  • Love it!
Size: 30 - 50 Gallon Aquarium, 200 GPH Pattern Name: Filter
I have had this filter since September of 2023 and it's still working great. It is a little noisy, but I don't mind the noise. Some things to know is if it starts not sucking up water, it probably is at a low water level. I just fill it up some more and it works again. It oxygenates the water nicely and cleans it. Very good filter! ... show more

  • Powerful Filter That Works Great When Kept Clean
Size: 50 - 75 Gallon Aquarium, 350 GPH Pattern Name: Filter
This is the filter that I use for my 30 gallon tank. It’s rated for 50-70 gallon but I like to over filter because my freshwater puffers are messy eaters. Marineland is a pretty well known brand in the hobby and I own several other of their products. None of them have ever given me any trouble and that includes this filter. It’s a little bulky but that doesn’t matter as long as it works imo. I bought my tank second hand so before I got this, I was using one that came with it. Didn’t last long though. I ended up having to replace it with this after just a month. Luckily I was smart enough to save some of the media so I could seed the new filter. Pros: (1) Its pretty quiet most of the time. It gets louder if your water level drops below a certain point but you can prevent that easily by replenishing the water. I try to do that every day if I remember. (2) The filter is easy to put together. There’s a diagram that you can follow but it’s literally just common sense. Link the pieces together, put in the cartridge and that’s about it. Took me maybe two or three minutes max. (3) Set up is quick. Once you’ve hung it to your tank, you pour water in the chamber until the mechanism starts to spin. Then you can put the lids on which sit at the top. This step took less than a minute. (4) It does a good job of dealing with the bio load. I wouldn’t say that my tank is overstocked but like I said before my puffers are messy eaters. With this filter, my nitrite and ammonia levels are always at 0. Nitrates depends on whether or not I’ve changed the water recently but usually hovers at around 10ppm. (5) Easy to clean. I take the lid off and give it a good rinse with the tank water. Sometimes I like to use a bottle cleaning brush to remove algae that’s formed in the crevices. I actually got a set of 5 here on Amazon - blue ones from a brand called Turbo Cons: (1) There’s no way to control the flow of the water. Fortunately my puffers can deal with it no problem but I can see how it can be an issue for some fish like bettas. I suppose you can always do the “water bottle trick” though to slow it down. (2) I mentioned this already but this filter is bulky. If you want something nicer-looking, get something else. This will not be a good match for your rimless tank. I have mine in the corner and it still looks pretty intrusive. (3) The wheel splashes sometimes. I have a lid so I don’t have to worry about the water getting out but it would be nice if it was less splashy. It always causes a bunch of bubbles to form on the side. In conclusion, this is a good filter but it does have some drawbacks- the most obvious being the way it looks. Yes it’s not pretty but it gets the job done well. You can’t control the water flow like other filters but it’s also more quiet than others. ... show more

  • Powerful and quiet!
Size: 30 - 50 Gallon Aquarium, 200 GPH Pattern Name: Filter
I bought this because I moved up in tank size and I couldn't be happier! I thought the larger size might be too noisy for my small office where my tank is, but it is very quiet. Tank stay clear and the new fish seem to be very happy. Filter changes and cleaning are easy peasy, and the price was reasonable. ... show more

  • Works Great, Biowheel does NOT turn. ~Puchased May 2023
Size: 30 - 50 Gallon Aquarium, 200 GPH Pattern Name: Filter
I have kept aquariums since I was knee high to a duck and I KNOW Marineland has a Great reputation for having excellent products. I knew I couldn't go wrong with a HOB filter, especially being a Marineland! Puchased the Marineland Penguin 200 Power Filter, 200GPH May 2023 it has worked well on establishing a new aquarium, Up and Running on a 40 Extra high, Planted Aquarium (substrate: Soil,Sand, Gravel): The Filter comes with little plastic lids for the top of the filter covers the Intake/Filter area and the biowheel area. I did have to tape the biowheel cover to the filter due to minimal rattling (Easy fix, NOT a deal breaker) I like this idea of the lids it prevents splashing and lowering evaporation. Pump is quiet and has great lifting power to self-prime and great flow! The Intake tube is in 3 parts to customize the length for your particular needs. My Aquarium is 24" tall and therefore required both tubes to ensure collection near the bottom of the Tank. At the midsection of the intake tubing there is also a "flow control" gate/switch built into the tubing to draw in water at the mid level so you can pull water from just the bottom or both bottom and middle. Very cool design idea! :) This model has a space to hold 2 filter cartridges which is nice, especially if you have a planted aquarium and your "Finned Babies" are breeding machines! Anyone want some very Healthy and Robust Black Mollies, Molly Guppy Crosses!? lol More Babies = more waste! :( The pump has nice flow and cleans well. My experience, as my Planted Aquarium becomes well established/aged... Due to my tank size/shape and the inhabitants rapidly overpopulated their forever home, Mollies breed like Guppies, the Filter is not able to keep up with the waste load. I am currently dealing with brown algae in the water column as well as Population control as the filter struggles in keeping the water polished. :( (Using API Algeafix and Accuclear, along with 2-3 25-30% water changes weekly and having to rinse the filters every other day (water tests are all perfect, NO Ammonia/nitrates as it should be in a heavily planted aquarium). At a loss, I feel the filter is just not handling my particular Aquarium's demands... I ordered a larger Canister filter (link below) and will put this MarineLand Penguin 200 Power Filter on my 15gal. back-up/hospital tank it has no substrate, and minimal fake plants for the "Fin Baby's" comfort (should the need ever arise). To sum it up: I recommend the MarineLand Penguin 200 Power Filter, 200GPH for up to 40 gallon (Max) with MINIMAL population OR Strict Population Control! Recommendation: If you have 40Gal and are putting in Live bearers, I recommend going up a filter size or 2 because life throws obstacles at us and before you know it you have a tank full of Live Bearers and they can be tricky to re-home... not everyone has a neighbor with Fish Eating Fish nor can conscientiously send their babies to their demise. Also Note the Biowheel is basically useless, it does NOT turn. Do NOT let this one minor design flaw deter you from purchasing this Filter. Thank you for your time and Happy Aquarium Keeping! :) Canister Filter 370GPH w/UV light: https://a.co/d/2OWJ8Qb Please note that I have only just ordered this filter (Feb 2024) and cannot endorse or recommend the canister filter based on personal experience. The Canister I purchased is based on my needs and has MANY positive reviews. I included this for those who may be in a situation like mine & are curious as to what I am replacing the Marineland HOB filter with. ~Look for my review around April 2024 ... show more
