  • It's a cheap toy--but a cool toy.
This is definately a toy. It works... You can see things and that is really cool for the price. There are imperfections in the view--I mean every microscope has some.... But there is more particles and scratches visable through the glass than any microscope I've ever used before. Again, this is only a toy so I'm not upset by it--but I just want to say that in case you want a better feel for what a product like this is going to be before you buy it. The plastic body is a bit flimsy but still useable. I took it apart a little and I wanna note the wire sodering definately could be broken by the thing falling off a desk or something--they definately were skimpy with materials. But the only thing I am frustrated with is that it is hard to focus it enough to see the tiny details. I saw other reviewers kinda mention this but I just wanna explain what it feels like is happening-- So you can like... Focus enough to see a quite a bit of what your looking at, but it's not perfect, so you can't see crisp details. I think the difference in making the image crisp and it being extremely difficult to do so is because of the cheap parts--the adjustment is so small, and the parts are very rough for such a transition, and will not settle exactly where the image is crisp, even if you are dextrous enough to microadjust it to the right place. I'm still giving this five stars because it is a working product and very fuctional for the price, but be aware that there are a lot of imperfections that will obscure the view, and it does focus enough to see large details but not enough to make the image crisp enough to see smaller details. Personal story--when I was a child, I asked for toy microscopes and my father said the cheap ones similar to this at walmart were too low quality to bother with, and that made me scared they didn't work at all. If I knew it just meant the image would be just a little blurry, I know I still would have been very happy with this as a child. So if you are buying this for child and you don't have the budget for better quality--don't be scared about that. Just tell them to be careful with since it does feel a little fragile --but a microscope is a delicate intrument so you should alway be careful with one anyways. Also it came with a sample prepared slide of crysals. I didn't know it would--and bought a set of prepared slides so my kids would have something already prepared to look at. If I knew it came with a prepared slide I might not have bought more--I have tight budget--so that's why I want to be clear it has one. I have a picture of the included prepared slide and two other botony slides attached to try and show what looking through the microscope is like. ... show more

  • Decent.
It's pretty decent for the price. I bought it for my three-year-old, so we could look at things with it. The English translations on the package it comes in are pretty entertaining. ("Maintenance: Note the dust with a soft cloth, do not use in the dust!") The biggest disappointment is that it does not come with the 12 slides shown in the picture. I didn't even realize it until I came back to review it. It does come with one slide that has what looks like some kind of pollen... maybe... but it doesn't say what it is. It does come with four blank slides, though, so we've been looking at onion skins, salt crystals, and pond water with it. Not a bad purchase. ... show more

  • very light microscope that it pretty reasonable for the price (except that as I write ...
This is an all plastic, very light microscope that it pretty reasonable for the price (except that as I write this is is now $6 cheaper after christmas...). My biggest complaint would be that it doesn't come with cover slips, which any scientist will tell you, kind of defeats the purpose of a microscope. Upon review of product description, they do not include cover slips in the "comes with" list, so "shame on me" I guess for not picking up on that. Also, the higher 2 magnification don't work too well - really hard to get anything in focus, but the 100x mag pretty much covers the basic stuff. If your looking to see really small things like cellular components - this is not the microscope for that. The kidos get a little disappointed though with turning the carousel and everything is black or can't focus on the 400 and 1200x mag. This may improve after I buy some cover slips though. I would say it is good for kids from 4-7 ish though. My 6 year old likes it alot. I give it 4 stars as long as it stays between $20-25, but if marketing changes to make it sound more professional, and price gets jacked up, do some research and read reviews on some other ones, depending on what you are looking for. ... show more

  • Perfect gift for my science wiz
I bought this for my nephew for Christmas, it came when it said it would in working condition. Putting the battery in was easy and the instructions were very easy for a 9yr old to follow. He uses it everyday I bought extra slides for it and he always comes home with something to look under the microscope. ... show more

  • not bad for cheap kids or beginners
Not bad for $15, but plastic is a bit cheap and is a little hard to focus. Great for a kids or beginner if you don't want spend too much on a microscope

  • Present for 6 year old
Not a bad little scope for the 6 thru 8 year old range for learning the basics of using a microscope. The LED is a bit too bright "over washing" objects being viewed at the lower magnification (using the adjustable LED knob doesn't help much). Optics are OK for the price range but objects being viewed will be difficult to bring into focus with no fine focusing knob. Also, and most importantly, switching magnifications will require repositioning the specimen to bring it into the field of view. But then again, this scope is just for kids. (And why the ridiculous little screw to open the battery cover...I think my vacuum cleaner may some day find it in the carpet cause thats where it ended up. You might need a jewelers screwdriver to open it anyway) ... show more

  • Good value for money without spending too much.
Good value for money without spending too much. Came with slides. Slides are a little flimsy for younger children but good for a little science lab to see stuff up close. In a pinch, if you do not have funds for a classroom microscope, it is good as it gets. You do not have to invest too much in case it is mishandled. Simply throw out broken one and buy another. Get good mileage out of it. ... show more
