  • Only rating 5 because amazing was hiding my review as it was a 1
The back portion of the tank is about two inches wide and literally CANNOT be cleaned in some places. I’m worried about the water quality of my tank because of it. It doesn’t come with a heater. I had to use the heater from my old tank. The biggest issue is the pump flow is so powerful that I have to unplug it every time I feed her. If I don’t, her food flows straight into the filter. They say it’s adjustable but the flow/pressure isn’t adjustable at all. It’s a piece that can move the stream around but the flow stays the same. So unhappy that I wasted all this money on this tank. Glad she has more space - but in every other way this tank is a downgrade from her smaller top-fin tank. ... show more

  • Nice, but not worth the cost
I purchased this 5 gallon tank to replace a 2.5 gallon acrylic tank that started to crack. I purchased this for roughly $51 on Amazon. Shipping was fast and the unit arrived in perfect condition (was worried since it is a glass tank). Overall it is a good little tank, but it definitely has some drawbacks. The biggest benefits were that it was made of glass (most smaller tanks tend to be acrylic) and the price point was reasonable for 5 gallons/glass tank. The cons would be 1) it is difficult to reach in/out to situate or remove pump (and I have pretty small hands), this made setup and cleaning a pain, 2) The water flow is so strong I have to turn off the pump to feed my fish - otherwise food just cycles around top and into filter immediately (I have tried adjusting flow nozzle and filter strength), 3) The black material on the tank that darkens/blacks out the back and back edges of tank is flimsy and damages/peels easily - particularly where the light attaches to the tank, 4) The black plastic piece that is supposed to cover the back portion of the tank isn't designed well and doesn't really lock into place causing it to shift around/get bumped/jiggled VERY easily, I feel it adds to the noise of the filter area because of how "loose" it is and it doesn't really keep the back area properly covered. It has also caused some problems where cables/tubes come out of the tank and can't get it situated, 5) After only a few weeks I had to do a deep clean and realized (after losing a guppy and 2 ghost shrimp) that despite being fairly clear water the food and waste were accumulating on the bottom in the back of tank/filter area where I couldn't see it. Previously at water changes I wasn't using a gravel filter back there thinking everything should be getting caught by the filters, I had only been filtering the gravel at water changes. Now I have one more area to monitor and clean, but it is very difficult to access. 6) The filtration isn't what I expect from MarineLand. I had a hang on pump I purchased with a Bio-wheel that lasted years on my old 10 gallon tank (think it was a 20-30 gallon filter). The filter in this tank just isn't up to snuff. I appreciate there is the mechanical and biological filtration, but all the mechanical happens at the top of the tank and nothing really filters near the bottom of the tank where food/waste settles. I had some ghost shrimp to help, but they died within a couple weeks of setting up my tank. When my guppy died too I did a full clean of filter area, scrub down of glass/tank divider, cleaned filters, and things have improved, but haven't replaced them yet until I can make sure water quality is better (despite doing water changes every week to few days since setting up tank). I have resorted to turning the filter in this unit all the way down to limit the extreme water flow at top and adjusting my AquaNeat air driven corner filter to try and move/clean more of the water closer to the bottom of the tank. Before these changes the water flow at the top of the tank was pretty extreme while not really moving the water on the lower half of the tank. 7) I thought having a glass lid would be awesome, especially since it was supposed to slide back for feeding/etc, but the concept was better than the design. You can see every single finger print from sliding the lid plus the splash back from the water in the tank causes it to look "dirty" all the time. I think I preferred having one solid lid/piece with a feeding hole to having this glass lid with the little back flap (see above also not designed well). I think the skinny/tall design is nice for taking up less space on my counter compared to a wider tank, but the limited space in the filter area is a drawback and the front area is so narrow you couldn't really fix that issue without eating away at the fishes living area. It would be nice if the light was done in such a way that I didn't have to remove it to get the filter cartridges out and/or not take it completely off to do a cleaning. Having looked at a ton of tanks when attempting to replace my old tank this tank was reasonably priced for being a smaller glass tank. Most other glass tanks in this size range were pricier and cheaper tanks tended to be acrylic which I did not want. It was also reasonably priced for being a MarineLand product which can be a little expensive, but usually has better quality (based on past experiences). However, if I had to pick a new tank all over again I would likely go with a different option. At this point my tank is starting to establish and I do not want to go through an entire new tank setup and risk losing my fish again (I used part of their original water when establishing this tank as well as tank stabilizer/bacteria supplements, but didn't seem to help much with the establishment process). If there weren't quite so many design flaws it would be awesome, but is only "ok" in my opinion. ... show more

... show more

  • Awesome little tank
This is an awesome little tank. I'm using it as a home for breeding scuds to feed to my bigger aquariums. Lots of reviews complaining about the flow rate being too fast. Nobody read the manual, all you have to do is pull out the pump and adjust the dial to make the flow rate faster or slower. Super simple, slows down to a trickle. ... show more

  • In love with this tank
This is such a beautiful tank. I love that everything is pretty much hidden, except for my heater. The instructions that came with the box did say not to put it in the filter compartment, but I have read about many people doing this, I am just too scared to do so lol. There is a notch for your heater cord, so that it does not interfere with the lid design, which is nice. It is super quiet, so quiet that sometimes I have to look and make sure the pump is still working. This tank sits on my dresser next to my bed, so it is nice that it does not make a lot of noise. I have had it set up for about 2 months now, and the light that came with is has been sufficient for the plants I have, they seem to be growing very well. I have seen other people adding more lights to theirs, there is plenty of room on the light attachment to add additional LED strips, and there are little channels that you can run that additional wire thru so that it's hidden. I have not done this myself, but I have seen where others have. Probably my favorite thing about this tank (other than its appearance, because lets be honest, it's a pretty good looking aquarium!) is the lid. It is a very thick piece of glass that slides back about an inch to an inch and a half for feeding. To remove, simply pick it up and let the condensation fall back into the aquarium and set the lid off to the side. I have even accidentally sat/stepped on it... I think you'd have to really do a number on it for it to break. It fits very snugly leaving no room for snails to escape. There is also a lid that covers the filter compartment that is a little annoying because it just precariously sits there and can easily be knocked off when you try to slide the glass lid back, but you can make some "hinges" for it by simply putting a piece of tape on either side and attaching it to the back of the aquarium. IF YOU'RE USING THIS FOR A BETTA: The filter comes cranked up all the way on high. Before you even fill this thing with water, take the pump out and turn it down as far as it will go. I also made a baffle for the output nozzle out of part of a water bottle. It's not the greatest, simply because I don't have it attached in any way so when I take the lids off for cleaning the baffle comes loose and floats away, but I have plans to remedy this, I just haven't done it yet. I took the output nozzle and turned it upside down and pointed it up a little so that it is sort of like a waterfall, then placed the baffle over it. I still have good water flow throughout the aquarium, but it is a very gentle flow and I do not find it to bother my betta at all. I did hot rod the filter box by adding some additional biosponge, there is PUH-LENTY of room back there to stash all sorts of bio-media. If you look you youtube, Aquarium Co-op has a very informative video on how to maximize your filter for this tank. Just search for Aquarium Co-op Marineland 5 Gallon and it should be the first one to pop up. Overall, this is my favorite aquarium that I own because it looks great, it's quiet, maintaining it is super easy, and it is well made. I just ordered another one that arrived a few minutes ago... unfortunately, I accidentally ordered the 3 gallon (in the older model with the different light bar) because the 5 gallon is no longer available for the moment, and I did not realize when I purchased it that there was even a 3 gallon option. Whoops! My bad for not looking closely enough, because I was wanting to also upgrade him to a 5 gallon. But nevertheless, I am keeping it for my betta at work because the tank he has (halfmoon plastic tank) is cheap, flimsy, and just overall a pain in the rear to deal with, it will be my new "hospital" tank. ... show more
