  • Pretty OK large capacity SSD drive for storage
Capacity: 2TB Style: SSD
I've been waiting for large-capacity SSDs to come down in price for a long time. I saw this 2TB for $60 on sale and figured I'd give it a try. I'm looking to replace my RAID of spinning disks in my my long-term home storage with a few SSDs. In theory, if you primarily read from them, SSDs should last an extremely long time - even QLC drives like this one. This should make them perfect for long term archival storage with few writes. and lots of reads. And since they shouldn't fail ever year or two like mechanical drives, they won't need to be in a RAID, which means I won't need to buy twice as much storage as I need either. I'm testing this one out as my media drive and using it to store my movie collection. - The drive isn't screaming fast like the more expensive drives. However, the read speed has been consistently "fast enough." - Writes are fast, until they're not. Once its internal cache fills up, the drive's write falls pretty fast. Sustained write performance can drop to 10 MB/s or less. This is a bit frustrating when I'm filling up a new archival drive - 1 TB all at once is likely the worst-case workload for write performance. But now that I've done that, I don't notice write problems much. I also think I'd probably notice less if I were writing smaller files. I've been using the drive for about 3 months now. While I wouldn't recommend this as the boot drive on a high end gaming system or developer workstation, I think it would be great in a game console, in a media server, for archival storage, or even as the boot drive in a typical home user's PC or laptop. Quibble: Two of the threaded screw holes for mounting the drive from below weren't machined correctly. The screws only go in about half as far as they should. My drive trays mount from below, and two of the screws didn't sit flush with the tray, which made the tray not fit in my drive enclosure. I left those screws out (not a big deal - two screws is plenty to hold this drive in place). ... show more

  • Mounting screw issues
This is my second Leven drive I have. The first is performing quite well. I just got the second one installed a week after I got it. I delayed hoping to find a proper 2.5" mount for the bay in my computer, but did so without luck. But this leads to the matter of the mounting holes on the bottom. I have a suitable collection of computer screws with which I secured the first Leven drive. However, when I attempted to mount the second drive with the same screws, I felt the screws binding. This is an indicator of a mis-matched threads. I pulled one of the screws from the first Leven drive and it didn't fit the bottom holes on the newer one. On a whim, I tried screwing it into one of the side mounting holes and it fit properly. Rather than try to return the drive for this defect -- after all, it does what it's supposed to -- I just forced the screws and all was reasonably well. But this points to poor quality control at Leven. ... show more

  • It's storage. Faster than a spinny drive.
Capacity: 4TB Style: SSD
Now I admit it is not at all common these days for a person to know how long it takes to load a computer game in with a cassette tape. Computers used to do that you know. I imagine that it would take longer to actually put through the punch cards, but only by a bit and not at all if you include the times the load failed in the middle because the tape jittered a bit when your little sister stormed through the room and pounded on the keyboard. But, then again this drive is way, way faster than both of those methods. (OH and way faster than typing in the source code by hand from a magazine. Phew!) So, 4 stars because it beats a modem too. ... show more

  • Brings new life to an old computer.
my spinning metal IDE drive was getting hot trying to run Windows and Office. I picked up one of these at a great price and figured I'd give it a shot. I installed Windows from my CD/DVD drive and it boots twice as fast now. I hope the product last and now I can donate this old PC and not worry about any personal info on my old harddrive getting into the wrong hands. I've bought several more in a larger size for this exact same purpose. ... show more

  • Solid SSD at a great price
I've used one of these for over a year and recently bought another to upgrade an old laptop. They work extremely well - I have no complaints. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that they don't ship with any filesystem partitioned. You'll have to do that yourself, which is easy enough to do (especially if you're installing a fresh OS on them). ... show more
