  • Watch real ants dig intricate tunnels: Know what s even cooler than a plain old ant habitat full of sand? One that s made with bright blue, space-age gel that glows! Watch your harvester ants dig intricate tunnels through the same type of gel that ants were sent to the moon in. Then, turn on the lights the whole ant habitat glows! It s not only crazy-cool to look at, but the lights can also encourage the ants to dig deeper into the gel.
  • Includes beautiful and extensive 16-page learning book: Ants are fascinating insects with super-duper strength, human-like ways of interacting, and oddball features (like the butt of an Australian green ant tastes sort of like a lime! Ew...). This Learning Guide is full of cool, scientific information about ants. NOTE: Due to regulatory restrictions ants cannot be shipped to Oregon or Hawaii.
  • A fun and educational gift for all ages: Its not often that a science project can be fun and engaging, but this set achieves both! Great set for individual play or as a group activity. • Kids loved it
We bought this as a compromise gift for my son who wanted a pet turtle 😂 The ants were easy to order and most arrived alive (though that's a completely unrelated purchase) so we started with close to 50 ants on August 16. We followed instructions and bored a few small holes and let the ants do the rest. the attached photo is Dec 12 when the last ant died. we did have to remove a good bit of the material the ants dug up as well as some of the dead bodies through the process, but overall a very easy process. I strongly warn against using the LED lights for very long. my son left them on overnight one day and the gel started to weep around the sides, ants were distressed and the overall colony was not thriving. we cleaned it up, aired them out and they were good as new. ... show more

  • Excellent product, would definitely buy again
We bought this for my son in October of 2020, along with a tube of ants. Five months later, the ants are still alive and happily digging -- we finally bought a second farm to transfer them into since their "gel" had gotten a little dry, but transferring them was relatively easy and the second farm is as high-quality as the first. Drop the ants in, close it up, and that's it. No maintenance, no upkeep, no work. The light is a nice feature, both to encourage the ants to dig and also as a nightlight for a kid. My son leaves his unplugged some nights and the ants don't seem to mind. Would highly recommend this product. We've enjoyed watching the ants build, we've had very few die (when you buy a plastic tube of ants through the mail, you have low expectations), and it lasted a surprisingly long time given the price. Great gift for a science-interested kid. ... show more

  • Be careful what you put in it
I purchased this as a birthday gift and it was a big hit. The light up base is a cool feature to illuminate the farm at night, though it’s pretty bright. It is important to note that this does not come with ants. I found that poking holes in the gel helped get the ants started on digging and made the progress much faster. For fun, the ants were fed various foods through the pluggable hole in the lid (crackers, dog food, sugar cubes). A strawberry was put in the farm and caused quite a bit of mold. I’d avoid putting anything hydrated in there. ... show more

  • LEDs went out within a week and all the ants do is die.
I thoroughly regret buying this ant farm. It seemed really nice when we got it, it seemed like it was high quality and the light is a nice touch. I ordered the ants and they started burrowing the first day they were in there so I thought we had a total success. Turns out they only borrowed for a day and a half, now they lounge around, lethargic and dying. The first death ended in cannibalism and ant parts scattered all over. Since then they've been going into their tunnels to die, indeed, that's all they do in the tunnels. It's like they were digging their own graves. We've only had the farm with ants for about a week and a half and now 1 of the 4 LEDs is out. Also, these lights get hot! I noticed how warm the lights were and measured the temp, it was 107* at the bottom! Tons of moisture has accumulated inside the farm, it's condensed on the upper portion and the medium looks soggy. I'm considering freezing the farm just to put the ants (and us) out of our misery. Just don't buy this, it's a disaster. ... show more

  • Due to blue gel difficult to see ants tunneling. :(
Disappointed that the blue gel makes it hard to see the ants tunneling. Otherwise, great product. Ants seem to be happy and working away :)

  • You need ants for this to work
Buying live ants makes it easier unless you have a ton of ants. I bought this cause I had ants, then it got cold before it arrived and then went away, mostly. I caught about 10, poked 3-4 holes as instructed, and they’ve mostly stayed clustered. Long story short, I bought one of these a few years ago and put a bunch of ants in. They burrowed and it was awesome. They eat the ones that don’t make it if you know what I’m saying. ... show more
