  • Pine and birch cut very easily, couldn’t get it work for hard maple though
I bought 42mm and 60mm. 60mm one came in a very bad shape. I needed to chisel out inside the body because it had a large concave, on top of which had some glue-like stuff. Probably I got a bad one. I worked on it for a while. Kakuri Youtube channel has pretty good instructions so I just followed the step. Fortunately, it worked very well after setup is done. I could not plane hard maple board though, I kept getting tearouts regardless of the grain directions. Overall, I think this one is definitely a bang for the buck, especially with the lowered price. ... show more

  • A very nice plane
Based upon the one plane I've purchased, this is an excellent value. I have other Japanese planes purchased from other tool stores. None were as well made as this Kakuri brand. Like all Japanese planes, some minor sharpening and fitting were required before use, but now it make glassy smooth finish cuts with little effort. Yes, it is a much better tool than the ones I've purchased from the two major woodworking tool stores in the U.S.A. ... show more

  • Good value
I have been woodworking for over 20 years and this is my first Japanese plane. I researched the steps to setting up the plane. It was fairly simple and fast. Still learning who to use it but have experienced good results. I like the pull stroke action.

  • Another beautiful plane.
As I said about the smaller model: Out of the box, it was ready and sharp. I’ve seen them used on YouTube and they live up to the hype. Heavy blade holds the edge. The simplicity and ease of adjustment is amazing. And so much less then what a Varitas or Woodriver plane costs.

  • Don’t waste your money.
When this arrived I wasn’t expecting much, but to my surprise it was made with quality materials. The thing is, these don’t come ready to use. In fact, it takes quite a bit of fine tuning to get it working properly. I watched multiple videos on how to tune a kanna, and followed them step by step. Things were looking good as I progressed through them. But then I hit a major issue, one that makes the kanna an expensive paperweight. One of the key things is that the chip breaker must lie completely flat against the back of the blade without wobbling. So I had to flatten the back of the chipbreaker and also gently file down one of upper corners (the angled part that makes contact with the blade) because the chipbreaker had a slight wobble on the back of the blade. I did this as little as possible until it was flat and stable. Well that thinned down the profile of the blade and chipbreaker far enough that they now slide down and have no tension in the bed. The chipbreaker was so messed up originally that it was literally impossible to tune it without having this happen. So yeah, $70 down the drain. ... show more

  • “Life-altering tool”
I purchased this plane for my 21yo son for Christmas. He said it is “life-altering” change from the typical western block plane. It is now his favorite tool in his toolbox.

  • It may be new, but 120 seconds at 8000 grit makes it a dream tool!
Beautiful workmanship, mirror polish on the steel, completely flat!! It has its place on my tool wall and will be used, just because I like the way it feels.
