I have 5 of these. I recently bought one on a flash sale for under $20 and replaced a 15 yr old reel that was starting to show some age. I was VERY impressed with the quality and smoothness of the reel for the price. I ended up buying 4 more and replacing all my kids and wife's reels with these. If there was one drawback it would be that it seems like 2 out of the 5 have major issues with backlash and birds nests. Not sure why. I use the same line on all of them and we all basically use the same lures/bait. Just seems like 2 of them experience more line twist and things than the other two. And one last thing. Try not to get them wet. I don't think the inside is greased or sealed as good as others. My daughter dropped hers in the river and 2 days later the bearings show signs of rust and the reel started feeling like there was sand it in when reeling. The good news is I told the company about it and they sent me another one as a courtesy. ... show more

I typically fish 5-6 times a week for at least an hour a day in the summer so I put a lot of wear on my equipment. I consider a product good if I can get 2 season out of it with little to no maintenance. I hate to spend top dollar on rods and reels because I really am not gentle on them. They get thrown into my trunk, dropped in the water and what not. So far I have fished probably 20 hours with these reels and no issues. Right price and right quality as far as I am concerned. I will up date if I have any issues in the future. So now I have had a few seasons with them. For the price you can not beat them. Again I am not easy on my equipment and since I bought my boat I now fish probably 25 hours per week in the summer so these get used and used a lot. I typically get 2 or more seasons per reel which for the price is fully worth it. Now I just need to find a rod that will do the same. I usually only get a half of season out of a rod before they snap. UPDATE 4/22/19 5 star to 3 star: Now that I have landed a few fish with these reels I am not as impressed as I once was. I bought two reels and the one is still working fantastic. The other one I ended up catching like a 6-7lbs large mouth bass and it spooled it pretty good. I am pretty sure I flat spotted one or more of the bearing in the reel. I could understand if I had caught several large fish or a big muskie it doing this but after one large fish this is unacceptable. There is NO WAY I will be getting two seasons out of this reel. I didn't even get the 1st month. ******update*******2/27/23 So I will give these a solid 4 stars. If you don't want to spend $50 plus per reel these are great. I have 4 of them in my arsenal. 3 of them I leave on my boat and 1 I keep with me in the truck. For the abuse I put my equipment thru and the amount of hours I fish I can't see anything this price being better. For the average fisher this thing is going to last you a decade if not longer. I do more fishing in a month, during the summer, than most people fish all year. ... show more

With 12lb braid this reel casts and reels very well with no binding. A month in, this reel really couldn't be better, and I consider it an excellent value. I've caught many bass on it. It doesn't twist the line in regular use which I appreciate. I flip the bail manually each cast, and watch for line not laying as it should. It's almost trouble free and I'd buy it again. Update: after a 3 months this reel continues to perform well. The bail doesn't twist the line. Few wind knots but I flip the bail manually and watch for loops like a hawk. I bought a 4000 (black, not "Lite") and it was too big and heavy, so I returned it and bought another 3000 (black, not "Lite") which is a good size for shaky head, wacky worm, t-rig etc. I have several baitcasters and spinning reels and have fished since the 1970s. For several years I've been watching KastKing grow and believe they started selling on e Bay long ago. Watching this company grow, however, I was uncertain of the quality compared to some of the more familiar manufacturers, for instance, Penn Reels which I will use as a comparison in my review. Immediately opening the box and holding the reel in my hand this was a winner. Pro: * The 5000 has some good weight and make sure you acquire the proper rod to offset and balance. This 5000 is a great snapper reel! * It has a nice pushbutton break on the knob allowing for appropriate storage. * Very smooth spinning action right out of the box. * Easy forward and reverse switch accessible on the front base of the reel. * The drag is also very stable and smooth, and not wobbly like some other poorly made reels. * Overall well constructed and likely why the few extra ounces in weight. * $30 is a steal compared to the more expensive brands and you are getting equal or better quality with this KastKing. Recommended Improvements: * The reel felt a little heavier compared to comparable Penn model, but again you get quality and a great price with this reel. * Improve the timing or closure of an open bail. I opened the bail and started to spin the handle expecting the bail to close easily. It was not easy and took a more force that I am accustomed to however it might just require some break-in time. Regardless if you are looking for a reliable and affordable inshore reel or off-shore you can't go wrong. I'm proud to add this 5000 and soon a 3000 KastKing to my collection. ... show more

Came back to add comments four yrs later. Great reel. Still works great. I like this better than Megatron for twice the price. I'm not sure why I'd buy a reel over 100 when this is so cheap. I fish lake St Clair, Erie and Cumberland for bass. Love it.
