This is my new standard for stylish portable headphones. Hats off to Master & Dynamic, a brand that is relatively new to me, for getting so many things right on the MH40! While its sound quality alone is not worth the ~$400 at the time of this review, so many other aspects of this headphone come together in this rugged yet elegant that make this worth the hefty price tag. - SOUND - The sound quality of this headphone is superb, especially considering its size and lack of a requirement for an amp or DAC. However, it must be noted that this headphone is quite bass heavy! This was very jarring for me, and it rubbed me the wrong way at first. I thought that, perhaps, I had fallen for this headphones' looks and got myself a dressed-up pair of Beats! However, once I got used to the pronounced bass, I noticed that it does not quite overpower other aspects of the music (though I think it toes the line here; the bass is quite pronounced) and retains detail in the upper ranges. If you prefer a more balanced, clear sound, I would suggest something else (such as the BeoPlay H6, which is also a great looking headphone and at the same price range as the MH40). If you're a basshead, I think these headphones will hit the sweetspot of fullfilling your bass cravings while giving you everything else that is a part of a balanced tonal diet. - BUILD QUALITY - Wow, these headphones are built like a tank. Everything is made out of solid metal and leather. As a result, these are a little heavy for the size, but not uncomfortably so. Enough to give these a solid heft to make these headphones feel solid.These are my go-to portable headphones and I have know that these will serve me faithfully for years to come. - COMFORT - These headphones are so comfortable. The ear pads are stuffed with memory foam, so they feel like pillows for your ears. The headband is also padded and comfy (which we take for granted, but sometimes headbands can look cozy but actually put pressure on weird spots on your head... not so with these). - PORTABILITY - These headphones sound great from any source, and I did not notice any difference in sound quality when I used an AMP and DAC. The built in mute button is handy. The supplied removeable cable can be connected on either the right or left side, which is handy feature. The unused cable port can be used to plug in another pair of headphones to share music (a cute feature that I honestly don't use too much). Master & Dynamic really did a wonderful job making a really solid product. I really can't pick out anything they did wrong (unless you just don't like the bassy sound signature).     • Not the class leader, but a decent set of cans

The MH40 Wireless headphones are a decent set of cans from Master & Dynamic. First, the build quality is off the charts. Very nice. Everything is leather and aluminum. There's no plastic on these headphones. But that also increases the weight, and the headband padding is far too thin for heavy headphones. I got a hotspot atop my bald head almost immediately and a headache after about an hour. Another issue that could affect comfort is the shallow and tight ear cups. These are not roomy cans. Finally, the sound quality of these cans is mixed. There's lovely separation and imaging, with warm, but not overpowering bass. The treble also is warm and not fatiguing. But the mids are pretty veiled and a touch muddy. I also would recommend that you avoid the MW40 Wireless if you use an iPhone to stream music to your headphones because Master & Dynamic doesn't support the AAC Bluetooth codec that iPhones use. So, you're stuck with SBC, which is the most primitive and poor-sounding codec. This is inexplicable, especially since these cans support the Android codec aptX. ... show more

I researched a lot of headphones and these M&D MW40’s were the best for me in terms of functionality and especially the look and feel. These are nicely crafted and am happy with this purchase. I am using them with an iPhone which I’ve read won’t give me the best possible sound that these headphones offer, but after having used them these last week few weeks the sound is perfect. While these are not noise cancelling, the sound comes in very clear, crisp coupled with the perfect fit of the luxurious leather ear pieces over my ears. These two pluses are more than enough to remove the competition of most outside noises while listening to my music or podcasts. I’ve worn them for 2-4 hours at a time and they are very comfortable through the wear, not too tight or loose. Connection to my Apple devices is quick and easy. The only downside is the M&D app is not available in Apple’s app store so I am missing out on the sound tweaking features (e.g. bass, treble) the app allows one to do on these headphones. There may be another way to get the app on an Apple device but haven’t had time to research it. For now I’m still content with the delivered sound without the fine tune adjustments that can be made through the app. Hopefully this app issue gets resolved quickly because I know I’m missing out on additional sound capabilities with these headphones. ... show more

    • Incredible sound and unparalleled comfort
I have a slight obsession with finding the perfect headphones. I have tried countless earbuds, over the ears, noise cancelling, etc. just to find a pair that I loved. I think I have found that pair with these M&Ds. As soon as I opened the box I could tell these were luxurious and that feeling was confirmed when I put them on and felt absolute bliss. The ear cups were more comfortable than any I had worn before and blocked out a lot of sound from the outside without using an active noise cancellation technology. That ANC usually is very uncomfortable for me and is a sacrifice I have to make with other headphones in order to block out sound and listen to music at a comfortable, but that is not the case with these. The pairing with my phone was easy and once I got started I fell in love with the sound. The highs, mids, and lows all hit perfectly and every instrument was distinguishable. This sound quality is incredible and hard to beat and every genre sounds great (from classical to soul to hip-hop). I've worn them every day for over a week and it's safe to say I have found my perfect pair of headphones. A huge bonus is how cool they look. I would definitely recommend these to anyone looking for a great pair of headphones they can wear all day and experience beautiful sound with. The price is high but if music, comfort, and style are important to you, it is a small price to pay. ... show more
