  • Easy to install!
Size: 50"
I was unsure whether to buy this rack or one of the cheaper foam rafts. I decided to go with this one because I was worried about the kayaks being secure. I am very happy I spent the extra money! I used this roof rack on a Toyota Camry and attached two set of J hooks to the rack. The process of setting up the rack, adding the J hooks and attaching the rack to my car was really easy and fast. It took a little playing around to position the suction cups on a flat part of my roof, but once that was done the whole thing felt very secure. My husband and I have used it a few times to transport two kayaks and it seems very sturdy and we've had no problems. It makes a little noise when we go higher than 65 MPH but it doesn't seem like it's at risk of falling off or anything. ... show more

  • Super impressed with this product. It works!
Size: 50"
I am really impressed with the Malone Versarail. It is easy enough to attach in just a few minutes (after the initial installation which takes 45 min or so); it is secure enough for highway driving; and it is quiet (it doesn't create wind noise when you are speeding along at 70 mph). The key is to read and follow the instructions. And, I rather think this isn't a good long term solution for transporting kayaks; I plan to stop using it once I see signs of wear. We use it on my wife's 2002 Honda Civic, to carry two kayaks on Thule Hullaport J-hooks. I worried that it would be little better than strapping the boats on the roof with foam blocks. But it isn't like that all all. The product itself is sturdy. The bars rest on large suction cups at the bottom of the adjustable towers. You position the suction cups as close to the edge of the car roof as possible, because that is where the car frame is strongest. So unlike what happens when you strap kayaks on foam blocks on a bare roof, with the Malone versarail you won't dent your roof. The instructions say that the product works even if one of the suction cups gets unstuck. But so far, that hasn't happened. Once you attach the straps that go through the car doors and give each tower a push, the suction cups stick well and the bars are surprisingly stable. The suction cups are easy to unstick by pulling a tab, and they do not leave any marks that I have noticed. The straps and metal buckles are very strong. The straps may not seem to pull very tightly, but once you close the doors they are sufficiently tight. The straps do not vibrate or cause noise as you speed along down the road. The first installation isn't hard, but it is just a bit fussy. You need to position the towers evenly, and the bars within the towers. Don't overtighten the metal screw that attaches the towers to the bars; there is supposed to be some looseness here. You need to position the bars at least 2 feet apart. What we did after the first use was to mark the position of the towers on the car roof with a sharpie marker. The marks fade in time (but we don't care because it is an old car). This makes it very easy to set up for the next trip. We take the Malone Versa rail off the car after each trip and then install it anew for the next trip. I am pretty sure that it what the manufacturers intend you do do. So its not like an expensive Thule or Yakima car roof rack that you install once and leave there for good. The reason to not store it strapped to your car is that sun and rain could wear out the straps, and once they go, the product isn't going to work. We have used it for trips involving a few hours of driving on the freeway with no problem. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully. They say important things like, don't use the product in the rain. Water will run through the straps and into the car. I am not sure the suction cups will work as well if wet. The instructions say to remove dust with a cloth from the suction cups and the part of the roof where they will be sticking. This improves the suction. Be sure to buy the right length bars for your car. I have no idea how long the product lasts. If I see any wear or tear on the straps or suction cups I plan to discontinue using it. For us, this is a very affordable (I think I paid $140) short term solution for carrying kayaks on a car that we do not plan to keep long enough for it to be worth fitting with a $500 to $700 Thule or Yakima roof rack. If you don't have a lot of money but you want to take up kayaking or some other hobby that requires hauling things on your older car, this will probably work for you, for a while at least. ... show more

  • Works for me
Size: 50"
I bought one of the cheaper returned ones, saved $40, works on my 2010 Hyundai Sonata (like suggested), can be a little tricky to install till you dial it in, remember to open your doors to run the straps thru, NOT the windows Takes practice but I've thrown my 70 lb kayak on top several times already without a hitch I also use pool noodles cut lengthwise to attach to the cross rails to give my kayak a little sumthin soft to lie on Buy a used one if its available .. it works perfectly ... show more

  • Super secure!
Size: 50"
At first I was a little apprehensive on spending the money for this crossbar specially with all the cheaper options here on Amazon but Im glad I got it. I have mine installed on top of my 2013 Corolla and it fits perfectly and best of all, it is rock-solid when you have the straps cinched down. Please pay close attention though when positioning the suction cups, it is meant more for gripping the top/side frame of your car than suctioning on to your roof. I use mine every weekend to car-top my 10 foot Oldtown Vapor going in highway speed and it stayed very secure. Im a Malone product believer now. ... show more

  • Very sturdy - Impressed with the quality
Size: 50"
I researched for several weeks looking at cross-bars for our vehicles to transport our kayaks. We have a Ford Escape (2016) and a Nissan Altima (2005), and neither has side rails. I wanted something that I could use on either vehicle. At first, I looked at the bars which connect with hooking systems. However, I was afraid they wouldn't be sturdy enough. Also, I discovered that each of my vehicles would need a different size bar for most of these hook-type systems. So, I finally decided to go with the Malone VersaRail system instead. I purchased the shorter (50") style, because I felt the longer ones would hang over the sides of our Nissan too much. I wasn't crazy about having to use the straps - primarily because of water wicking into the vehicle in case of rain. It also meant that I would have to take them off the vehicle when I wasn't going to be using them. On the other hand, I felt the strap system would be more secure than the other systems and should be easy to install and remove. Well, I have been very pleased with these bars from the moment I opened the box. They are even more sturdy than I imagined. Yet they are light weight enough that they are handled easily. I was able to install my J-bar mounts for the kayaks on these bars and keep them there. When we are ready to go, we just set the bars (J-bars and all) on top of either car, strap the VersaRails on, load up the kayaks and we're on our way. We have taken several short trips with the kayaks loaded on top. We also took one longer trip (1 hour each way) which included significant time on the interstate at 70 mph. They stayed in perfect position and the kayaks were perfectly secured. It takes us about 15 minutes to get the VersaRails and kayaks loaded up on the roof of the Escape, and about 5 minutes to get everything back down. We are very pleased with this purchase and would recommend them to anyone. ... show more
