-It’s big, and sturdy and has held up for about a week so far -the holes seem large, may not be practical for salsa making. But I’ve spent a long time seasoning it with plenty of rice, salt and a final layer of garlic. I let it dry and it seems to be just fine. Even after leaving it for hours with the salsa inside of it I have not noticed any leaks. The pestal had a chip but it seems to work perfectly as a location for me to put my fingers for better grip, so maybe I got lucky. All in all - I like it. I’m a fan of the rough and rugged; it feels very authentic. I spend a lot of time randomly rubbing the sides in a fast motion with more garlic to impart more flavor and provide a seasoning layer. ... show more

It was easy enough to follow the video on how to prep it with ground rice. It works great for making salsa and looks amazing to display on the table. Very rustic.

    • False advertising. Made of concrete, not lava stone

It failed both the smell and hardness test. This molcajete didn't smell sulfurous like volcanic rock does, and running a knife on it left permanent marks. So the smell test tells us it's not lava stone, and the hardness test indicated that it's unlikely that it was made with volcanic stone. Now, it is possible to make concrete using basalt fibers found in lava stone. But, even if that's how this molcajete was made, that doesn't mean it's correct to say it's made of volcanic rock simply because there's a derivative of volcanic rock in it. the price was very good, particularly compared to what others charge. Have had a couple of these and this was as well made as any. pretty clean as received and not that much grit comes out during seasoning. Much appreciated.
