  • A Good Drive, But Not Great
I have used this drive as an external drive for photo editing in Lightroom. It is a great drive, but is not nearly as fast as indicated in the description when you are moving thousands of small files around. Pros: - Great capacity to price ratio - As a backup drive, it is really fast for a spinning disk - It really will survive a waist high drop Cons: - Really slow in Lightroom - even with USB-C If this review was helpful to you, please click the "yes" button below - it helps Amazon (and those of us who write reviews) know if the information provided is of value to others. ... show more

  • Faulty custome reviews, obviously bought.
Bought this drive with the reputation of LaCie (having 3 more such drive with Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3.0. Never had issues until I bought this specimen. Not only it is not recognized by a regular OS drive utilities, but it actually asks you to use their "Seagate, obviously not LaCie" utility. Horrible experience. Never buy this drive. Being using LaCie on Mac, Linux and Windows with the OLD LaCie -- never had a problem. Seagate screwed up the copmany's best lines of products. But them what is new. This one is not recognized as a 5TB size by anything -- neither Mac, Linux nor Windows. What kind of fresh hell is this? Seagate? What the hell product did you come up with, dear Seagate? Is it an apple, pear, orange or simply a flop? Why? It is not enoigh the Google owns you guys, you just have to give in to your precious data storage too -- Seagate. Once exemplary, now the bottom of the hole. Will NEVER BUY LaCie after Seagate flop miracle!!! Suggest DO NOT BUY to anyone who respects themselves as specialist in the field or simply advanced consumer. APPARENTLY SEAGATE CAN BUY 6 GOOD REVIEWS, BUT CAN YOU TRUST THESE AT ALL? NO RESPECT FOR SUCH COMPANY FROM ME! With disrespect Very disappointed customer!!! ... show more

  • BE ADVISED...TRANSFER SPEEDS ARE MUCH SLOWER THAN STATED!
Capacity: 5TB Style: Thunderbolt +USB-C
They state, "Thunderbolt speeds up to 510MB/s with SSD (HDD up to 130MB/s)". This was not true for me! I own about 20 external drives, so I am quite familiar with what to expect. This drive is among the slowest I have encountered. I have a 6 year old USB 1 drive that speedier than this drive. Using a MacBook Pro 2018 with Thunderbolt 3 USB 3.1 connections, this drive transfers data at the rate of about 25 MB per second, not the 510 MB stated on the product. I am less than impressed at these speeds. For example, I am transferring 2 TB of data right now, and it will take about 24 hours to complete the process. If you do the math, it is about 25MB per second...a far cry from their advertised speeds. Even at 130MB per second, the minimum of what they state, this job would take 4 hours, not 24 hours. The other annoying thing about this drive is that it states that it is USB 3.0 compatible but it is not Thunderbolt 3. They do provide all of the cabling you will need to connect to most any computer, but there is a pre-installed cable that wraps around the drive and tucks in at the end. If you own a computer that uses this connection, then you are good as gold. But if your computer doesn't have this connection, then you are stuck with the cable wrapped around the drive that you will never use. It's annoying and it is in the way and it cannot be removed. While I agree with the idea of what Lacie is trying to do, it only serves those people who own computers that use that specific cable connection. If you don't have a computer with that connector, then it's a useless appendage and an annoyance. I would expect to see better performance and product from a company like Lacie. I own many of their older drives, so I thought to give them another shot, but sadly disappointed. And lastly, I paid a premium of about 80% more for this drive over a similar drive, just so that I could take advantage of the USB Thunderbolt speeds, only to find the speed to be about 5% or at best 10% of the stated transfer speeds. One final point of fact, I took a 335 GB group of files and simply duplicated them on the drive itself....meaning that the information was not transferred from one device to another device...they were just copied on the same drive itself. That task took more than 4 hours. If you do the math, you will find that the transfer (duplication) speed was 23.3 MB per second! ... show more

  • Product says “water resistant” that wasn’t the case in my experience...
Capacity: 2TB Style: Thunderbolt +USB-C
Purchased on Nov 18th 2017. I’m a DJ and was at an outside gig when the weather took a turn and got rained out. The ext drive suffered some water damage. I was reading about the 3 yr limited warranty and product which states it’s “water resistant” well apparently not cause now when i plug in the drive it just makes a beeping sound it’s not clicking which could be worse. I packed up the equipment as quickly as possible so I didn’t think the rain affected it that much but it doesn’t even boot up on my laptop anymore. So much for being “water resistant” ... show more

  • Just realized they sent me a "broken" 4TB Drive
I've had this drive since the end of July 2018, it runs fine, that is not the issue. My issue is.. I'm working on making backups with all of my external HD's, and I was looking at the info on this Lacie for a minute with confusion... I bought this 4TB Lacie, and I have one folder as of now on it that's 1.12 TB. That is the only folder I have on the entire drive. While the drive states that it's maximum memory storage is the 4TB, it states I have only 977.93 GB left, and that I used 3.02 TB of storage.. which is impossible because I only have the one 1.12TB folder in it... I wish I would've noticed this sooner so I could've returned it for a real one... If you buy this.. don't, or at least drag some folder onto it ASAP, see if the memory taken up on the Lacie matches how much was in the folder.. ... show more
