This is hard to fill, much of the butane gets wasted. Lasted a few short days, two cans of butane. Will not be using this product again, will find something else. Edit: I changed my stars to 5 from 2. The seller saw my review and contacted me to offer a replacement or refund. I chose a refund which I got the same day and was not required to return the torch. Then I bought another torch and with the instructions on that one, it said to take a pen and expel the air in the torch before filling. So I did and that worked just fine, so I tried it on this Jo Chef torch and I heard the air expel from the container, and then it worked. I could fill it and use it just fine and I LOVE it! I contacted the seller to ask them to reverse my refund but they wouldn't do it and said customer service is very important to them. I feel somewhat bad for this but they insisted I keep the product, which I am now using. So now I have two torches and I use them both and I'm a happy camper and wanted everyone to know how awesome this company is in customer service and being just plain old nice people. ... show more

    • It Works and Does Not Leak - Yippee

The torch works reliably, however there are a few issues I have. 1) The gas knob has no safety lock, so it can be releasing butane if it is moved out of the off position accidentally. That is unlikely to happen under normal usage, but it is still a possibility. 2) The directions could be clearer. To fill, the plastic base must be removed. It has a tiny hole in it that is too small for the butane nozzle to properly fit, so that is very misleading. The base comes off and goes right back on very easily though. 3) There was no silicone mat included as was advertised. Same for any reference to a downloadable recipe book. Nothing I would really care about anyway, but the product description should be updated. 4) I have no clue how/if the fuel gage works. Again, directions are quite unclear. The control range on the flame is fairly limited but you can get the flame down around 50% without going out. I returned another brand torch because it would dump butane during use when you tipped it (like to flame crème brûlée). This does not have that problem. Sure, watching a fireball flareup can be fun, but not when it's scorching your dessert. So this torch is a keeper as it does not have this safety issue. So, don't let my negative comments deter you from buying it. It is, overall, safe and it performs as expected. ... show more

It's easy to use and perfect for browning toppings on food. I bought it for the Creme Brulee I make. It will also come in handy for browning meats. One problem I have with it is filling the butane. It would not fill to max fill line. the butane spewed out of the canister wasting fuel.

I initially was going to give this a bad review because I couldn’t get the torch to to fill with fuel…but after watching a video sent to me by the seller after I told of the problem, the video showed to remove the stand bottom to reveal a larger fill hole (stand bottom has a small hole but does not let fuel go into torch) so after watching the video, I had just enough fuel left to put in the torch and test it and it works fine. I’ve only used for searing steaks (in conjunction with pan searing… meaning searing top and bottom at same time). I’ve only ever used this torch, so I don’t have anything to compare to. However, steaks were excellent, and no butane taste, and nobody got burned. You really NEED to read on, off and locking instructions VERY carefully and practice a bit to get proficient… if you didn’t this could be bad. ... show more

    • Easy to ignite and use, but fill valve seems to leak during filling.

Overall I am happy with the Jo Chef Butane Torch. It is easy to use, and it works as expected. The only issues I ran into are the fill valve leaks during filling, and after the torch is about half full, it won’t take anymore, it just seems to leak out of the fill valve after the torch is half full.
