  • Doesn't Just Look Good
Size: Raw Brass Color: Marsala
I am pleasantly surprised! To preface this review, I have been playing sax for 28 years and make most of my money in the music industry. I have tried all kinds of gear, from expensive to entry level. My preferred ligatures are the Vandoren Optimum on alto, and the SAXXAS (Winslow clone) for tenor. I generally stay away from leather-wrapped ligatures like Rovners and such. I feel they muffle the sound and restrict the vibration of the reed, lending to a muffled and darker sound. However, this ligature made me reconsider my past experiences. To begin, I really like the esthetic of the burgundy-toned leather and the gold Dual-screws with nummerite-embedded ends. Along with the matching leather cap, the whole package just looks good. The screws function well, and the dual design helps ensure that the reed is fastened to the table of the mouthpiece securely and evenly. This is superior to single-screw methods used in other ligature designs and I appreciate this level of thought and detail. Included in the package are two different leather patches that attach to the inside of the ligature via hook-and-loop tape. These are what directly contact the reed. One is just pure leather and is soft/flexible. The other is similar, but has a thin, rigid piece of clear acrylic beneath it to increase its hardness. This was the plate that I used to play-test. Response was quick and snappy overall, and the reed sealed to the table with ease. Once the ligature was screwed down, it was also easy to adjust the mouthpiece on the cork without the ligature slipping or sliding on the mouthpiece. I did not experience the deadaning of tone/sound that I usually expect with this style of ligature. A very nice surprise. At $50, I can't think of a more esthetically pleasing ligature that also performs this well. I'm also interested in how the leather breaks in over time. A solid upgrade from a basic ligature, and also competes against other much more expensive options ... show more

  • Love the color
Size: Raw Brass Color: Marsala
While I love the concept, color, and materials, I think it might be a tad too big. It is way too big for my dukoff and my Meyer. I have an off brand MP that I really like and it's still just a tad too large for it. Being too large prevents one from really getting a good tight clamp on the reed. So, you could be playing and suddenly you find the reed has shifted and is no longer lined up with the rails and there goes your sound. The role of the ligature is to secure the reed to the MP as well as make a good seal. And I don't care what anybody says, I've been playing for almost 50 years and I have never heard a change in tonality when changing the material of a ligature, NEVER; one can change tonality by changing the embouchure or the airstream or the tongue position or reed stiffness. I prefer the old school Windslow because it really did a great job of securing the reed so that the part of the reed that was supposed to vibrate against the rails was the only part that vibrated. I don't know what type of alto sax MP this lig would actually fit. It's also too big for my tenor MPs except this one off-brand MP. You also don't need dual screws to ensure this tightens evenly. Now, since it's already too large and since leather will stretch there are a very limited number of mouthpieces that this would actually work on. Maybe they should make two sizes for alto i.e., one smaller and this one. And maybe indicate what mouthpieces this lig would actually fit. But I guess to do that one would have to know the definition of size and know that "Raw Brass" is not a size (i.e., the product description states that this ligature's size is Raw Brass). I would have to recommend against buying this ligature since it's not really made with any real accuracy and not made for any particular alto sax mouthpiece. The leather will stretch overtime and cause this to become unusable especially if it's already just a tad too big. ... show more

  • it's interesting
Size: Raw Brass Color: Brown
So with a saxophone, there's not many accessories that you can get for it. When I saw this, I figured, why not? It works fine when holding my reeds, it's just different from the standard two-dollar holders. It does look pretty sweet though, but a little bulky. I like it and am going to keep it on one of my saxophones. That makes one of two accessories that I have, the second being a screw with a fancy stone on top. So boring being a saxist? saxophonist? ... show more

  • Items works, well made, but cumbersome, limited adjustment
Size: Raw Brass Color: Brown
I have been playing saxophone for over 40 years. I reviewed this from curiosity. The item is well made and does work and sounds fine (somewhat bright), but it is to use. Leather is inherently flexible and does not retain its shape. I am concerned about when it becomes wet during use and cleaning the mouthpiece. The ligature adjustment knobs are large and easy to use, but they easily fall off in adjustment. Also, the ligature tightened ALL THE WAY to the point where no further tightening is possible. (see photos of ligature with TWO adjustment knobs) This is not a good sign. If a thinner reed is used, there is no way to tighten the ligature properly. I used this on a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece and a Selmer C* mouthpiece and a top-of-the-line Yamaha alto sax. It played well, no doubt about that. My concern is the leather material that is used in its construction. The leather is bulkier than similar ligatures available. The cap is initially misshapen and must be bent to fit. It also has a ring of grey foam inside the cap to help the cap fit, but this would come loose or fray over time. (see photos) I suppose this may be OK for some users, but for a serious player that wants the ligature and cap to "just fit" without adjustment or monkeying around, this is not a good "fit." I took some photos of a similar ligature product (with one adjustment knob) which I use. Note that there is plenty of additional adjustment room for thinner reeds, etc. Also, the cap of this other product fits securely with plenty of room for the ligature on the mouthpiece. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this product. Again, this is personal preference. The brown leather is aesthetically pleasing, but for the function of the ligature and cap, it comes short of what a player would normally want. ... show more
