This review is coming from someone who has riden bmx for over 20 years, and has worked in or been a part of the bmx industry for over a 15 years now. So I know a a few things when it comes to high end, low end and everything in between. With that out of that way, let me say this, the L100 has a lot of good going for it. If managing to catch it for under $400 you can't go wrong. The full 4130 chromoly frame fork and bars is a huge step in the right direction and an excellent starting foundation if wanting to upgrade the bike in the future. The sealed rear wheel, mid bottom bracket, and internal headset are also nice, but I'll touch on those in a bit. The frame accommodates wide tires, I've pictured a 2.4" eclat fireball in the rear. The forks also have ample space for large tires as well. Stock pivotal seat is pretty comfy. Brakes feel pretty solid for stock brakes. Now, where the bike does fall short. The front wheel, it's unsealed. At the original asking price, there are other bike companies out there in this price range offering better specs. So I would have liked to see a sealed hub here. Now, the rims on these bikes are pinned instead of welded. While not a huge deal when you take in to account who this bike is marketed to, it's still something to make note of. The sprocket suffers from the "mass produced quickly" so it was rather bent causing some tight spots. Usually this is something you can't avoid on complete bikes like this. Stock chain is dainty, so I upgraded to a shadow v2 half link. There was grease on the clamp area of the stem where the bars go. I've never in my life greased that area, and I definitely recommend anyone gets one to check it before slapping the bars on. All in all, I purchased this for my wife to pedal around with me at skateparks so I wasn't expecting to be wowed. However I wasn't let down by the quality. Mongoose may be known as a department store brand, but they do have quite the bmx heritage. I think if you can score this bike on a deep discount, or sale and swap out the wheels, chain, perhaps stem and cranks at some point. You'll have a solid bike. Straight out of the bike, it's great for beginnera and intermediate or that old guy getting back in to it after years off the bike. Also, one thing to note, some of reviews are of people who bought a bmx bike and don't really understand what they bought. So for those reviews noting the chain guard or a kick stand. This isn't meant for a kickstand. And the chain guard is there because it has to be, you really aren't expected to keep it on the bike. ... show more

mongoose l80: first off Mongoose in some people's eyes are trash, but like like many brands carry a wide range of bikes (types, sizes and quality) yes they do have the low end bottom barrel walgoose models, then models like the fraction and legion series. Just know what you want and what your buying. The legion series is GREAT, designed for beginner to advanced BMX riders, yes it can be used as a commuter bike but may not be the most comfortable as in the fixed seat models are designed for trick and stunt riding, in my opinion from the l10 to the l40 (specifically) should come with adjustable height and angle seat as this is typically for a younger beginner rider, the l60 and above are for the more experienced to advanced riders. The l80 has been perfect for learning manuals, hops, fakies 180"s and crankflips for a 13 yr old 5'5. own the l60, l80, and l100 all are beautiful and completely changed my perspective on the Mongoose BMX, yes a part may beak (should not arrive broke) but part of BMX is upgrading your bike and making it better and stronger!! Definitely recommend the legion series based on rider height age and experience. ... show more

Pros: best config you can get at this price range. Chromoly frame, fork and handlebar, sealed bearing for front and rear hub, freecoaster rear hub. (other brand like WTP, fly kink may cost you double for this config). Easy to assembly (just install the handlebar, padel, front wheel and seat). It come with a U brake and is suitable to install Gyro, but I took off the brake cos I run brakeless at park. Cons: Made in China by pacific bicycle, and 21 inch frame (suitable for 5'11 or above I guess). ... show more

I ride a lot of BMX (own 3 BMX bikes) so I know a little bit, and the bike I got is dangerous and wouldn't trust it. For starters, one of the front dropouts was bent so it was not aligned with the other dropout. But the bigger issue for me was the steering tube was rattling around inside the head tube despite being tight. After I saw that I was like NOPE- that's going back. These were noticed before I even unpacked or assembled the bike so there may even be more problems I didn't catch since I never even put it together. I wasn't expecting perfection with this being a Mongoose, but I feel the bike should at least be safe to operate. Maybe I got a bad one out of the batch. Just please if you buy this bike, please inspect it thoroughly. Side note, this was bought as used/ good condition, and was missing the pedals, the seat, and seat tube. Great bike!! I was so concerned with all of the less than great reviews (regarding used parts, missing parts, damaged areas, etc...)... The bike shipped to me was wrapped very well for long term storage, and shipping as well... Easy to put together (if you know even a little about how to do so), and has detailed instruction manual as well - for great reference and usage information... This bike (Legion L500 Teal/purple-blue) is a great bike with a very appealing color scheme as well... Bought this for my daughter's 10th birthday, and I don't think she will need another BMX style bike for a few years to come!! The rear brakes are useless, and the hole in the front fork was too high to get any brakes to fit and spin the bars. So it takes some work and know-how, and more parts, to get it dialed-in. But it's solid enough, and for Cr-Mo and free shipping all the way to Hawaii you cannot beat the price.
