    • Great deal and the perfect choice for overhead mounting, not for mounting to pipe
Boat-style (tubes) surface-mount rod holders start around $5 per holder in multi-packs and can run up well over $7.50 each if you want better brands, but in the end, they are all generally molded plastic tubes with a notch for the reel seat. Once you hit about $40 for a set of 4, you start seeing metals like aluminum and stainless. So, at current price of about $5 per rod (a little over $20), these are certainly on the low end of pricing. But, how's the quality? I am actually putting rods on the ceiling (rafters) of my garage for storage. Mounting these with the screws provided was super easy. I will say though that there were nylock nuts provided, but they did not match these screws at all and no matching bolts were provided. Not sure what they had in mind here, perhaps there were some matching bolts missing? Well, it wasn't important to me. Were I mounting on a boat, I'd be using stainless hardware anyhow, so... pffft. The notch for the reel seat was too small to allow my Senator 3/0's and other offshore reels to go down into the holder, but the bungee provided good, solid attachment, so no problem there. So, as plastic tube surface-mount rod holders go, these are a good deal and I'll actually buy some more, as solid attachment to the holder using the bungee is perfect for ceiling mounting and, if that is what you are after, I recommend them highly. If you are mounting on a boat against a flat surface like a center console, ditto, but again, get your own stainless hardware (see below). If you are mounting to poles like on a t-top or tower, these are not the best choice (see below). Some suggestions for improvements: 1. Stainless hardware to include for each holder: 1 screw, 1 bolt, 2 washers (1 for each side of mount to spread stress of mounting on fiberglass to avoid cracking), 1 regular nut, 1 nylock nut to finish (double bolts are essential in rough seas). A tiny tube of marine calk would be amazing. 2. Add an adapter for mounting to piping like rails and towers with slots going between each mount and the holder so that wire ties can be threaded through if desired for easy mounting. The adapter should continue the bolt holes so that the holder can also be bolted on. 3. Offer a version with a wider notch to better accommodate offshore reels. ... show more

Usually, these rod holders are just tubes. Sometimes with a section cut out to hold the reel in place from moving around. These are not only better looking, but provide for easier mounting because the screw/mounting holes are very accessible. My son mounted 2 of these on his e-bike to take his rods with him to go local fishing. The bungie is very useful to keep the rod and reel from bounding around or falling out. Just on the merits of the design, I give these a 5. But they also function very well. Will look great on any application be it your boat, car, cooler, bike or trailer. I recommend. ... show more

    • Very sturdy! Holds 9.5ft rod!
I've been having some difficulty attaching store bought rod holds onto my Colorado pontoon, as I have yet to find one that adequately secures my 9ft steelhead rod. These rod holders are absolutely fantastic for this! Fist the quality build is really sturdy. I feel like it could withstand one of those infomercials of a truck driving over it. The holder itself is also long enough to fit my large rod handle without beimg too top heavy. But I have to say that my favorite part is the elastic bungee that holds the rod secure in place. Usually I would have to come up with a crazy alternative to this on the spot, but they really did a nice job including everything that you would think about in a rod holder. Kudos!! ... show more

    • Perfect for storage
The Mecha-X Rod Holder were a good addition to my crate for my kayak to help store extra rods. They fit my spin reels fine, the rods feel secure enough for lake use. Not sure how they would handle rough waves in the great lakes or even ocean. The bungee cord ball thing is good in theory, but too difficult to do while on a kayak in the water. I like that these rod holders could be installed on a wall too, so they would be good for garage/basement storage solutions too. ... show more
