I now have 4 Kàstking reels. I really like them. They're smooth, easy to use, and lightweight. I believe the body of the reel is made of 'aluminized' plastic or something like that. Bought this on a whim to get over the threshold for free shipping. Figured if nothing else it might be a decent reel for my son to learn on. The good: Low cost, good mag brakes. Cheap mag brakes tend to be on the ineffective side, but these actually work quite well. Reel is smooth out of the box, but that may or may not last. The bad: for that low cost, you definitely get a cheap reel. There are tiny gaps around the edges of the frame and side plates - nothing serious or that might impact the reel's usability, but the tolerances are definitely those of a budget reel. There's a noticeable whirring noise on cast and retrieve that seems to be coming from the spool. Again, no actual issues yet, but if something is rubbing it may affect the long-term durability of the reel. Lastly, the drag was not smooth out of the box. I dismantled mine and greased it with Cal's grease, and now it's smooth as butter. There are actually two carbon fiber friction washers in the drag stack, which is surprising given the reel's cost, but there are also three white nylon/plastic washers that offer little to nothing in the way of stopping power and are only there for show. And which aren't going to be very smooth without grease. All that said, for what you pay it seems to be a good or even great reel. Only time will tell how it holds up, but if nothing else it's a good reel for my son to learn to cast a baitcaster on. ... show more

I have used this reel for about a month now, and it has gone through hell. It has a suprisingly smooth break system and it cast very well. Have little issues with back lash (I use braid btw) and feels good in the hand.

Super easy to adjust and great for beginners. I had an old bait caster that was starting to discourage me from using bait casters. Saw this one on sale and decided to give it a try. I use to for fresh/salt water, super simple and reliable. I recommend using braided line

    • Star Drag Wheel Is Immovable

Without any experience using bait casting reels, I decided to buy this KastKing Centron reel for use with braided line, to cast light baits. It looks and feels like a quality product. I read the instructions, checked it out, and tried to understand the adjustments -- before adding the braided line, which is not cheap. All Stop. The star wheel was very stiff and difficult to turn. It seemed to have no effect on the drag. Now it is immovable. It is not turning with pressure that should turn it. I've owned a lot of reels and adjusted a lot of drag. I've adjusted drag with large fish running out the line. Sitting here at home, I cannot adjust drag on this reel. I want it to work, but that is not happening. This nice reel is useless to me. Update: Before I requested a replacement for the reel with a frozen drag wheel, an Amazon representative assured me that I would not be charged for a replacement reel because I am a non-driving senior who cannot drive to UPS to return the defective reel. The reel is not worth the cost of a taxi. So Amazon shipped me a replacement and then charged me for two reels. Unless you are able to return one of these defective KastKing reels, you might want to buy something else. DO NOT believe anything said by an Amazon representative. Amazon lied to me to make two sales of this crummy reel. If I ever go fishing with the Centron, it definitely will not be worth the money charged to my Amazon account or the time spent working the problems this reel created. ... show more
