  • Blades have big enough waves to surf.
Size: 42 mm
I knew what I was getting into with this as I had watched setup videos before the purchase. Everything is fine and in good shape. Expect the irons. The chip breaker has a high spot in the middle of the blade back near the edge that is about 1/8 high and the cutting iron has both high and low spots on the edge that is off by an easy 1/16 front and back. I gave up on using my water stones and moved over to my diamond stones for flattening and have already spent about 8 hours on it and have yet to get them flat. At this point it's good enough even though it not really flat in any sense of the word. I have yet to get the chip breaker and iron to sit on each other with out light showing through. Yes I am feeling a bit frustrated. While this is my first Japanese plane I have lots of experience with setting up European planes and chisels both wood working chisels and carving gouges. So while not an expert I am pretty good at flattening blade backs. With all that said it does cut pretty good and leaves a nice finish but it constantly jams and needs to cleared out. Wood bits get stuck between the chipbreaker and iron. I use a bamboo skewer the kind you get at the supermarket for shish kebabs. Clearly I have to learn how to use it properly. ... show more

  • I'm never using a push plane again.
Size: 42 mm
I'm a Scoutmaster. Every year I turn 11 year olds loose with a $90 piece of western red cedar to make Greenland kayak paddles. Some of them are quater sawn boards that cut pretty easily. Some, like the one pictured, are not. This year I bought three of the Japanese pull planes. They worked so much better on all paddles.! They are easier to adjust, they are lighter and easier to handle. The cut angle is set and just works. We also had plenty of traditional push planes. Our adults, accomplished wood workers, spent so much time adjusting planes it was ridiculous when compared to the ease of use of the pull planes. My push planes are now simply on display. The tools I will use are these pull planes. ... show more

  • Unusable out of packaging
Size: 50 mm
When I got this, the wedge was inserted so far (and digging into the body a little on one side) that the bar was bending out slightly. It took 5 minutes of tapping it side to side with a hammer and punch to get it out. Even with the wedge completely removed, the blade (which is slightly tapered) was such a tight fit that it stopped maybe 1/4" short of the bottom. I thought the plane was defective, so I exchanged it for a new one but the replacement was the same. I had to remove a fair bit of wood from the top of the slot before I could even insert the blade all the way. After that, the plane works nicely. The mouth is relatively small, which you want for fine work. I bought this to use as a scrub plane though. I chiseled the mouth open a bit and sharpened the blade with a big sweeping camber (~3" radius.) It works great! The blade is very, very thick compared to the blade on vintage western planes and it keeps its edge really nicely, even making deep cross grain cuts. Overall, this was probably better than converting a vintage plane or a new budget plane with a blade that's thinner and possibly softer. But I was disappointed by how much work it took before I could even take a single shaving with a brand new plane. This would have been unusable for a someone just getting started in woodworking. ... show more

  • Amazing!
Size: 42 mm
Take the time to carefully set the blade. The instructions were decent enough to get me, a carpentry newbie, properly set up within 30 min. The blade is very sharp and easily shaves the wood. I actually like this better than my electric handheld planer! Extremely happy with this product.

  • Sweet!
Size: 42 mm
Half an hour after the mailman handed me this product, I was making shavings. From previous reviews, I understood it might be tough getting the blade/chip breaker loose initially. It was. After actually reading the instructions instead of looking at the pictures, the trick is striking the back of plane body Parallel to the iron. Saved a lot of sand paper with just the first use. Will now sharpen/hone & practice set up for much finer finishing. ... show more
