  • Better than expected, excellent quality easier than I thought to install
Size: 12,000 BTU 115V
I was originally looking at the Mr. Cool brand for DIY mini splits to cool off my newly renovated bungalow, but I am glad I picked the Klimaire version. I opted for the 115 V 12,000 BTU option since I was cooling a smaller area and I am more comfortable working with 115 V lines. Initially I was worried about the lack of Youtube installation videos for Klimaire compared to Mr. Cool. I found that the instructions were fairly straight forward if you have a strong DIY skill set and experience. I also found the steps for installation were basically the same as the Mr. Cool mini split, so if you are unsure if you have the skills to install this mini split watch those videos. I found the hardest part of the install was running the new electrical lines for the new AC disconnect, the actual install of unit was fairly straight forward. Be mindful of the weight of the outside unit, it is sixty lbs for the 115 V unit, so have a solid plan if you need to install off a ladder. The only quality issue I ran into was with the stamping quality of the fan shied for the outdoor unit. It looked like it was not properly released from the die when stamped, or bent when assembled. Regardless the fan blade hit this bent point in the shielding and stopped spinning when I initially started it up. Fortunately, I caught this quickly and was able to remove the grate and bend the metal into roughly the right position with a set of pliers and the fand spun without hitting anything. The cooling quality was much better than expected, I ran a stress test after install and was able to bring my 500 sq ft bungalow down from 79 F to 68 F in 2 hours with no issue. I tried out the heating function, but it is too hot to truly test out the function. The remote is confusing, with buttons like "Turbo" that does not change the cooling level, just turns the fan on high, and the "Mute" button turns the fan on low but does not turn off the beeps whenever the buttons are pressed. I think this stems from poor translations into English for the remote. The App is surprisingly much better and I would just use that. The translations in app seem to be easier to understand with illustrations and the programming was easy. Overall I am very happy I went with the Klimaire unit over the Mr. Cool as I saved ~$500 for exactly what I needed and the installation was easier than expected. ... show more

  • Difficult by yourself to install but..
Size: 18K BTU_208/230V 19 SEER
It is very easy to install although would have been easier if I had an extra set of hands. However, thusfar, it is in and working as it should. I would say a good value and a good DIY system.

  • Update: Unit Lasted 1 Cooling Season Only
Size: 12,000 BTU 115V
The media could not be loaded. Update: May 2023 - After doing great for a single summer, this summer rolled around and this unit is only blowing room temp air. Had and HVAC tech come out and inspect the unit and the tech verified that all of the components were operating properly, but wasn't a fan of the brand and essentially told me "You got what you paid for". He said I could pay $300 - $400 to have the unit evacuated and recharged, but couldn't guarantee that would fix anything. He believed the precharged linesets could've been contaminated with non-condensables or moisture and that over time that is what's compromised the unit. Very disappointed. Original Review: So far this unit works great for its intended purpose of cooling a westward facing Florida 2 car garage. It has not been tested in the heat of FL summer yet, will look to update this review after I have some feedback on summer performance. The only complaints I have so far: the unit arrived with bent fins on the coil of the exterioor unit(see pictures) and some missing screws (missing a screw for thr electrical cover). When I reached out through Amazon there was no response to these issues. The instructions were not always easy to follow, especially with respect to electrical requirements, but good enough to get the job done. Operation since completing installation has been excellent. The app has been easy to use to control the unit, and the performance of the unit has been great. ... show more

  • Almost too cold!! But I love it!!!
Size: 18K BTU_208/230V 19 SEER
The Klimaire 18K DIY keeps my 700 square foot cabin very cool. It's so much quieter that the portable A/Cs that I've been using. When the temperature outside is 90 degrees, I set the mini split to 78 degrees inside but all of my thermometers inside read at 71-72. So this unit is really efficient. I've tried the heat a couple of nights when the temperature outside was in the 40's. It only took about 15 minutes to heat my place from 64 to 74 degrees . As for the DIY aspect, I had no experience. I probably watched at least 40-50 videos on youtube before buying and installing this unit. Most of the videos were extremely helpful. Some say it took them 2 hours to install. Some said it took 4-6 hours to install with a buddy. It took me a lot longer since I ended up have to replace my electrical sub panel. My old panel didn't have room for a double pole breaker. I could find an electrician to install a new panel. I called several local electricians and a few further out. Most of my calls went un-returned and the ones who called me back said they were booked 2-3 months out. So after watching more Youtube videos I ended up installing the new sub panel myself. When it came time to install the A/C unit, I was on my own again. The manual was very thin on details. Fortunately, I had watched all of those videos. By myself it probably took 5-6 hours to complete. It felt a lot longer mainly because of getting the lines from the unit through the hole in the wall to the main unit. It would have been easier with someone to help on that part of the install. When it was finally time to power on the unit, I was really nervous because of doing all of this myself with no experience. Well I flipped the breaker and used the remote to power the unit up... Nothing happened. Complete silence. I was sad, frustrated, mad and a whole bunch of other emotions. When I calmed down and took a minute to think, I remembered I forgot to flip the the fuse bar on the disconnect box that I installed. Sure enough, I totally forgot. So I flipped the bar and ran inside to power on the unit. I hit the power button and the unit turned right on. I went outside and checked the outside unit, but the fan wasn't turning. So I started to freak out again. But after a few minutes the outside unit fan started spinning. I checked the manual and online. Apparently it take a few minutes for the outside unit and inside unit to pass info between them. At the end of this very frustrating yet informative DIY I am a very happy I bought this unit. I can watch tv without turning the volume all the way up. I'm comfortable/cool all day and I fall asleep faster now without the loud and very annoying portable unit I had been using. ... show more
