    • Good way to prep sketchbook pages for paint

This white gesso is a cheap and easy way to prep paper for painting on. It should work for all paint types, and on any suitable paper. I would recommend it for anyone wanting to paint in a sketchbook... since that's what I use it for. I primarily use gesso in sketchbooks for either of two purposes: First, brushing on one or two coats of white gesso will leave an under-drawing mostly visible but not too prominent, and provide a good, waterproof surface to paint over. Second, painting over unwanted drawings with three or four coats of gesso layers will mask them almost entirely and let you reuse the page. A couple of other points worth noting: watercolor and gouache will stay active longer (and watercolor will pool with hard edges more easily) over a gessoed surface. This can be advantageous in warmer environments, but it also may require that you're more sparing with the water than you might otherwise be used to. Gesso leaves a rather rough and toothy surface, almost like a sandpaper, and can show streaky brushstrokes. I found that this matters particularly when using solid media (for instance watercolor pencils) over the gesso as you see more texture than with even a toothy paper. I'm going to try putting it on with a small paint roller next time to get a more uniform surface... And I've read that you can sand the gesso to a flatter texture. ... show more

This isn't Gesso. It's simple white paint and isn't worth the time. Gesso isn't a shade of white, it's a type of paint that blocks color, perfect for when you don't want to layer 6 coats of white like I'm going to have to do now. No, I don't think even that is going to work. It's lifting the color underneath, I would give this paint negative stars if possible! ... show more

I loved this product. It does exactly as the title states ...surface prep. I have previously used another brand of gesso but it dried out so I had to purchase more. I decided to use bottle instead of jar and to go with a less expensive brand just in case it dried up as well. I was so happy with this. It is light to medium coverage and build-able. This is an essential product for any painter; whether it be for hobby, student or even professional use. Even if I have purchased a canvas that has been primed or not, I always add an additional layer or two of this gesso as it preps the surface for better adhesion of paint. It has a very fine, gritty texture but can be gently sanded with 400 grit wet or dry sandpaper in between layers. This makes your canvas or other support, super smooth which is essential - particularly in helping you achieve fine detail with your work. I'm an art snob 😉 so normally skip student art supplies and go straight for the pro version and this product was no exception. I find it can be a waste of money to purchase student grade only to have it not be of great quality, whereby you end up purchasing both (or at least I have cos I want my work to be as great as can be). So, I purchased a smaller, 8oz bottle of Liquitex Artist's Gesso (for maybe around the same price, I'm not sure) and when I ran out, I replaced it with the Basics one because of the much lower price. Honestly, I can't tell much of a difference! I believe the pro formula is more opaque and a little thicker and I like that with that series you can also choose a black or clear formula but for a standard, basic product thats essential for any artist; there isn't that much of a difference. I will continue to purchase the Basics Gesso. However, I may also try the Liquitex Professional Clear one soon, as that might be a good idea for covering my line drawing. In the meantime, I'm really, pleasantly surprised by this product and I'd highly recommend it. By the way, my Royal & Langnickel gesso brushes in the picture were also purchased from Amazon. Age used 7 to 18. A little thin. Make sure you know the purpose of using this. Needs a little education if not. 18 year old granddaughter got some drift wood, put it in AFTER drift wood dried. The acrylic paint took really good. Add black acrylic paint & then use it as a base coat under acrylic metallic & that make it pop even more. This also comes in black to avoid that step. A little pricey for the amount you get. But in my opinion it's worth it. Check out you tube for MANY helpful ways to use. ... show more

gesso shy, and i was not sure what i was getting, but i wanted the solid white medium, that is what this is. i love it. i use it often, sometimes instead of white paint. i don't know what else to say, it's the bee's knees. Didn’t really know what I was buying, I just knew that I needed to prep my unfinished wood boards in order for the resin to properly coat them, and it’s worked! I am also a painter and want to try prepping a canvas, but haven’t done so yet. It’s a very thick and opaque medium, kind of like frosting!

Love this gesso, I use it with a little bit of water. it is think as you want it to be. better than other marks I know. It is easy to apply with a wide brush in two layers. let it dry in between (30 minutes more or less depending on the canvas fabric). Personally I did not have to sand. No traces and fast absorbed.
