  • Really good kit for the occasional brewer
Great kit for the novice to intermediate home brewers with MOST of what you'll need. This kit was the most complete I had found, but it lacks a hydrometer test jar and floating thermometer which I think are necessities for home brewing. I considered taking away a star for lacking these essentials, but thought it would be more fair to rate it on what it had, not what it didn't have. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because bottle capper was far inferior to one I already owned. I started bottling using the one from the kit, but when compressing the levers the cap often slipped out of place (luckily I sanitized a lot of spares), and in one instance broke the lip of a bottle (oh well, had to drink that one, so not a total loss). After a few ruined caps and a broken bottle I finished bottling with my old capper. On the plus side, the 6.5 gallon fermenting bucket lid had a tight fit and a pre-drilled hole with a grommet for the airlock making it very easy to monitor the fermentation process while maintaining a sanitary environment. I found this much more convenient than fermenting in a 5 gallon glass carboy with a rubber stopper and blow off tube. And the auto siphon worked great for transferring the beer from the fermenting bucket to the bottling bucket without stirring up the yeast and hops sediment at the bottom of the fermenter. Clean up was easy too. I cracked open my first bottle 4 weeks after starting a batch (2 weeks in fermenter, 2 weeks in bottles) using this kit for the first time and it was the best ale I've made so far. No sediment at the bottom of the bottle, and it had a thick, creamy head and carbonation bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass from the first sip to the last, ... show more

  • Great Value, but Think Long Term
This was one of the better kits in my research of homebrew equipment. The fact that it included an auto-siphon was a big plus for me. One lesson learned though is that if you think you will keep doing homebrews in the future, I would invest in the equipment a la carte, and buy glass carboys instead of this plastic bucket. The other downside is that this only includes one plastic fermentor (bucket), and certain beer recipes call for a secondary fermentor. I was able to buy a 6 gallon bucket and lid for $8 at a goods store to amplify this kit. However, after 3 brews, the buckets began to retain the hoppy odor. This is why you may want to consider going for glass carboys - easier to clean and don't retain the smell. If you are tentative about the whole homebrew thing, this kit is definitely for you. It's a great value and gets you into the game for the best price. From there, you can see if you want to upgrade as you go! ... show more

  • Good starting kit
I can't write about this kit completely as I have just bottled my first batch. So, all-in-all, I really like this kit. It was priced very competitively with any of the other kits out there and comes with an auto-siphon, which was great for getting the transfer to bottling bucket started. The one item that it doesn't really come with is a sanitizer. It came with B-brite, which is labeled on its packaging as a cleanser, not a sanitizer. However, I have heard different takes on whether it is a sanitizer or not. So, luckily my batched made it through the fermentation, probably due to the fact that I still cleaned it like crazy thinking I was sanitizing it. For bottling, I just went with the old bleach water sanitizing method given by John Palmer. I will probably look to get Star-san due to its quick contact time. So, back to the kit. All items functioned well for their intended purpose. The tubing gives you plenty of length to get the job done and the bottle wand is great. So, I would definitely recommend this kit, it worked great and I'm already planning my next brew. ... show more

  • Good price for a decent startup kit
It came with the primary fermenting bucket w/ grommeted lid & airlock, bottling bucket w/ spigot, auto-siphon, hose for the auto-siphon, capper, bottle brush, bottling wand, fermenter stick on thermometer, a "How to Brew" book, B-Brite cleanser (which according to the web can be used as sanitizer if you soak for 15+ minutes however, the description says it comes with C-Brite not B-Brite. Also from reading on the web, the sanitization can be questionable since you have to rinse B-Brite and unless using sterile water you kind of void the sanitization effect), and a hydrometer. I had to supply my own hydrometer test tube, but I had a graduated cylinder on hand so no worries. UPDATE - just finished fermenting my first batch. All the tools in the kit worked great! Capper worked fine, buckets, auto siphon, all of it. Tasted a brew after 3 days bottle conditioning - while still a bit flat, it is good and this equipment was everything I needed to ferment and bottle. I did all grain, so naturally I had the mash tun and outdoor boil kettle, but if you are doing extract this would work out great as well with just a few kettles on the stove top. ... show more

  • Great kit to start brewing your own beer
I did my first homebrew with this kit not too long ago. The fermenting bucket and bottling bucket are both food grade plastic and seem like they will hold up for a long time. The kit includes a fermentation thermometer to go on the bottling bucket which is a nice touch. The bottle filler works very well and made bottling quick and easy. The auto siphon was invaluable and I would not want to transfer the liquid between buckets without it. The only thing that I may replace soon is the capper. It works fairly well but seems a little flimsy and I had to try a few times on some of my bottles to get the caps to go on correctly. This is a great kit to start out brewing your own beer with. ... show more
