cable basically needs to get stuck in the plug itself, otherwise there's nothing else to hold it. P.S.: See how the cables look after screwing them in. Also, see them in the speaker, they don't go any deeper, which annoys me a tiny bit, but.. whatever! :\ But anyhow, they got the job done, look neat, and tidy, I just can't give them anything but 5 stars! :) 1 ... show more

  • Good for small wire only.
Size: 5 Pairs Pattern Name: Banana Plugs
I had the Closed type ones and was using 14g wire. They were a nightmare for me to connect the wire to. Too much wire for the middle piece to slide over and then you couldn’t screw it all the way down. I did manage to get about half of them connected but don’t dare to tug on the wire. I’ve used Banana clips before but these ones were terrible. I usually like all their products but hate this one. ... show more

  • Lots of issues
Size: 5 Pairs Pattern Name: Banana Plugs
I was not a big fan of these. First, although they advertise that they fit 12AWG cable, it's not actually wide enough to fit the insulation of my cable, so I had to strip a really long piece of the insulation and just feed the bare wire into it. Also, the mechanism to lock it down seems pretty bad. You fold the bare cable over the top of the insert and then screw it in, but in the process of screwing it in it presses and spins the bare cable strands, so it doesn't make a good fit. I unscrewed one and the metal strands were torn to pieces inside it. They are also not very sturdy when plugged into my speakers. They don't make a tight fit at all and feel loose -- they are probably the most loose of all the banana connectors I've ever had. I also don't like that the plug is very long and not insulated at all. If you touch them together they will short. Since they are so loose in my speakers I'm worried that they will move enough to touch each other and short my amp. I really regret this purchase. In the past I've just bought pre-made cables. They weren't that expensive and they were solid and worked great. I wanted to make my own cables, but it ended up not saving me much money and they are far worse quality. I'd suggest just buying pre-made cables. ... show more

  • Good quality connectors (even better with a little clear shrink tubing...)
Size: 5 Pairs Pattern Name: Banana Plugs
Nice. Easy to assemble. If anyone is worried about "paperclips" or whatever conductors shorting out the connectors, remember that clear shrink tubing is your friend.

  • Poorly designed for 12GA wire, sketchy locking mechanism, cannot return
Size: 5 Pairs Pattern Name: Banana Plugs
I bought these a few weeks ago and just got around to installing them. Each plug is in three parts: A main barrel, an insert that surrounds the wire, and another piece that has small threads and the actual banana connection. I included a pic. The short version of why I dislike them: You're expected to feed the wire into the first part (the part in the picture with the red washer on it), then spread the strands of wire out, and subsequently thread that into the main barrel. With substantial wire (mine is 12G, this proves nearly impossible. If you do manage to do it, the wire binds up while assembling the connector, twisting and shredding strands of the conductor. If that's not enough, the end piece can easily unscrew, potentially creating further reliability issues with the connection. Nothing about these positively, tightly connects your components, and I can't comfortably say I'm performing a quality installation when I can't be sure of simple connections. Being unable to return them is what's really getting on my last nerve. I wasted $10 on something I can't use or return. Into the trash they go, you live and learn I suppose. ... show more
