I've literally been searching for this type of device for years. The first one to catch my eye was the GPD Win handheld mini PC. I've followed GPD for years now as they've grown from a niche Android portable gaming company to where they are today—producing top-of-the-line PCs that fit in the palm of your hand. The reason I never went for a GPD device is quite simply the cost. Their portables, while impressive, start at around $600 on the low end, which is way above my budget. Other handheld PCs in the $300-400 range (my budget) tend to have very weak processors, which I don't think I could tolerate. (I still have nightmares about the old Acer netbooks from the early 2010s) Luckily, I was able to find the Koosmile P8 N100 Mini Laptop on sale for around $390, and I'm beyond happy with it. Background For a bit of my background, I've been building computers since I was 12. I run a home media/cloud server for my family, and I've worked in IT in varying capacities for years. I've designed and prototyped several of my own portables, so I have a clear understanding of what makes a good mini PC. Key Features and Performance The Koosmile P8 N100 Mini Laptop is fantastic. It has Gb ethernet, HDMI, Thunderbolt, and USB 3.0 connectors, providing excellent connectivity options. The capacitive screen flips into tablet mode if needed, adding versatility to its use. The N100 processor and SSD are surprisingly fast, with negligible boot times and a snappy, responsive feel. You can expect 5-6 hours of battery life with normal usage, which is quite decent for a device this size. Connectivity and Hardware The WiFi 6 and Bluetooth work well, and I was fairly surprised by the hardware quality. It has a full BIOS/UEFI interface and bootloader, which is not always common in mini PCs. I was able to install several different Linux distros, but the only one that worked reliably was Ubuntu Server. I attempted to install a desktop environment, but there were too many driver issues for it to function properly. The biggest obstacle to using this PC with an OS other than Windows 11 is definitely the display driver. Operating System and Drivers I managed to get Windows 10 LTSC 2019 running, but some of the drivers are still sub-par. For instance, the accelerometer driver works but won't rotate the display back to normal landscape mode for some reason. The WiFi/Bluetooth drivers work in Windows 10, but you need to download and install them manually, which could be problematic without LAN access. Fortunately, the GbE port works great, making it one of my favorite features since I primarily use this device for field IT work. Getting the P8 running well on other operating systems is one of my priorities so I'm working on putting together a driver package for Windows 10. If I end up finishing it, I'll make sure to post it here along with the hardware manifest for everything not included in the Windows 10 Kernel drivers. If I can find the source code, I'll make sure to do the same for Debian Linux. Usability in IT Work If you work in IT, you'll know that server closets rarely have enough flat surfaces for a full-sized laptop. You often end up holding the laptop with one hand or placing it on the ground. The Koosmile P8 is small enough that you can always find a place to set it down. Even if there's nowhere to put it, it's a handheld PC! Tablet mode works very well, and the included stylus was a key selling point for me. I often draw diagrams and mind maps while taking notes, and the stylus is perfect for that. The included stylus uses the Microsoft Pen Protocol, which was lucky for me because I have two other compatible styluses. Stylus and Drawing The included stylus is decent, especially considering it wasn't an add-on accessory but was simply included with the device. If you want to purchase a different stylus, I recommend the "Wacom Bamboo Ink Smart Stylus for Windows Ink Second Generation CS323AG0A," which can switch between Wacom Active ES Protocol and Microsoft Pen Protocol by holding both buttons down. This feature is especially useful for me because all my other devices with an active stylus use one of these two protocols, so I was able to integrate the P8 into my tech ecosystem immediately. Gaming and Streaming Some people might be interested in using this device for gaming. While I don't have much time for gaming anymore, I tested it with Factorio and Skyrim (the only games I play nowadays), and they both ran fine. The 720p display probably helps performance a bit, but you should still be able to play most strategy games and many FPS/RPG games from the PS3/Xbox 360 era, which is pretty good for an 8" 2-in-1 mini laptop. Streaming shouldn't be a problem over LAN if you have a decent gaming rig. Conclusion In conclusion, the Koosmile P8 N100 Mini Laptop offers an impressive balance of performance, portability, and affordability. Update (one month): I was able to export the entire driver package from Windows 11 and it's now running Windows 10 LTSC with all hardware working. Additionally, I can confirm that the M.2 slot is NVMe but only supports size 2242 drives. The factory drive appears to be SATA so there is some definite upgrade potential if you want even faster performance!     • Little Warrior with strong punch!

**UPDATE** 22-7-2024: KEYBOARD letter "O" malfunction. From day 1 I noticed an extreme sensitivity of the letter. One slight touch added 5 additional O's (ooooo). I thought I could manage, but after nearly 25 days, it began to interfere with my work. I reached out to Amazon and was impressed with the level of support I was provided. Initially we reinstalled the keyboard driver, but unfortunately, I had to go with a replacement. Luckily, these days almost every thing I do is backed up to a cloud and so I won't have to reinstall much. This KOOSMILE 8 inch HD Touch Screen Mini Laptop Computer with Windows 11 Pro worked fine for the first ten days until Microsoft Windows Pro11 demanded that we update and expand the KOOSMILE's Widows 11 Pro Security Software. Shortly thereafter, the HDMI attached Amazon Fire TV Monitor, which has worked perfectly for MANY MONTHS, rotated the monitor's screen representation by 90 degrees as shown in the attached photo. We've been unable to find instructions to reverse this 90 degree rotation and return the monitor screen to its correct upright representation. The older, 11 inch Windows 10Pro Asus laptop the KOOSMILE replaces continues to work perfectly with the same inputs and connections. ALL the evidence points to the corrupt Windows 11Pro Security Update we applied at the software's direction earlier today. Please tell us how to fix this unwanted, disturbing 90 degree monitor rotation asap or we'll return the laptop. ... show more
