  • Excellent Value
Purchasing professional instruments for children is a ludicrous proposition. That is where this product comes in. For my oldest son we purchased an intermediate Trombone. He did not appreciate and has treated it poorly. Now I am left with angry feelings everytime I see it. We purchased it used from a local music shop that rents to students. They gave us a payment plan but charged us nearly full price for it, something we didn't realize at the time. My wife and I decided after this that we would pay less for a first instrument, and if they liked it and stuck with it, then later purchase an intermediate when they would appreciate it and know better how to care for it. After that experience we started looking online for instruments. I was very nervous at first as there are so many ways this can go wrong. However, it didnt exactly go right buying locally. For my next child we bought a flute off of Amazon for a very low price. It has worked pretty well, but had some problems. We probably paid too little for it. That said she has played for three years on it and it continues to work well. This trumpet was purchased for my 2nd son and I am very happy with it. Having played trumpet myself I am quite satisfied with its quality. The valves have excellent movement and it makes good sound. I prefer my Selmer student model to this one but they are quite similar and you cannot purchase the same Selmer that I had 20 years ago, they are now made in China like this one. Seating of the valves is a little tricky in the Hutchen but once seated they are good. A key has stuck on a couple of occasions, but with some oil this is not a problem. The case was very nice and sturdy and provides ample protection with some storage for accessories. I would and have highly recommended this trumpet for a first trumpet to any who would listen. I definitely recommend buying online for the first instrument. The local rental shops take advantage of students and their parents. Online can be the same, but at least the total bill is less. If the student sticks with it they will be able to make an informed decision later when it is time to buy an intermediate instrument. -- Update 3/2013 -- It has been almost a year now and the trumpet is working beautifully. My son's teacher has gone out of her way to comment on multiple occasions about the quality of the sound from this horn. My son was a little dissapointed at first, he wanted a black one(come on who paints horns black), but as he has used it and learned about it he has completely changed his mind and is quite proud to have it. -- Oct 2013 My son manged to do some pretty substantial damage to the bell on this horn, it is still functional, but not nearly as pretty. Best part was I didn't have to kill him for destroying a $600 horn. Should he decided to continue, which I do not expect, I am sure that he would treat his second horn with much greater care. My youngest son will enter Jr High next year and start learning and instrument. I have asked him which one he wants to play and it looks like I will be buying another trumpet. I have no hesitation in saying it will be another LJ Hutchen Trumpet. ... show more

  • Why rent to own when you can own?
My daughter was in need of a new trumpet for middle school. In elementary school she used my older King cornet and a Pan-American trumpet. For marching band, etc. we wanted her to have a new piece. I looked around at some of the rent-to-own trumpets (which are largely entry level Conn type). I played them (I played from elementary school to college). Meh. I thought perhaps I would buy one of the cheap import models that you see on Ebay and here. Then I ran across this model. After reading the glowing reviews I thought I would spend the $250 or so (basically a few of the rent-to-own payments) and try out this model. It comes in a plastic no frills case that seems reasonably well made and fairly light. the trumpet itself is attractive and feels average weight. Valve action is good. I did not disassemble, clean, and oil since it seems to be pretty well lubricated as-packed. There is a light machining/polishing mark on the final turn of the horn, but nothing that I would send it back for. It was purchased as an entry-level horn she can march in inclement WV weather, so a few light machine marks mean nothing. The sound is full and warm. I would DEFINITELY place the playability above the rent-to-own jobbies. I played both within a week of each other and this is the better horn. If you are in my position - a parent who wants to get the horn that will get your kid through High School band, this is the one. Go no where else, you don't need to hem and haw anymore. This is a quality horn that I wouldn't have balked to spend more on than I did. Hell, a used intro level Bach won't get you much more than this one. I know I seem like I'm gushing a bit. I read a critical review that suggested some of the reviews were plants. Well, mine is not. I have played many different brands of trumpets. This is not a Bach Strad, but your middle school kid doesn't need that. Now, I'm off to grab my daughter's trumpet to play some Children of Sanchez. ... show more

The trumpet was an instrument I always wanted to learn how to play. So I finally worked up the courage to finally buy one. My original purchase was for the Healy Bb trumpet but with a little mix up I ended up buying the LJ Hutchen instead. When it came in the mail I felt like a kid on Christmas morning and tore open the box and packaging (very carefully obviously) and what I saw inside was nothing short of breathtaking! The highly polished gold, silver and rose brass shined and you could almost hear that stereotypical choir singing in the background. Of course have absolutely no experience on any brass instrument I couldn't make a sound to save my life....unless a hollow tube sound counts then I was well on my way. Now that some time has gone by i've almost figured out my embouchure I can honestly say that the trumpet sounds great.....at least to me. I'm not ready to subject anyone to my mystifying one note just yet. Thank god for practice mutes :p. That action on the valves is very smooth and effortless. And taking apart everything and putting it back is a breeze as well. It's so easy even a n00b like me can do it. I definitely recommend this to anyone interested in learning to play. As a side note (no pun intended) because of the little mix up that occurred I was in contact with Hyson Music and I can't say enough great things about them. They were very nice, professional and even took the time to write me and contact me on the phone. What business does that these days when there's a a tiny discrepancy? Justine and Jesse at Hyson Music are very honest and professional people that go above and beyond the call of duty. This is definitely the company you want to do business with because they stand behind their products and always there if anything should come up. Keep up the great work. ... show more
