  • Good basic work out
First, let me preface this review with the fact that I didn't workout regularly pre-pregnancy. I've been blessed genetically, and that combined with a crazy schedule and, admittedly, plain laziness, I rarely found time for exercise except for a pilates class a few times a month. Also, I ordered this dvd after I gave birth and it was delivered after my doctor released me for exercise at 6 wks so I didn't get to use the exercises she demonstrates in the hospital. However, I've used the main work out and found that it is generally good overall. It helps if you have experience with some basic dance moves (she incorporates basic ballet moves in the work out)so you understand the form/balance, as well as some basic pilates, for the same reason. I don't feel she does a really good job of explaining the neutral spine, and, for the benefit of beginners, it would help if she demonstrated modified versions of some of the movements. For example, the pilates roll down/roll up can be very challenging, and requires a lot of stomach strength that tends to be lacking after pregnancy, let alone a c-section - there are modified ways of performing this exercise, as I learned in past pilates classes, that helps develop stomach strength without risk of injury, etc. I would not recommend this work out for someone who considers themselves advanced as far as exercising goes. It isn't likely to be a challenge, but may still be a good resource for exercise suggestions while still in the hospital/immediately following birth. I would recommend it to anyone who is a beginner (as long as you have some basic pilates knowledge, as I mentioned before) to someone intermediately skilled. The workout was quite challenging to me when I first started it about 6 wks ago but since then I've mixed up my routine to include other forms of exercise; now it still provides a good, somewhat challenging workout without being too boring. It has definitely contributed to getting me back into my pre-baby wardrobe. Also, check out the book "Bounce Back Into Shape After Baby" by Caroline Creager. This is a GREAT book. I found the information contained within to be very thorough and helpful. It includes information for exercising following either c-section or vaginal delivery. ... show more

  • Great for pregnancy and recovery from C-section
I've been meaning to write this for 6+ months because I am so grateful for this DVD. I did this program 2-3x a week starting second trimester before my son was born (I was too nauseaus during 1st trimester to do anything). I credit it for my fast, good recovery from my C-section. Yes, it is long. But it is worth it - particularly the leg lunges. And 2-3x a week seemed to be enough. (and my son was born early so I did not do it all 3rd tri). My legs were strong enough to get me out of bed relatively easily. And, particularly because of the leg lunge work, I knew how to lift myself and my baby using my (now stronger) legs and not my back or my tender abdomen. Jennifer is easy to follow, and they have a good demonstration for all 3 trimesters at the same time (though the 2nd tri person doesn't look 2nd tri!) This is not a dripping sweat DVD, and I am not an avid exercises or pilates person (Pilates for Dummies was enough for me pre-pregnancy, which I have also reviewed). But this was a good, basic work out, it made me feel good during pregnancy, and gave me the tone to have a good recovery afterwards (alas, I bought, but have not tried her C-section recovery DVD - not enough time as a stay at home Mom! I'm going back to Pilates for Dummies at home because it is shorter). I only wish the Amazon posting had warned me before purchase that I needed a ball, a stool, a pole, and some weights. But I made do with a rolled up towel for a ball, a paint brush extension rod (the one you screw the brush into) and a small step stool (I already had 2 lbs weights, but you can use books or something like that). ... show more

  • Slow paced and too easy
This would work great for someone who is slow to recover from their C-section. I, however, was up and moving the day of my C-section and left the hospital the day after. I was then approved to start riding horses and exercising regularly after 2 weeks of recovery.

  • Not for beginners
I'm sure this is a great video for someone who is already comfortable with yoga. It was more yoga than pilates to me, and I am used to pilates. Also, some of the moves were uncomfortable for me. She narrates for 1st and 2nd trimesters to do certain moves and 3rd trimesters a more modified version. This could have worked in my first pregnancy since I didn't really start to show until I was around 5 months. However, this is my 2nd and by 5 months my belly is already quite large, making some of the poses quite difficult and uncomfortable. The dvd also requires props, such as a dowel, some free weights, and a chair. I could find a chair in my house that would work, but was disappointed that I had to go purchase other things because that was not written on the dvd cover. Or if it was, I certainly couldn't find it (I checked). However, if you are experienced with yoga and already have what is necessary, I am sure that you will enjoy the workout. ... show more

  • Tedious
Seems ok, but it is ridiculously long and doesn't seem that coherent. It jumps around a lot and makes you feel like it is taking FOREVER. I am 34 weeks and this is just not helpful to me. I find it annoying. Plus, you need all sorts of weird equipment. For example, a long stick?? Now where would I get that? Weird. I would get the 10minute pilates solution before this one for sure. I've done pilates with an instructor on the equipment, but can't afford anymore...so the principles of pilates seem to be there, but overall the workout is tedious. If you have lots of time and don't mind the jumping from random exercise to exercise without much flow, then this isn't THAT bad. ... show more
