Reading some of the reviews, I was a bit apprehensive about ordering this advent calendar; however, I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived! It was intact, no scratches and no defects. One thing that was not exactly clear to me was that the entire back is magnetic, so you can stick the figures anywhere you want. I ordered this for my not quite 2 year old. When I showed it to him, I wanted him to just open the first 9 boxes as it was December 9, but of course, my toddler wanted to open all the boxes. This actually was good as it allowed me to be certain that all 24 pieces were intact and without defects. They were! It's a very cute set, very entertaining for him, it's quite sturdy, and also provides a way to introduce the Nativity to little ones. He's been opening all the boxes, taking pieces out and putting them back in, and placing them on the magnetic back. Bottom line: this is a high quality advent calendar and so far it's survived my 23 month old boy, who is not particularly gentle, so I'm happy! ... show more

The "Kurt Adler Wooden Nativity Advent Calendar with 24 Magnetic Figures" is a charming way to count down the days of Advent. From the folk art appearance of the individual characters and animals to the alternating navy blue and sienna gold-numbered doors on the compartments that hold each individual piece, this Advent calendar will enliven and add to your Christmas décor. The compartments border the Nativity background on which you position the individual magnetic pieces. Centered on the scene is the stable where Christ was born; a grassy area fills most of the lower portion of the background. The display area is about 10 ¼" X 12 ¾" and does become somewhat crowded when all 24 figures are placed on it. It would have been easier to place figures if the display area had been slightly larger. The approximately 1 ½" deep frame of the "Kurt Adler Wooden Nativity Advent Calendar with 24 Magnetic Figures" creates a stable enough base that you can display it on a table or shelf. The "Kurt Adler Wooden Nativity Advent Calendar with 24 Magnetic Figures" is finished nicely. Paint is evenly applied and there are no drips or bubbles marring the smooth surface. We really like this advent calendar. It is exactly what I was looking for - a well-made, wooden calendar that depicted what Christmas was all about. As other reviews indicate, the individual pieces do appear to be hand painted and are really lovely. The pieces fit well into the numbered slots. You can even fit a piece of chocolate in with the pieces if desired. The reason for the four stars is the scene tends to get a little crowded as each day passes making the end result a bit busy. However, my daughter enjoyed putting the pieces on the scene. We look forward to many years with this calendar and would very much recommend it to others. ... show more

    • One little problem...
Yes this Advent calendar is beautiful, and the kids enjoy it and actually think about the real meaning of Christmas. But there is a little problem with it, well actually two. First off the figures, though very nice are a bit too large for the space, we are on day 13 and it is filled with the barn animals, there is very little space left. I think they could have avoided this if the animals were a tad smaller, some of them are going to be relegated to either the table or floating in the sky, in order to fit the Three Kings and the Holy Family. The next little problem is that the figures fit in certain cubbys, the only problem here is that we wanted the last three days to be Joseph, Mary and of course finally the baby Jesus, but Joseph doesn't fit in these spots and he will have to appear on day 18. Now if you notice I still give the calendar 5 stars because it IS beautiful, the colors, the figures, are all well made in terms of how they are drawn and colored, and the calendar itself is very well made also. And most importantly the girls really love it and are getting a kick opening and decorating the scene. So my little problems with it are overshadowed by how great the calendar is as a whole. I just thought I'd mention those aspects that we as adults might see, mind you our girls really don't mind. For all of you thinking of buying this you definitely should, very good construction. Definitely will last many,many years. ... show more

    • Falsely advertised pictures. Pieces are way larger.
I have been wanting this set for years! This year I finally did it and was SO disappointed when it arrived. The pieces in the advertised picture look small, carved, and well painted. What I got were very large flat pieces that are way too big and not well painted. They don’t even all fit on the board! I had to put animals in the sky or leave them off.... This was very sad for me, but the doors pushed me over the edge. They all open down and make it really awkward to get the pieces out. Not to mention most of the pieces are so large they don’t fit well. It just wasn’t worth the high price that was paid. And if the seller is going to advertise such small intricate pieces on the board as pictured in the listing then that’s what they should be sending. Not what I got. Will be returning. ... show more
