Top Amazon Reviews

  • This is a really good laptop for the price
Capacity: 14.0 in
I would like to start this review off by saying that I am no stranger to computers. I currently have several, including multiple desktops, Macbooks and other windows laptops. Recently I have found myself really intrigued with what AMD has been doing in the processor world, and figured this would be the best way to see what their mobile CPU is like. I originally planned at looking for a device to replace my surface 3 (Atom based unit). I currently have an iPad pro 9.7 that I use as a day to day tablet, but I wanted something that had the ability to run some windows programs. For me, it really came down to the ability to write code in a pinch. I spent some time looking around on the internet and trying to figure out if I wanted a tablet or a 2 in 1. Years ago I owned the first generation Lenovo Yoga. I absolutely did not like that laptop. The trackpad was poor, the performance was poor, and overall it was a sub par laptop. I would have been a lot less happy with it if I hadn't gotten it for free. I was looking at the surface go, but I couldn't pull the trigger on the price. Then, I stumbled on this and decided to go for it. I was not disappointed. Build Quality ---------------- This is a really tight laptop. It feels much nicer than a laptop at this price. The body doesn't squeak, and it has a nice soft touch to the plastics. It reminds me like a slightly cheaper feeling X1 (My laptop at work), but not that much cheaper. I was actually very surprised. I will say that the computer does have a tendency to pick up finger grease on the body and it starts to look dirty really quick, For me it wasn't really a big deal because I tend to clean my computers often, but I could see it being annoying for some. The hinge is strong and sturdy. It doesn't feel like it is going to break anytime soon. I also really appreciate the lack of wobble in the screen when you are typing (although it will wobble when touching the screen in view mode or laptop mode.) Screen -------- The screen is pretty good. I would say that for most it is more than enough. I would not look at using this screen to do any serious photo editing without some calibration, but for day to day use it is perfectly fine. The screen is on the dimmer side, but I have yet to have an issue when using the computer inside. I did however notice the lack of brightness in the screen when using the computer while sitting in my backyard, but it is serviceable for most things. There is some noticeable light bleed around the images, but it is really only noticeable when paired with a dark background. I also noticed that there isn't a nice solid glass Keyboard ----------- This keyboard is study and has great tactile feedback. There is very little flex and it is clear when you have pressed a key. The layout was great and took me little to no time to get used to. It is basically the same keyboard as the Thinkpad x1 keyboard when it comes to layout. It does feel a little less tactile when compared to the X1, but it is more than serviceable. I can say that I like this keyboard much more than my 15" Macbook pro with touchbar. Performance --------------- This one is pretty simple....It's great. I would like to point out that yes, the computer has 8gb of RAM, but in reality there is 6gb usable. Don't get me wrong, that is plenty for most things, but keep this in mind if you are regularly hitting that 8gb limit. However, that loss of 2gb is for good reason. Those 2gb are going to the Vega 8 graphics in the chip. Graphically, this computer performs great. I would put it in the 950m/mx150 territory, but without the additional power draw. I unfortunately do not have benchmarks, but this is just based on experience. I find playing games pretty nice on this computer, it isn't a gaming machine, but it is serviceable. Battery ---------- Battery has been better than expected. When I am browsing the web on power saver settings with 80% brightness, I am getting 6-7 hours. This is much higher than expected. If i crank up the brightness and performance, and maybe play some simple games, I am getting around 4.5 hours. This laptop is more than serviceable for battery life. Bonus Notes -------------- The first unit that I received had a damaged "B" key. The membrane felt to have been disconnected from the board and it caused a mushy feel to that key. Amazon sent me a replacement, and this one has been great. Writing on the screen with the active pen feels weird. It doesn't glide on the screen like other devices. If you are looking for a computer to do digital art on, I would look elsewhere. Using this as a tablet is a little uncomfortable, but it isn't impossible. I am a larger man, but I could see this being a little uncomfortable to use one handed by an average sized person. Final thoughts ----------------- If you are looking for a secondary computer, you should really consider this. It has a few drawbacks, but as a secondary device, you won't even notice most of them. If you're a student looking for a computer for college, I would consider something with better battery life, or maybe something smaller, but if you don't have much additional money to spend, I would buy this. This is a small computer, but it is pretty heavy. If you are looking for a primary device and you are an average computer user, this is a hard deal to beat. Lastly, if you are a professional and are looking for a primary laptop for some serious work, I would up my price point and look elsewhere. Something with a dedicated keyboard and a better screen. Feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions for me and I will do my best to answer them. Thanks for taking the time to read my review. ... show more

  • 1st Lenovo -- Overall a Slick STEAL!
Capacity: 14.0 in
Greetings, I've reliably been an Asus person in my few years of PCs. (I ditched 29 years of Apple because of Tim Cook destroying the company and Windows 10 proving to be the first acceptable OS out of MS.) I didn't skip Asus because of any quality issues. They make great stuff at great prices. I ditched because Asus sort of price fixes in America. That is you either have to buy a pricey high-end 13 inch Zenbook or an affordable 15 inch mid-range Vivobook for about the same price, but what you can't buy is 13 or 14 inch mid-range laptop. Those units are all over the planet but intentionally kept out of America to keep you up at a certain price one way or another. I mean, yeah, Asus offers some Pentium junk for nothing, but what I mean is a laptop more like this Lenovo Flex 14. So I'm not a gamer. In PC reviews it's really important to decide if you game enough to be a gamer AND if your reviewer does. Never mix and match. Just as you don't want a sports car enthusiast reviewing your Honda Civic, you don't want a gamer reviewing THIS Lenovo. It can game but it's not meant for gamer, 'nuff said. What I want from any laptop PC -- 1. A screen that doesn't make me miss Macs. I don't need a 4K screen to have the world's sharpest icons either. 1080p Full HD, 14 inch is nice, rich enough colors, bright enough, solid viewing angles. This Lenovo checks all the boxes. It's my kitchen streaming TV typically and so the glossy touchscreen makes it look like a TV as well. 2. 8Gbs of RAM. (This unit kinda doesn't do this. It has 8 but 2 are reserved for some reason (GPU?) and so it already feels a little tight. Since it's not my main PC and I'm (say it with me now) not a gamer, I'll be okay. But this setup lost half a star. In the real world it means you have to close apps you're not using and reboot a tad more frequently. 3. Ultrabookish. It's not as light or slim as MacBook Air, but then it's half the price with a slightly larger screen. So there's that. Also lots of ports is fine by me. It's rubberplasticwhatever exterior ain't metal but it doesn't feel cheap. It's a tad hefty but nothing embarrassing. 4. Style. This is the other half of that missing fifth star. Hmm. It doesn't have that cheap Best Buy look. There's nothing strange on it -- like the red nipple on its Thinkpad cousins. So while's there's nothing offensive about it any way... no one will ever say "What a nice looking PC!". Design wise it reminds of the monolith in 2001. (I'm a sucker for the affordable Asus Vivobook S15 in dark grey and red tri . That's a WOW visually, has the right amount of RAM, but the screen isn't as vivid as this one. As I write this I'm not sure that one is out of the running.) 5. Price. It's not that I'm cheap, but after decades of pricey Macs it's really fun to buy such affordable laptops with affordable extended warranties. There's no real comparable Mac to this, but it's similar enough to the 2019 MacBook Air that ships with 256 SSD. You can get two of these Lenovos for that one MacBook and still have enough money to buy EACH Lenovo a 3 year Square Trade warranty. It's NO CONTEST in pricing. Even when you try to find a PC with this level of spec -- it won't come with this price. Trust me, I've looked. By the by -- the 14 inch 1080p Asus Chromebook (a BEAUTY compared to this Lenovo) is the same exact price... but has half the RAM, half the functionality, and a quarter of the storage. That's why I say this Ideapead is a SLICK STEAL. UPDATES: 1. Battery is MEH if you want to be out and about with this all day. In your first week Windows will tell you it's a 3 hour battery at best, which is NOT true. It takes a while for Windows to read this as 5 hour-ish battery, which for my needs and this pricepoint is fine. 2. The weight is MEH too for the same reasons 3. Since I will virtually never use this as a tablet I attached two sticky furniture sliding pad thingees. (See pics.) This raises the back of the unit up a little more to allow a better typing angle and better airflow. Amazon sells little pieces of plastic that do the same thing. I get why this model can't have little feet like this normally (or it wouldn't fold around so well), but OEMs should design 'pop up' feet. Feet that pop up out of the laptop via springs. So that most of the time you'd have that lift but when in tablet mode you could click them way. 4. Warranty is weird. You have to register to 'get' your warranty to activate. But they won't tell you anywhere in writing what the time period of the warranty is. They'll 'relate' that information but under law this unit technically has no warranty since they won't put in writing how long it is. CONCLUSION -- If this was offered in colors with a better battery it would be crazy not to buy this. But this is so compelling a package I'm keeping it. If you got a student who needs a PC -- this is probably your choice. ... show more
