  • Gets Even The Most Stubborn Filters Off
I'm amongst those who have a car that affords difficult, quite limited clearance to the oil filter (in my case, a 2006 Honda CR-V). Those damn cup type filter wrenches will only slip/rotate over the filter when you're trying to remove it, as there's no way to apply enough downward force on the filter to keep the wrench from pushing back up, and slipping. Infuriatingly annoying. This Lisle 63600, in contrast, grips the hell out of the filter, and removes even the most egregiously over-torqued units with ease. Be advised, however, that this filter wrench is so strong that it will crush the filter while removing it, at least for filters that were badly overtightened. Of course, this hardly matters when you're removing an old filter slated for disposal, anyway. The only thing about this wrench that I wish was of better quality is the tension spring installed thereon. It's pretty small and weak, and I can see it failing before too long. Otherwise though, this wrench is a life saver-- I had my engine drained, only to find I couldn't get the *$&# old filter off. So I overnight ordered this wrench, and in 30 seconds had that bloody overtightened filter off. No thanks to the neophyte technician who torqued the hell out of the old filter when installing it in the first place. *#&#@!! Earth to oil changers: You only need hand-tighten an oil filter! ... show more

  • Works great on Subaru OEM oil filters
After getting fustrated with cheap plastic and other metal oil filter removal too decided to get this based on other reviewers. I'm glad I did. Update: just did an oil change on my 2016 Silverado and it took off the oil filter as well. A++

  • Great Oil filter remover
When you take your car to automotive shops for oil changes, they always over tighten the oil filter. I had a hard time removing the oil filter from my Toyota Corolla 2003 due to its awkward positioning and location of the oil filter, but with the Lisle 63600 Oil Filter Tool it was snap with a 3/8's socket wrench. The Oil Filter tool comes greased in its shrink wrapped, so if you're worried about getting your hands dirty, please use gloves. When cranked clockwise, the oil filter tool extends 4 inches in diameter to grab your filter. Don't forget to position an oil drip/drain pan beneath your oil filter to catch any oil that remains in the filter when you remove it! ... show more

  • Removes oil filters but will not tighten them
Now that I reread the item description, I see that it doesn't mention that this tool TIGHTENS oil filters, but it's called an "oil filter tool," not an "oil filter removal tool," so I think it should do both. For most filters, you only need about a 1/4 turn after it's finger-tight (I think), which wouldn't require a tool, but my car's is supposed to be one full turn, which is not easy for me to do by hand. The last few times, I've used Fram oil filters, which have a grippy top which is apparently what allowed me to tighten them enough with this tool. But using a filter with a smooth top, as I did today, there is no grip whatsoever, and the tool just slides around the edges, doing nothing. For the majority of people this tool will probably work, but be advised that it's not meant for tightening. And it should say this explicitly in the description. ... show more

  • Get the JC Performance Wrench instead.
I had a very stubborn factory oil filter (2019 hyundai ioniq) and this simply did not work. It was difficult to attach, and didn't grip the filter adequately, meaning it wouldn't remove the filter. I had purchased channel locks, and three other oil filter removal tools to attempt this replacement. Of them, the "JC Performance - Universal Two Way Oil Filter Wrench " available here at Amazon was the winner. The others, purchased at Autozone could not do it. One was a standard wrench for my filter, but doesn't fit the factory piece. Both the Lisle and the sure-bilt just didn't grip the filter enough. I have a trusty impact wrench which can give me the extra oomph when I need it, but with the wrong tool, I can't even use that. The JC Wrench worked fine with a big bar and a bit of hand power. ... show more

  • Great for stuck filters . . .
My filter was stuck on, and in a tight space where I could not grip by hand. The other tools would just slip and spin on the filter so I ordered this. No room for a strap type wrench to fit in there either. My only other option would be to hammer a screwdriver right through the filter and twist, but not really enough room to do even that. This tool grips onto the filter and digs into the metal as you twist so it will pull off even the most stuck filters. The filter might be rendered unusable, but that's why you use it with a used filter. I do not think this will be useful for installing the filter as the gripping motion might only work when tightening. Really a great tool, and Lisle makes quality tools so I chose this one over others that look similar. Lisle is a good brand. ... show more
