  • Gorgeous book! But caption the photos with the locations!
I love this book. A real treat for star-gazers who like to travel. I have so many ideas for my next adventures thanks to this book. It also has info on how to be a Dark Skies advocate in your own community, something I wasn’t even aware of! My only issue is that they don’t add captions to the beautiful photos letting you know where they were taken, a real failure for a travel-focused book. Otherwise, highly recommended! ... show more

  • Tiny text and short section on locations in the US
Contains only a few pages on dark sky locations in the US which was not clear from the desceiprion. (14 pages sides to be exact). I was hoping to find some locations for stargazing trips. Text is also incredibly small. I normally don't wear glasses to read but am forced to with this book. Sorry I missed my return window. ... show more

  • Dark Skies (Lonely Planet) by Valerie Stimac is a lovely guide to sky watching (astrotourism)
Dark Skies (Lonely Planet) by Valerie Stimac is a lovely guide to nighttime sky watching. Ms. Stimac is a dark sky expert and carefully researched this book on astrotourism. This guide covers "35 dark-sky sites and national parks, where to see the aurora, [and] the next decade of total solar eclipses." She adds additional information on "how to view rocket launches, plus the lowdown on commercial space flight, observatories and meteor showers." Following her travel guide could keep you very busy for quite a while. The book is divided into sections to assist you in planning your adventures. They are: 1. Stargazing - basics of appreciating the dark sky. 2. Dark Places - 35 of the best places around the globe for stargazing. 3. Astronomy in Action - some of the world's top research facilities and observatories. 4. Meteor Showers - what you need to know about meteor showers. 5. With Ms. Stimac's assistance, you can plan an incredible series of trips that will be amazing. I wish I could go on one right now. We as a family have always been fascinated by astronomy and used to make regular treks out to the desert to watch various miracles in the night skies. My boys had fine telescopes so they could find the sky treasures themselves. My older son had a wonderful oceanographic job that took him all over the globe and when he was onboard the research vessel, he would spend many nights out on deck stargazing. He loved it. This book is a treasure and if you are interested in watching the night sky and its treasures, get this book to guide your way. ... show more
