  • Use distilled water only
Pros, it works well at making real pebble ice. Keeps hands out of water/ice systems. Will make ice pretty quickly. Pretty easy to use. Cons, it doesn't hold very much water so you'll have to refill it 2 to 3 times as much as some of the other brands out there. We use a fair amount of ice. We can get 2, large glasses about 1/2 full of ice at a time before having to wait for it to make more. My previous unit fit in the same space and made easily 5 times as much ice. Unfortunately they recently stopped making that one... You can't just use normal bottle water as most have added back minerals for flavor and healthy reasons and it doesn't work well with it. You will have to use distilled water if you don't want any cleaning issues or sensor problems. The initial setup cleaning process is not enough. I followed the instructions and it grew algae in it in 4 days or so... you're better off doing the deep clean with bleach first or something similar to disinfect the whole thing first. I found a good one that uses proxide instead of bleach. I did this since bleach is a corrosive and can damage seals and that kind of thing. It's big and doesn't fit under the cabinets. I'm thinking about putting it on a stand to save counter space. It is loud, this is my 5th counter top ice maker and it is by far the loudest of them all. Would I buy it again??... well not really... I've had better one's that hold and make more ice. This is pretty difficult to clean. Moreover, it's pretty big and doesn't fit in the kitchen well. ... show more

  • Lots of ice, easy to use, good so far!
Leaving this review at 9 months of daily heavy usage. I will update it if I have any issues in the future. Great machine, works as intended, low maintenance, reliable ice output of almost exactly the restaurant quality that you're looking for. Reading other reviews here, I had expected the ice output to be very minimal, or for it to potentially make a loud squeaking noise. There were also warnings about not using tap water. I use our tap water filtered (well water that has a small amount of sediment/minerals even) and have had no issues. Its storage is enough to hold about 1.5, maybe 2 pints of ice, which is enough for 2 people who like large cups of ice, or 4-6 people wanting a small-moderate amount of ice at once. It also re-fills rather quickly, perhaps 1-3 hours. With 2 ice-lovers in our household, I've never had an issue with not enough ice. I've never needed to run it through a cleaning cycle, it seems to do that automatically? Its compressor makes noise (and water pump a bit less noise than that, when it runs), but it's a deep background hum that's not any annoyance. Maybe about 1.5x as loud as our modern refrigerator. The only thing that I don't like is that the buttons are pressure-buttons, which is much better than capacitive touch buttons, but I would have prefered robust physical switch buttons. The only (very minor) issues are: (1) There's a very small amount of ice/water leakage sometimes, particularly noticeable if you don't empty the drip tray at least once a month. (2) Rarely, maybe once every 2-3 weeks, ice will coagulate together, and it takes a bit more time than usual for the feeder to break it apart and serve it. (3) Since it seems the cleaning cycle runs automatically, maybe once a month or so, I'll try to get ice and it will be empty, and I'll need to wait an hour. Though I'm glad it runs automatically. ... show more

  • It's LOUD (but aren't they all)
Update 4/25/23: You could gain some insight by reading my review or you could just read this part-IT'S OFFICIALLY DEAD! Started making a loud ticking noise about a week ago and production dropped but was still enough. Now its shot. My advice (and thank god I followed it)-buy the extended warranty. It took me less time to file a claim for reimbursement than it took trying to disinfect and descale the machine. Original review: I returned an Opal 2.0 to a big box store when I received this unit and I have been asking myself why (outside of the $100 savings) ever since. If you don't want to read through the review, skip to the conclusions. So let's start with the PROs first. PRO: It does a very good job of doing what it is supposed to do-make ice. And unlike the Opal, it doesn't melt nearly as quickly. Additionally, the dispense feature is a keeper. Perhaps the only thing keeping me from returning the item and getting another Opal. There is something about having to scoop out ice every time you want to fill a cup. With the KB, set the cup down and push the button. Just like a commercial unit. Now the CONS: As stated, it is loud. I did a loudness test with a dB meter and found it ranged from 48 to a peak of 50 dB at one point(approx. 1 meter from unit). Unfortunately I did not do the same on the Opal so I'm not certain but, subjectively, the Opal is a bit quieter (not much). Fortunately, the noise seems to be primarily from the compressor running and the fact that apparently someone forgot to insulate the side panels as they sometimes rattle with the compressor running. If it lives beyond it's warranty period, I'll break it down and add a sound deadener. Until then, it's going to be moved to the laundry room so I don't have to crank the kitchen TV up to "11" to overcome it's operation. CON: It's really heavy-not that it's really a bad thing, but if you're buying one for grandma, make sure everyone agrees about where it's going. CON: Perhaps the biggest problem outside of the noise is placement. The left side of the machine needs 12 inches of clearance! Geez! That's enough room to drive a 4 slice toaster through. That may or may not be an issue for you but it's not as sharp looking as the Opal so it's not like you really want to display it (unless you are into the industrial look). In my case, I wanted to put it to the right of the fridge but with that 12 inch gap, it looks out of place. Yet another reason it's going to the laundry room. CON: Final one, I promise. Refilling the water is about the silliest setup I have ever seen. It'll grow on you after a while but boy, is it awkward. It's a shame they can't figure out an easier way like the Opal side tank does. Ideally an auto refill from a water line would be nice but it takes ONLY distilled water (is that another CON?). The icemaker comes with an oval shaped funnel and tube that allows filling without taking the cover off-although I still do so I can monitor the water level. There is a self detect feature that tells you when you've added enough water but it doesn't sound until it's right at the top of the fill level. In conclusion (thanks for sticking with me here)-am I thrilled with my purchase? Not exactly. I've had daily arguments with myself about returning it, but knowing a bit about the competition has enlightened me enough to know they all have some kind of issue. Read ALL of the reviews on all of the available options-not just the 5 star reviews which are so conveniently placed at the top. Click on those one star reviews also. You will soon see that just about all of those are not just complainers-they've had some really bad products-ALL makes and models and especially the Opal which is perhaps the nicest, most thought out unit for sale right now in consumer machines. As a matter of fact, my thanks to all of those writers of one star reviews on the Opal. The sheer number of negatives made me return the unit to the store. I requested an extended warranty be included at a reduced price and they balked so back it went-poor business model Big Box store! Rather lose a sale than bust $40 on an extended warranty. Good luck and I hope this review helps guide your purchase. BTW-it's ALMOST like Sonic ice, just a bit harder. ... show more
