  • This support totally worked to fix my sagging door!
My 80's garage door was sagging really badly when fully opened. I chose this product because it was the cheapest at the time (had a $20 off discount). I thought I would need two of them, but decided to try one first, then pick up another if needed. I attached the bar myself to the lower section. As mentioned, there are no instructions, but it's easy to figure out. The product comes with four 4' pieces, and three 2' pieces. The shorter pieces fit under the 4' sections to bridge them together, creating a long 16' piece when fully assembled/installed. It comes with two bags of self-tapping screws, with one being slightly longer than the other. I used all of the long ones and just a few of the shorter ones because I ran out of the longer ones. Unlike the other review, I did not use the short screws to secure the pieces together; I only used the long screws to screw into the door panel itself, through the bar. You will need a drill and a suitable bit (I used a 4mm bit). I don't think it would be possible to manually screw through the bar and door without one. Then, decide where you want to place the bar. I chose the area just under the existing brackets, and used the brackets to align the bar. I first connected two of the 4' sections together with a connecting piece centered underneath. I then held this section so one end was at the end of the door, and with some difficulty I drilled through the center section of the bar, making two holes on each side of the pieces, and also underneath. I then used my drill-driver and a 11mm socket to screw the provided screws through the holes in the bar and into the door panel. Once you get one piece up it's a lot easier: you can then connect another connecting section underneath the end, and add a 4' bar section on top, and just continue down to the end of the door. Once the bar was in position, I then drilled more holes at the halfway point between the initial set of bolts, adding some additional screw points in areas where I thought the bar needed additional support. When I was done I was happy to see that the sag was fixed and the door now opens and closes normally again! Note: The bar does add a good amount of weight to the door. My garage ceiling is very low, so I don't have an opener and manually open the door as needed (which is not often). I can feel the extra weight of the door, and if I needed to open the door more often I would probably have someone come out and adjust the spring (I might even need a new one if it didn't have the right lift capacity). You will likely run into the same issue even with an automatic opener, and may need to have a garage tech come out and adjust the spring tension or replace the spring if necessary. Overall very happy with this solution! ... show more

  • It's installed, but it wasn't very easy.
I'm thankful that this product was available. I needed a 16 foot brace and could not find one near me, nor could I find one that could be delivered. I bought two of the 4-piece (with three reinforcements) model. What you should know. The steel is good hard thick steel. The self tapping screws really weren't up to the task. I drained a whole 19.4V Craftsman cordless drill battery on roughly 9 screws. Pre-drilling is better, and a good old-fashioned corded drill got the job done. It's also hard to install alone. I ended up hanging two assembles halves, and then connecting them to the center reinforcement in place. I hung the pieces with short lengths of wire while I attached them. There were no instructions, nor was the video on Amazon much help. It's not rocket science, but it would have been nice to know which of the two screw sizes were intended for assembly, vs. attaching to the garage door. I used the small screw for assembly, and the long ones to attach it to the door. I didn't worry about putting the screws in with uniform spacing. I just made sure that I had some near the ends of each long pieces, and at both ends of the short, reinforcing pieces. I saw in one of the photos that they left a gap between the two ends allowing you to fasten the reinforcement piece to the door, and then attach the long pieces to the attached reinforcement piece. My garage is a standard 16-foot wide door, and the four long pieces butted up against each other, were about 1/4 inch longer than my door is wide. Drilled through both layers to attach it to the door. Sharper self-tapping screws would be an improvement, as would some pre-drilled holes to use for assembly, would have made this a lot easier. In the end, the door is now well-supported and should last another 15 years. ... show more
