I bought this to protect a brand new twin mattress. The top is a soft, silky-feeling fabric. The underside is like rubber but feels soft. The fabric that goes along the sides of the mattress is very stretchy and made of a different material. The side fabric is not waterproof. It's like a mesh type fabric, almost like stretchy tights. It's not delicate though that you would poke a hole through it with normal handling. The edge along the whole cover is elasticized. The mattress my son has is 6 inches high and this cover fits perfectly. It goes over the sides and underneath easily. No tugging or struggling to get it on. This would fit a thicker mattress too because of the deep pockets. It's not noisy like a plastic cover nor does it feel hot. To me, the noise it makes is almost like that of a nice, crisp cotton sheet. My teenager is a restless sleeper. He regularly pulls his cotton fitted sheet off the mattress, but the mattress cover stays put. In the two months we've had it, it has kept his mattress looking like new (I checked it yesterday). On the first day he had the mattress, I found a wet shower towel on it that had probably been there for a half an hour. I lifted up the fitted sheet and this cover and found that the mattress was completely dry, even though the cotton sheet was damp. My teen doesn't care what he puts on the bed nor that it could possibly stain or damage it. So this mattress protector is worth buying, as long as you know the sides are not protected. I think this same company makes covers that protects the whole mattress. I wash it on delicate cycle with cold water and dry it on a cool setting then line dry when it's still a little damp because I don't want to risk damaging it. ... show more

UPDATE: About a week after reviewing my oldest child had a nighttime accident. Unfortunately it soaked through to the mattress. When washed and dried (following instructions) the sheet tore in a couple small places. I positioned these areas at his feet and decided to try again. Once again it soaked through when he had an accident. Personally this was surprising because we have used one of these on our queen mattress for 3 years now with no issues. My best guess is that it could not handle the amount of liquid in a short time. After the 3rd wash some of the stitching along the edge and elastic came undone. These are lifesavers and mattress savers. We originally bought a Queen size for our bed in 2015. It has protected our mattress perfectly from spills, diaper leaks, breastfeeding, and toddlers. We bought two of the twin size when our oldest boys got their bunk beds. So far they have once again kept all spills and leaks off the mattresses. They are not 100% infallible but about 99%. The only time I have seen a spot of breakthrough moisture is if there was a highly concentrated amount of liquid in one small spot. The sheets themselves are thin, not crinkly, and surprisingly comfortable. They are easy to wash, I do cold water and low heat/air dry for a short cycle. The sheets are sized large enough to wrap around and under the mattress so the entire top area is protected from spills. I will be using this brand in the future. I would recommend buying a second set, especially if you have kids, so that you can put it on the mattress when you do need to wash the first set. ... show more
