  • Fantastic CR-10 upgrade
I ordered this upgrade for my CR-10 after I had some sort of failure of the factory extrusion head that caused my heating block, heat sink, and fans to become a giant, fist sized ball of plastic. I had been wanting to go to direct drive for a while, based on experience with some other printers with it, and this failure was the push I needed to order the Micro-Swiss kit. The Micro-Swiss kit is exceptionally well made, the base bracket is machined aluminum, and it all fit together very easily following the video that is linked from their website. They include a small business card with a QR code that takes you to the video, which is nice. I did have one small issue, the countersink for the shoulder screw for the lever arm wasn’t quite deep enough, and as a result, the screw would pinch the lever arm tight against the base bracket when tightened down, rather than the lever arm floating on the screw shoulder. I fixed that with some very light filing of the back side of the lever arm pivot boss to effectively make it thinner, it took only a few passes of a fine tooth file to get it to fit as intended, so, I consider this within the regular fit and finish of installing something like this, but could be fixed at the factory by cutting the screw countersink jsut a hair deeper. I calibrated the steps on my CR-10 following a few videos off YouTube, and I settled on 139.25 steps per mm as optimal. One other thing that must be done is offsetting the X and Y home, as the true, limit switch driven home now hangs off the build plate a bit. I am getting beautiful extrusion with this direct drive kit; the dual mesh drive rollers really bite hard into the filament, and the heat brake works amazing. You can heat the head up, unload the filament drive lever, and pull the filament back out of the hot end no problem, and the end that comes out looks like it’s been clipped by a pair of scissors! No swelling of the end in the brake like some hot ends, no stringy tail, just a clean square end. The first time I pulled the filament back when doing the step calibration I thought it broke off in the extruder, but, 3 more tails exactly the same has me convinced The heat brake just works that good! I’m running a .8mm nozzle in my CR-10 at 70mm/s speed and this extruder kit has absolutely no issue keeping up! ... show more

  • Nozzle doesn't seem to work well with petg compared to others
I installed this on my Creality Ender 3 v2. Installation was straight forward and well documented with photos. You have to download a PDF from the micro swiss site, as no paper instructions are included, but this wasn't an issue for me. It would have been nice if some of the hardware was included in the kit (bolts etc), but you can reuse some from your stock Creality hot end to get the job done. Unfortunately, this kit is not compatible with the ender 3 v2 fan assembly without printing a fan shroud. Not a huge deal, but still something I wish I had noticed prior to buying this kit. I don't know what they are thinking recommending the fan shroud to be printed in PLA, as mine (printed in petg) is getting decently hot. Maybe if you are only using the hot end to print low temperature materials, this would be fine. The extruder and the hot end are working really well. The direct drive gears fit perfectly, pulling the filament smoothly during printing and retractions. The hot end seems to be performing well without any appreciable heat creep towards the extruder (at least in the ~20 hrs of printing I've done @245C). I did have to raise my printing temperature to get the same results using this all metal hot end, but that is something that is suggested in the instructions. The major issue I have with this is that the stainless steel nozzle that this comes with seems to stick really badly to petg compared to other nozzles I have used. Petg tends to be a pain as far as globbing up on nozzles of certain material, so I guess that's okay. I just wish it had come with maybe a spare nozzle of a different material at this price point. Some of the machined parts had a few deep scratches and gouges in them, which isn't pretty, but I don't think it will affect the performance of this assembly. I might end up getting a different hot end and extruder setup for my next printer, as there are a decent number of quality options around this price point. The ease of installation is definitely what made me decide to buy this, as it's nearly a drop in replacement for the printers it's compatible with. Overall, I do not regret this purchase at all, but I do think there is room for improvement in the parts included. ... show more

  • One of the best hot ends out there
As Micro-Swiss is based in the USA, this is a high quality product. I have used other direct drives, and they do not match this one. I found an issue, after an "X" amount of prints with PLA... running 200/60, I have had a few failed prints, due to the grub screw coming loose after a while, causing a heat block... and the print fails. I have reached out to Micro-Swiss for a solution today... (I don't expect to hear back until after Thanksgiving) to see what type of revision/solution they offer. I would STILL recommend this direct drive, and hot end, over any other! (Just keep an eye on that grub screw.) **** UPDATE **** Changed from a 4, to 5 star due to the fact when I contacted Swiss, and explained the problem, they corrected it by providing the replacement part. The hot end is still running strong, and I am still a true supporter of them. ... show more

  • Great upgrade
Works amazing, dramatically improved my prints over my stock ender 3 hotend Wire routing is a bit annoying, ended up running mine under the extruder motor and out the back. I think the microswiss Ng would make this easier. The issue is the extruder motor and wiring get in the way for either the side structure or the top structure. ... show more

  • Working well with PETG
I bought this for higher temp plastic. It works well and has yet to clog. I'm not seeing any improvement in print quality over the original or another direct-drive kit. I am happy to not have clogs with the higher temp plastic (PETG v. PLA).
