  • Recommended great buy value... Well built
Size: 8inch 20Ga.
I ordered this shear after reviewing various options online. I currently have a bench shear bought from Northern Tool - a Klutch plate 12” shear. It does well on larger, thicker metals, but does not support the metal and can leave some curl. My Use: My use is for a small, personal jewelry studio to be used for cutting silver, copper and brass to 18-16 gauge. While Pepe tools and others make excellent guillotine shears, they cost 800-1200$. Notwithstanding the fine products and excellent features, I can't afford them for my studio…. yet. Features The guillotine configuration and hold-down features of this product were essential for my use. The added feature of rollers for sheet and tubing are nice and work ok for my use. Break feature is less likely to be used by me. My Assessment: Very well constructed and sturdy. It works right out of the box. All you have to do is clean the shipping lubricant off, attach the handle, and mount to a bench/surface. Note that the handle may be secured readily to either side of the shear. It must be noted that the mounting holes do not allow ready mounting via a bolt from the top (short space), but several alternative approaches exist. (Mound bolt from below with securing nuts on top or insert a threaded rod secured with top nuts and secure with additional nuts from below the mounting surface.) I did find the shear needed two minor modifications for my use: 1 – Gluing on a ‘stop' for holding the cover from hitting the shear when opened when using the curling rollers. (See pictures of closed and open roller cover.) 2 – Adding another right-hand edge to align shorter lengths of sheet metal. (See brass attachment in photo.) I also epoxied a small cm scale for measuring feed of smaller pieces to be cut. (See picture of edge and of sample cut pieces.) Note – Even if you just use the supplied right-hand edge, you should adjust to precise square with a square machinist’s edge or drawing triangle. The shear cuts copper, brass and silver effortlessly … giving nice straight and squared cuts with NO CURL or lip. I can cut 1 mm lengths reproducibly. (See picture.) I’ve cut copper to 18 gauge and brass to 20 gauge. Additional Notes 1 – I don’t use the brake, so cannot comment on this function. 2 – The roller adjustment screws are not calibrated, so you must adjust “as needed" for your use. Overall, I found this a great and satisfying buy. I can recommend it as a less expensive alternative to more expensive jewelry tool versions. ... show more

  • Very nice well built machine
Size: 12inch 20Ga.
I received the machine very quickly, about a couple days after I ordered it. Came through fine, well packed, and very heavy! I unpacked it and got it set up in less than an hour. The machine I received has apparently been updated a little, the instructions called for installing some components with Allan screws using an Allan wrench. It came with bolts with knobs which makes it much easier to use. I was glad that it was well oiled with what seemed like an rust preventative on the metal parts but not on the finished surfaces. Very easy to clean and get ready to use. The casting is very nicely finished. I have a clock repair shop and the first thing I needed it for was to shear some 3/16" wide pieces of 0.001", 0.0015" and 0.002" brass shim stock, which was 6" wide. This is difficult to cut with hand shears or scissors. They have to be very sharp or the metal folds over between the blades. I was very impressed how cleanly and precisely it sheared these narrow strips. There was no raised cutting bur whatsoever. This machine also shears spring steel sheet shim stock in 0.004" and 0.005" thicknesses equally as well, and I didn't have to do any adjustments, just worked that well right out of the box. The other things this unit can do works just as well. Will bend and fold over metal with ease and puts a very nice finished edge on the sheet stock. It also works very well rolling sheet stock to make finished metal tubes. After using it a while I find myself looking for things to make with it. It makes a very nice addition to my shop, is just the right size and takes up very little bench space. I am very impressed with how nicely this is built and how it works. I am also impressed with the fact that it has two Zerk fittings to grease the main roller. Definitely a well built machine. ... show more

  • Check all bolts for looseness.
Size: 8inch 20Ga.
First one I recieved, the roller at the handle broke. Returned thru Amazon and recieved the replacement within a week. After closer examination, the handle that attaches to the roller was loose. Felt like the first one :(. Opened it up to find the retaing bolt was loose. Make sure you check all the other bolts too.. I haven't used it much yet, but this one is working great so far. Seems very sturdy. 👍 ... show more

  • Let's not get too excited
Size: 12inch 20Ga.
It's just ok. It was apparently dunked in machine oil before shipping so a huge greasy mess to set up. There are no operating instructions just some safety and basic assembly instructions which are not all that useful. There are many adjustments possible and no indication which or what order to make adjustments if you've not used something like this before. Every adjustment seems to require a different size tool. It does work once everything is properly adjusted, although the rollers on top are very hard to keep even. ... show more

  • Good Value for the Money
Size: 8inch 20Ga.
The tool arrived well packaged and undamaged. I had a small boat project waiting for it, and the tool arrived needing no immediate adjustment. The sheer worked perfectly on 0.050" aluminum. The slip roller needs some patience, but I think that is typical, especially when making non uniform curves. I can recommend this tool for the advanced hobbyist. ... show more

  • This product is junk!!! Do yourself and stay away!!!!
Size: 30" 20Ga.
When I first received the item it didn't work. So I've waited to take the time to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Nothing, the press arm doesn't travel more than 45 degrees and jams. Now I have a 300 plus pound pile of junk and I've got to figure out how to get rid of it. Also, to top it off, I purchased the stand from KAKA. They sent it to me in a couple brown paper bags. That was the packaging!!! The stand was all chipped and scratched up. I tried to put casters on the base flange where their are holes and when I put the 3 in 1 30" press on it, the flanges collapsed. This is the worst purchase I've made in many years. ... show more
