  • A comprehensive -- yet digestible -- guidebook
If you're getting ready for a backpacking trip abroad, you could spend hours browsing through endless blogs looking for tips and ideas. Or, you could just read this book. Dwight does a nice job covering all the bases -- from planning to packing to preparing for the best/worst situations. I gave this book a quick read before my most recent trip, and I felt like I had all of the information that I needed, plus a great list of additional tips, like which credit cards to consider using, which sites to book flights, and what to do if all of my stuff gets stolen abroad :). I've also gifted this book to a few friends as they prepared for their adventures. ... show more

  • Absolutely essential to have in your back pocket while traveling
I used to buy the typical travel books (i.e. Lonely Planet), but I felt like I was just doing the typical travel list and not experiencing the culture. This Joyful Traveling book changed all of that. It really gives off-the-beaten path insight on how to really slow down and take in the culture, which has given me memorable experiences of my travels ever since. A must-have guide for any trip! ... show more

  • A candid exploration of how one can open up their heart to the world
Traveling takes courage. Solo traveling more so. And doing all that and writing about it in a way that makes the reader be able to see, hear and feel everything the author can takes what even the most courageous are afraid of - letting a stranger explore their mind as a tourist explores the Louvre. In this short and sweet compendium of his sojourns, Dwight has done just that. This book is so much beyond a set of tips and tricks, which it could be easily mistaken for. It is a window into the author's soul and a reel of endless frames that change city, country and currency - but never give up the feeling of pure joy Dwight has felt in all of his travels abroad. Its a healthy dose of yin and yang. The book urges you to befriend a stranger, trust your instincts, embrace the contingencies. Yet, it shows you the value of planning and preparedness. It tells you the facts - well documented tales of events that have happened across continents. Yet, it also shows you the author's take of a deeper meaning behind them, when a sense of purpose superstitiously runs into God's will. From walking with blistered feet on the Camino to eating at a kaiten sushi restaurant in Japan, the author's experiences will leave you at times cracking up, at others a tad emotional, but always wanting to get up an explore. ... show more

  • Very Comprehensive!
The author of Joyful Traveling is clearly an up and coming millennial version of the legendary Rick Steves - displaying his brand of personalized travel in the digital world of smartphones, social media and reward credit cards :) When I travel overseas as a solo traveler, I’ve tended to follow the herd when it comes to places to visit. But oftentimes, I’ve left these places not having fully experienced the local culture or the heart/sense of a certain place. Joyful Traveling provides the type of approach and pace that I’ve been looking for: a framework for making the most of foreign travel in the most personalized and cost effective way possible - before, during, and after the trip. The book goes into almost every logistical detail about the planning, executing, and memorializing of a foreign trip. It’s so impressive in that regard that I’ve even relied on sections of this book as checklists for any upcoming foreign trip. Granted a reader might not follow every travel tip in this book, but the logistical and narrative details behind these tips will remind the reader of all the different things he or she must consider to have a truly personalized foreign trip at his or her own pace. I don’t usually write product reviews, but Joyful Traveling has been exceptional enough for me to take the time to write this and to recommend that you buy this book! ... show more

  • A great pre-travel read!
A friend gave me a copy of this quick and easy-to-read guide on traveling, and I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys traveling. I consider myself a pretty experienced traveler and proud to say that I also use some of the more nuanced tips that Asuncion outlines in his book (hello, Rick Steves free audio tours!). This book neatly outlines everything one should consider and prepare for ahead of international travel. What sets this book apart from other travel books are Asuncion's candid reflections and perspectives on what it means to travel and how to truly experience and capture the beauty of it. The colored pages of his own Facebook posts and photos help share this. While I can only aspire to achieve traveling to all the places he has been, I enjoyed traveling with him through the pages of this book and learning how his travel tips came to be from personal trial and error (and unfortunate circumstances). Give this book a read! ... show more

  • An entertaining yet practical read
In the midst of the pandemic, I've been itching to get out and go see the world. Joyful Traveling presents a comprehensive set of guidelines for making the most of your traveling experience. In addition to being practical, the book is sprinkled with colorful stories of the author's travels, which help to convey the importance of following the advice in the book. I found the soba noodle story particularly entertaining, and it helps to drive home the principle of experiencing cuisine the way locals might, rather than simply going for touristy venues. ... show more

  • A Must-Have for Your Next Trip
As a young adult, I'm always on the lookout for my next big adventure. After reading Joyful Traveling, I'm convinced my next trip will be the best. Dwight expertly combines valuable, insightful tips with quick, easily digestible explanations and photos of his personal experiences. I definitely had some travel jealousy as I read (Antarctica!?!). As I accumulate my travel kit, I've been notoriously indecisive when picking which items to purchase - Dwight's recommended travel necessities will definitely be the first place I look going forward. I particularly enjoyed the "Being There" section and hope to make my next trip my most culturally immersive yet. This is definitely a book I'll be keeping nearby and referencing often! ... show more
