  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Only thing my cat will eat besides shrimp!
Style: Pate Color: Chicken Size: 3 Ounce (Pack of 24)
The media could not be loaded. The ingredients of this food satisfy my requirements and my cat eats it. That is the miracle. The price is good compared to local stores but in general it is cheaper to feed my cat human food with cat supplements than to use cat food. I have been giving my girl shrimps or a chicken tender for dinner along with the cat food and she is doing fine. In fact, a previous cat who was dying of kidney failure got better!!! and lived 3 years longer than expected on shrimp, liver, chicken, steak, cantaloupe,& yogurt. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality. But...
Style: Pate Color: Kitten Dinner Size: 5.5 Ounce (Pack of 24)
We switched to this brand about a year ago when the brand we had been using for the entirety of our pets lives, Whole Earth Farms, was discontinued. Our cats and dogs have always been indoor and outdoor pets and during the time we used Whole Earth Farms fleas and ticks were a non-issue. But when we switched to another brand it was crazy. We fed them one other, very expensive brand before going with Merrick and Merrick helped with the fleas but they are still an issue. I found out that the company that makes Merrick also made Whole Earth Farms so I don't know why they stopped making it. But I saw somewhere that it may be coming back. If so we will likely be switching back. Otherwise, this is a good brand and I would continue using Merrick. Also, we only do wet food if one of ourpets need it for some reason. Otherwise they eat the dry food. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Crazy Cat Lady recommends Merrick...
Style: Minced Style Color: Grammy's Pot Pie Size: 5.5 Ounce (Pack of 24)
If you are trying to find a good quality pet food and have been scared away from premium brands due to cost like most pet owners seem to be; I'd urge you to do the math on price per ounce before making that decision to feed Fluffy Meow Mix. I have two cats, a 15 year old and a 6 year old. They've typically been fed the mid-higher quality diets and are wonderfully, healthy indoor cats luckily. After I lost my job though, I was scrambling trying to find a cheaper alternative. While at first, it may seem like the 24 pack of Meow Mix at 16 dollars is a better deal than a 24 pack of Merricks for 35-40 dollars - you have to see what you are paying per ounce. The Meow Mix was 2.75 ounce each, or 66 ounces total. The same case of Merricks is 132 ounces. Ah ha! Now, which is the better deal? Not only is this people quality food with less filler, none of the nasty meat-by-products and preservatives like you find in lower priced pet food; it is the better bargain. My cats eat less of this food than they do the lower priced brands (ie, Fancy Feast, Meow Mix, etc) They tend to eat the entire portion of Merrick's and would sometimes leave part of the other food in their dish, so you waste less in that manner as well. The food seems very digestible to both my furry critters. One would occasionally yark if he ate too fast or something and that has really cut down after getting them on the Merrick diet. Their coats are healthier, the litter box even stinks less, so that tells me that the so-called bargain brands are not a deal at all. If you are thinking of maybe switching your pet to a better quality food - please do! It will keep your pet healthier in the long run and avoid vet visits so that is a huge savings also. Plus your animal will thank you for the better diet. I have also tried the Before Grain which is also made my Merrick's and both my cats loved the dry and wet versions. Yes, they are do seem to be more expensive at first, but I encourage you to do your own tests to find what works best for you, your pet and your budget. My felines seem to love this flavor the best of all the Merrick's offerings. New England boil - not so much though. Merrick's also offers a variety pack so you can let your felines taste sample and find what ones they like best. One other note to pass on, is the expiration date is printed on the bottom of each can. I've not had any issues with expired cans ordered from Amazon, but if you should choose to find this food at your local pet store, you may want to check those dates. I had one unfortunate encounter with an expired, rotten can which is not the fault of the pet food, merely a stocking issue that has since been corrected. I imagine it was due to the fact of it being a higher priced food, the stock just wasn't being used up enough so I got an old one. I never even knew there was an expiration date until then. Hope this information helps you in your purchases and you and your cat enjoy a long, healthy, lovely life! :-) ... show more

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars recent (summer 2015) formula change seems to be causing problems
Style: Morsels In Gravy Color: Cowboy Cookout Size: 5.5 Ounce (Pack of 24)
Edit July 14, 2015: I've stuck with this food through one formula change. However, the formula seems to have changed a second time with the most recent batch I received, and not in a good way. My cat who eats this is throwing up the undigested food pretty soon after eating at least once a day, which is something she never did before the most recent formula (and texture) change. I am going to be looking for a different wet food for her. Suggestions are welcome. Original review below: I have recently started switching my four cats over to wet food, and for two of them, Cowboy Cookout is the solution. I like that the Merrick foods (including this one) are primarily meat-based (there is a little pearled barley in this, but it's pretty far down on the ingredients list), and my vet says she thinks this is a high-quality food, as well, so that's reassuring. It's also reasonably-priced compared to some of the other premium brands, and if I forget to order in time, I can always pick it up at a local store -- it's available from several. One of my two cats currently on this food eats about 2/3 of a 5.5 oz. can in one day, approximately 1/3 in the morning and 1/3 in the evening. This works out to slightly more than 100 calories a day (the cat weighs about 9.5 pounds). So far, she is maintaining her weight appropriately on Cowboy Cookout. The moisture content also seems to stop any urinary tract problems with her -- and these have been an issue with this particular cat in the past. For what it's worth, this cat likes the food whether it's room temperature or cold, so I don't even have to warm up the contents of an open can after I take it out of the refrigerator -- she eats it all, regardless. The other of my cats currently on this food eats 1 5.5 oz. can a day, about 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 in the evening. This works out to 160 calories a day. He has a good energy level and his litterbox habits are fine, although he is losing weight. (Don't hold that against the food, though -- the fact that he was losing weight after the switch prompted a visit to a veterinary specialist and the diagnosis of an underlying condition that was responsible for the weight loss.) While most of the food is pretty soft, there are some processed cubes about 1/4 inch on a side, and this second cat doesn't care for the chunks. His refusal to eat them led to a diagnosis of major tooth problems, though, so again, don't blame the food. My solution thus far has been to puree Cowboy Cookout in a blender with water, and this second cat laps up the resulting "soup" as if it was the best-tasting thing in the world. Per one of the other reviews, many of my cans also came dented, but they weren't open or leaking and I fed the food to my cats anyway. That was awhile ago, and the cats are still with me. I think this is just one of those items that doesn't perform at 100% during the shipping process. Update 8/7/13: The texture of this food has changed significantly (along with the package redesign). It now has many more of the processed chunks and isn't suitable for cats with bad teeth. However, I had to change the food of the cat with tooth problems for unrelated reasons (inflammatory bowel disease diagnosis; he needs to avoid all beef and grains). The other cat is now eating the new formulation and is just as enthusiastic about it as she ever was (which is to say it's gone almost as soon as it hits the bowl). Update 10/18/13: I just now realized that the new formulation is grain free (i.e. no more barley). I still might not feed this to a cat with inflammatory bowel disease (as they are not supposed to eat beef) but I am pleased at the change in ingredients. ... show more
