Description

As a supplier of military watches for the U.S. Navy SEALs and U.S. Air Force, Luminox watches are designed to handle any sort of environment at any given moment. Luminox expanded the collection to include an entire line of watches of many types and styles created for the active consumer, the sportsman, law enforcement and military groups. The advantage of a Luminox in comparison to other watches is its glow-in-the-dark capability. Every Luminox watch uses a self-powered system of illumination powered by very small gas lights (borosilicate glass capsules). These allow the watch to glow continuously for 25 years while having a much brighter illumination system. Luminox watches need no external light source to “charge” the point on the dial or hands in order to glow as do conventional luminous watches. Nor do they require the push of a button to light the dial as do watches with electroluminescence. Being able to read the watches in any conditions, even in total darkness, is an important requirement of many military and law enforcement agencies.

  • LAST UPDATE 9/3/15: Simple Watch--But WOW! Watch Out When The Sun Goes Down!
FIRST LOOK! This watch arrived today 7/1/15 in the mail from Amazon. I will be updating this again, later, after I have thoroughly examined it and have experienced it at night. It arrived in an official Luminox box with a nicely made case for the watch with a zipper closure. The watch is very simple, no bells and whistles except the date function and a way to synch the seconds for accuracy. Seems well made, but the bezel feels cheap and flimsy when you turn it. What didn't come with the watch is the Amazon warranty agreement from Assuron. Luminox apparently will not honor the warranty since it came from Amazon and in turn, Amazon is using Assuron for any warranty issues. I will have to contact Amazon to clarify the warranty should I keep this timepiece. I have been trying out a Seiko SSC305 (read my review on this watch there) and the main issue about the Seiko is that it is hard to read in low light at all times. I refer to low light as in restaurant lighting, early in the morning, and at dusk. The Seiko line of analog watches uses a luminescence paint on the hands and hour ticks for night use called "Lumibrite." The Seiko manual was very sketchy in explaining how Lumibrite works. Bottom line, after research, if you hold the Seikovwatch to a bright light for about 5 minutes, the hands etc. will glow providing about 3-5 hours of illumination. So I was very interested in the Luminox watch because it uses Tritium gas vials to provide night illumination. I will have to update to tell how well it works and whether this simple watch is better than the Seiko, because the Seiko has plenty of bells and whistles and is definitely well-made. So, to conclude this "first look," the Luminox is very simple, no bells and whistles, and is decidedly un-noteworthy. People that see me wearing this watch won't give it a second glance. The saving grace, hopefully, will be the tritium feature for night time viewing. UPDATE, JULY 05, 2015: This Luminox watch has a big hidden WOW! factor: I can confirm, 100%, that the Luminox 0215 Sentry watch is VERY visible at night, in restaurants, at dawn, at dusk, and any other low light situation, While otherwise not noteworthy, the Luminox really "shines" at night--in more ways than one. I had cataract surgery on both eyes a few years ago and this means it is very difficult for me to read/comprehend anything close up. Indiglo digital watches, while bright, can't be read without having glasses on day or night. Above, I spoke of the Seiko SSC305's shortcomings. I cannot say enough about the Luminox and how easy it is to read the watch in all conditions, including pitch black. It is absolutely incredible. I was sure I would be returning this watch due to its "cheap look." No more. The ugly duckling becomes a swan as soon as the sun goes down. Some small quibbles: The numerals do not have Tritium vials, only some kind of luminiscient paint and the luminiscience goes away quickly. But the hands and markers of the watch do have Tritium vials and are insanely bright so its easy to tell the time. The 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock markers have orange Tritium vials. The orange color doesn't show up very well at all. The color is very dull and washed out; one can hardly even notice the color. So having the orange color doesn't really do anything for me. The watchband is OK... made from some kind of silicone rubber with a buckle. Would much prefer a metal clasp or expanding band. Now to the warranty: Amazon is using Asuron for this. I've confirmed it is good for two years and covers just about everything. Who Asuron would use for any repairs is unknown. But I'm going to risk it. So this watch now has 5 stars. LAST UPDATE September 03, 2015: I have now owned this watch for just over 2 months. To the nay-sayers, I have to say that I have not found anything to complain about (with cavaats). It has fast become my go-to watch. The watch is fantastically accurate. I have an atomic watch and I have not found it necessary to adjust the time in the Luminox watch in the last six weeks. It is still within a second or two of the atomic time watch. The watch has a hacking feature. The second hand stops when you pull out the stem, making it easy to set the watch accurately to the second. And, as I have previously reported, the tritium hands and markers are incredibly bright. Now as to the cavaats: Not all of the hour markers have tritium markers. Curiously, some of the cardinal numbers do not have tritium markers, for example the six, 12, 9, and three. Neither do the two, four, eight and 10. At night, without my glasses, I can get confused. I think I am reading 4:30 a.m. when it is actually 5:30 a.m. So I wish all hour markers were tritium. As it is, there are just too few of them for these tired old eyes to comprehend--without glasses on. Despite this flaw, night viewing is still lightyears ahead of the non tritium competition. The other cavaat is that I wish the watch came with a bracelet type watch band with no buckle. This will be my last update unless something wierd happens. ... show more

  • Died
Great watch while it lasted, was always accurate, it lasted a whole 22 months and simply died, changed the battery and it wouldn't start, thought I had a bad battery, nope, even the old battery still had a lot of juice left in it, I never dropped it and never got it wet. Poor quality, won't buy this brand again. ... show more

  • Good Watch, very visible in the dark
I like a watch that can be checked in the dark and this watch fits the bill very well. Very visible and easy to read, Hour markers and hands are great. The calendar date is not so easy to read though, its small and at an angle.

  • You can actually read the time in the middle of the night
The reason I purchased this watch was the illumination system. While camping, I can see the time in the middle of the night without turning on a flashlight and disturbing other people (most luminous watches fade out after about 2 hours in darkness). The rubber strap does not deteriorate from sweaty wrists like leather does. The polymer case is very light, yet tough. I also own the original "Navy Seals" version that is now about 20 years old. The marker brightness is starting to fade but still very readable in the dark. The mineral crystal on the older watch has a couple of light scratches, but the case and strap are near mint. I would prefer a sapphire crystal, but that is considerably more expensive in a Luminox watch. The new watch has a "K1" hardened mineral crystal. I don't know if that is more scratch resistant than the old one. The fact that these watches are Swiss made does not hurt their image. ... show more

  • Feedback-gratitude-bragging!
Finally, my super watch reached me from the USA. I searched for them for a long time, the model was discontinued, I barely found it on Amazon. Bought for $ 130, the same model for 23 years costs $ 350-400. A Swiss brand, such watches are supplied for the US army, the purchase was inspired by Guy Ritchie's film "The Covenant", there are cool American soldiers very fashionable and all with tactical watches. In fact, the watch is simple, ordinary quartz, carbon fiber case, mineral glass (some kind of super-strong), waterproof 100m, tritium backlight (radioactive gas, tritium glows in the dark during decay), silicone strap. Thanks to everyone who took part in the events for the delivery of my New Year's gift! ... show more
