  • The best console version available for these games
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5
Konami has continually updated this collection of Metal Gear Solid games over the last year that it has been available. It was released in a disappointing state, the biggest offender was the Nintendo Switch version which I would have bought instead but all 3 games are limited to 30fps which is hard to accept when the PS2 and PS3 both ran these titles (MGS2 + MGS3) at 50-60fps. The reason why is they used Unity engine as a shell that houses the emulators running these games and the Nintendo Switch just doesn’t have the single threaded performance to run the games at 60fps. If these were native ports, it would have worked. This is why I opted for the PS5 version instead and only the first game runs at 30fps and this is because of the game’s tick rate being tied to the frame rate. The game would speed up like you were watching it at 2x speed. But MGS 2 and 2 run at a locked 60fps. If you grew up playing these masterpieces like I did, you know how influential and impressive they were back in the early 2000s. Hideo Kojima really is one of the most brilliant game developers and directors in the industry. Konami are really not smart from a business perspective to have parted ways with him. It’s sad because I would like for there to be more games in this franchise and I really don’t see how it would be possible without him. They tried it a few years ago with Metal Gear Survive and it was a critical and financial disappointment, this is because it was a multiplayer game with micro transactions and didn’t have a decent story. This collection is now to the point of being superior to the Bluepoint HD collection (of which The Master Collection is based on), thanks to numerous bugs and glitches that were never fixed in the 2013 release that Konami has repaired and improved over the last year. We will soon get update version 2.0 which brings some more big changes. The PC/Steam version of MGSMC has already received the patch in September and it’s been confirmed that PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch will all get it in the near future. Whenever it arrives, I will update my review because I want to list all of the changes as this update will be the biggest one thus far. Update- version 2.0 did drop for Xbox and PlayStation and we now get native 4k versions of MGS 2 and 3 at 60fps. Switch is of course left behind as it seems to lack the required performance necessary to run these games at 60fps (at least because of the way the ported these games using emulation inside of a Unity Engine container). The Switch could technically do it, as it’s similar in performance to Xbox 360 and PS3 but it must not be worth it for the devs to give us the option. At least 2 out of the 3 platforms are now in a respectable state. ... show more

  • Slightly under-delivered but still a great collection!!
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5
I've been an MGS fan since forever so when Konami announced the master collection pack back in the Summer allowing us fans to play them on the modern consoles I was already super giggity. First of all the game runs great!! MGS2 and 3 are straight port of the PS3 remastered edition so they both run at butter smooth 60 frame per second. I've dump hours into it so far and no weird glitches or anything like that so far. I haven't checked yet but I'm pretty sure they stay at 1080P at least for the PS5 version. For MGS1 and the older MG entries...well none of the them have full scene support but they are already super old so I will give them a pass plus I have a HDTV that can force full widescreen anyway. Outside of some minor hiccups this collection is chuck full of contents!! I remembered playing the first game on the PC as a kid (they called that version MGS: Integral) and I was surprised that the PC version was included. IIRC Integral is basically the main game and the VR Missions expansion combined and you can pick Very Easy Mode where the game will provide you with an infinite ammo MP5 so you don't struggle as much. The only catch is that you do have to download a bunch of "language packs" that take about 2-5GB of space each before you can access to these outside-US region versions of the game. The collection had also included the original MG, MG2, Snake's Revenge (A bastard sequel that Kojima have nothing to do with) and most of the digital novels that are done by Ashley Woods although just like the "language packs" you have to download them before you can access it. IIRC a blu ray disc have like 50GB so I find it rather lazy that they have to make us download a bunch of data to make everything fully playable. In conclusion while it did slightly under-delivered and make you download a bunch of data before you can access everything it is a great collection chuck full of contents and a must have for every MGS fans!! ... show more

  • The Best way to currently play MGS Games
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5
I'm a huge fan of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 and I can tell you that this is currently the best way to play and own them for a modern platform. I've played through MGS 1-3 as a part of this and I can say that they've done a fantastic job adapting the original releases with a few graphical and functional upgrades. You're not getting 'remakes' here, as much as remasters (ie upscaling, modernized control and save options, etc) Some things, however, can't be translated. You're not going to get Psycho Mantis in MGS1 'reading your mind' (ie Memory card) and talking about other games you've played. That's only possible if you're playing the original release on a PS1. ... show more
