  • The one book I still travel with
The Lonely Planet is now the only guide I travel with, it's saved my bacon more than once. I always travel with the actual book, it's easier to flip back and forth or highlight. Plus nobody wants to steal a book and it never runs out of battery when you need it the most.

  • Overloaded Yet Underwhelming - A Disappointing Guide to Japan
In an era where guidebooks face stiff competition from digital resources, the newest edition of "Lonely Planet: Japan" manages to disappoint on multiple fronts. In an effort to comprehensively cover Japan's vast geographical and cultural landscape, this book results in being too thick yet, paradoxically, surprisingly devoid of depth or substance. While the book dutifully includes all the areas of Japan, the descriptions provided for each are cursory at best. Instead of offering insights into the rich tapestry of Japan's culture, history, and contemporary scene, the text bounces briefly from place to place, without offering the reader a chance to truly appreciate the uniqueness of each location. The sections on history are a case in point - while the inclusion of historical context is important in understanding Japan's culture, the overemphasis on seemingly irrelevant names creates a dense fog of information that may leave the average reader lost. Instead of focusing on key historical events and their impact, the authors choose to pack the text with an overwhelming list of historical figures, leaving the readers floundering in a sea of unconnected names. The recommendations for dining and accommodations feel stale and out-of-date, and it's clear that the authors are yet to adapt to the modern age. The age of Google Maps and Booking.com is upon us, and it seems redundant to provide the same kind of information readily available on these platforms. Where guidebooks can truly shine is in the curation of high-quality content to appreciate the culture and history - aspects that are harder to glean from a simple Google search. Yet, this book utterly fails in this respect. Instead of providing a sense of what's most interesting or meaningful about a place or city, the book seems to scatter superficial facts with poor coherence. As for the writing style, the use of British English might pose some minor hurdles for readers more accustomed to American English. However, the language is not the main issue here. Rather, it is the superficial approach adopted by the authors, who seem more focused on quantity than quality. In summary, "Lonely Planet Japan" is a guidebook that seems to have lost its way. Its approach is scattered and lacks depth, failing to provide a meaningful insight into the culture and history of this fascinating country. The book would greatly benefit from a more focused, substantive approach and a better understanding of the needs of modern travellers. ... show more

  • Japan travel
Print too small. Great quality, prompt delivery. A tad heavy for backpack.

  • Amazing travel book.
I have been reading this for about 2 weeks. We are planning a trip to Japan and looking for locations to visit. This book is well organized and has a lot of locations to look at. Would recommend as a travel guide.
