  • Absolutely Yellows your Project
Style: Satin Size: 1/2 Pint
Everything said this wouldn’t yellow or affect the color of the piece I was refinishing. The official instructions never mention use on paint, only over stains. So, my mistake (?) for using white chalk paint underneath of this; all my research into this product prior to use stated it would not affect the color by any way, and is used to top coat seal indoor furniture. Even reviews online by others said it could be used in this way for chalk paint. Upon use it went on milky white (as expected) and dried with a yellow haze in streaks. This project was a long, time intensive process with multiple stages to refinish an antique. Using this minwax was the FINAL step and I was so disappointed to see the results. It looks like it lived in a smoker’s house for the past 40 years. I could never recommend this product if you’re trying to keep true colors underneath it; maybe for using over the top of stained wood, but never painted. I’m holding onto the product to test on stained pieces; but this much yellowing? I can’t imagine it would hold true stain colors either. ... show more

  • BEWARE OF SIZE - BABY SIZED.
Style: Gloss Size: 1/2 Pint
I hope this helps just 1 person... READ THE OUNCES BEFORE YOU BUY. And if you're like me, and even if you read that and still can't comprehend the size of it- see my image attached. I'm an idiot. Lol . I actually gasped at how TINY the can was when I opened the box ... was expecting much bigger. My bad though for not reading the details. I'm hoping a little goes a long way though *fingers crossed* ... show more

  • Good topcoat
Style: Semi-Gloss Size: Quart
Used this to put a top coat on my newly painted kitchen cabinets. I used a standard paint brush to apply a thing coat over freshly painted cabinets. Two coats and my cabinets look brand new Warning: make sure you apply a thin coat, and use a foam brush to clean up any buildup. If you put on heavy or leave excess in any nooks, it will dry yellow ... show more

  • ... top coat for my acrylic paintings and it works great. It doesn't have a strong bad odor
Style: Gloss Size: 1/2 Pint
I use this as a gloss top coat for my acrylic paintings and it works great. It doesn't have a strong bad odor, in my opinion and is very easy to apply and dries quickly. If you need a glossy top coat for acrylic paintings this is it.

  • Best Sealer to Protect Your Project!
Style: Matte Size: 1/2 Pint
I am an avid chalk painter. I have done so many pieces, and although I love the look of a waxed finish, for pieces that are used often, wax is not really realistic. It will not hold up to watermarks, or just daily use. it is just not practical. . . but this will! I just recently purchased a new home, and it was a full gut job. I wanted my home to be different, as I wanted wood counters and a wood island. I didn't want stained wood counters, I wanted chalk painted white wood plank kitchen counters and a stained wood island. Kitchen counters obviously are going to be used and due to the fact they're white, I knew I had to protect them. I didn't want a kitchen I was afraid to use. Everyone thought I was crazy with my white wood counters, but I didn't care what they thought and I didn't listen. My contractor put the wood together for me, I painted them and then I poly'd them like a madwoman. When I poly, I use a round head brush. I probably did 6 coats per countertop. I did not sand in between each coat, but every other coat. For my island, I chose the satin minwax, and I used a lot more poly due to it being stained. When you use stain, it seeps into the wood. When you paint it is layered so it coats the wood. Anytime you use stain, you're going to require more sealer. I probably did 12 coats on the island. I wanted to make sure it was protected. We cook, water spills, spaghetti sauce, and grease splatters and it all just wipes up with a towel or a sponge. I prefer the water-based minwax because it gives off little to no odor. The most important thing to remember is, you do not want it to bubble so do NOT shake this. I always stir with a plastic disposable spoon and put on nice thin layers. Not too thin, but not too thick either. You will notice a milky white color as you're laying the poly on, but this will dry clear. The Matte or satin is my favorite, but it honestly depends on the project. Due to the fact they're kitchen counters, I will most likely repeat after a year, just put a few more coats to make sure they hold up. I have used many poly and sealers, but Minwax is by far the best and most durable! ... show more

  • A great protective topcoat for DIY projects
Style: Semi-Gloss Size: 1/2 Pint
SUCCESS!! I used 3 coats of Minwax Polycrylic Semi-gloss on a $7 pine craft box, stained with Saman water-based wood stain in Cognac, and it turned out beautifully. The cheap box turned into a work of art, and the Minwax + Saman stain combo really did most of the heavy lifting for me, by highlighting pretty wood grain, and creating a lit-from-within glow. Perhaps it was the extra sanding I did with 400 grit paper between coats of Minwax, but the semi-gloss actually because quite glossy after the 3rd coat. I didn't mind---it looks quite natural to me. I packed the finished piece in my checked luggage over Xmas, and the Minwax provided enough of a tough coat that the box survived the journey without a scratch. The best attribute is the self-leveling. You don't need to worry about brush strokes as long as you are using a relatively decent brush. I laid down thin sweeps of Minwax, and it dried without any streaks or blemishes in about an hour or so. I was able to re-coat in 1-2 hours without any problems. I didn't time it or anything....just went by feel , and it turned out fine. It dries hard and not the least bit sticky or tacky. I'm excited to try the Gloss version next--this stuff is totally foolproof, and I have a ton of arts and crafts projects in mind! ... show more
