  • I returned this - but only because they already had it!
Dallas holds a special place in my and my 48 year old son's life. When he was old enough to join me watching back when it was new, we just had a blast, having moved 400 miles to live close to Dallas. So of course for his birthday this year, I bought the entire set! I just knew he'd love it. Not knowing he'd already bought it a few years ago and his family had all watched it. If I weren't so old, I'd have kept it for myself, but....no. Anyway, I still recommend it highly! ... show more

  • Who Shot JR?
I watched this show every Friday night in the 1980's. If I had to be elsewhere when it was broadcast, I would record in on my trusty VCR and watch it when I got home. Imagine, the lovable male star of "I Dream Of Jeannie" (Major Nelson) becoming "the man America loved to hate - J.R. Ewing." It was one of the first "prime time soap operas" on TV. ... show more

  • Latest 2020 complete DVD Collection Region 2 UK PAL release and guide to all available versions
I am reviewing the set pictured on Amazon released in 2020 in the UK, it occasionally pops up for Prime Shipping from third party sellers who imported the item from the UK. Yes, this is a Region 2 PAL collection that includes all seasons and the Movie Collection on 105 (!) single-sided discs. You need a multi-region DVD player to play it, it can also be played back on computers with VLC, for example. (There exists a Complete Series of Dallas for Region 1 in the US consisting of 57 discs ASIN: ‎B00FF1UNJM but I would not recommend it, since it is simply re-packaging the old individual seasons together, meaning you are getting the original problematic double-sided discs, some in digipacks, except for Season 14 and The Movie Collection that was originally released as single-sided discs. Sure, the individual seasons are getting pricier, so it could be a good deal to at least own the complete show, since Amazon Prime IMDB channel can disappear again any time, and who wants commercials anyway? But that would be the set to get for North-American viewers who want Region 1 original releases of the complete series). Back to the actual item. The Complete DVD Collection has been released three times now in the UK, again this is the UK PAL 2020 repackage of the original 2012 release. The original release was in a bigger box with the show stars pictured on it and each season was put inside its own clamshell packaging, more durable but it is out of print. The 2016 re-release used a much more compact re-packaging with a cowboy hat but all seasons were digipacks, prone to tear and wear. The latest 2020 release I am reviewing consists of five bigger clamshell boxes containing various seasons bundled together, which some may not like. There are multiple discs sometimes stacked upon each other and the episode guide on the back of the covers is really not readable without removing all discs, in fact I ended up reversing the covers, since the DVDs themselves also do not include the episode titles (true for all UK releases). The biggest reason to get this release is that the all discs are single-sided, meaning no flipping needed and they should last a long time, the flipper discs especially for early seasons were prone to freezing and playback issues. For the first 9 seasons you get generally fewer episodes per disc than the US releases, between two and four, it should lead to a bit of a better picture. Seasons 10 to 13 are just the same as their double-sided counterparts were but on twice as many, 6 discs. The SoapNet reunion bonus feature from 2003 is not available on the First & Second Season on any overseas Region 2 releases, but you do get the audio commentaries on Seasons 1&2 and 3 (that they dropped for the US Region 1 single-sided quickly disappearing 2018 Warner re-releases and 2019 also discontinued TimeLife re-releases). From Season 9 on, you also get more audio options and subtitles on the 2020 UK set but the set sadly contains the Region 2 cuts that plagued the original releases, sometimes everywhere, sometimes in overseas releases only, e.g.: Season 7 - Episode 25 - Strange Alliance (all DVD releases have a scene missing and episode is shorter, just 43 minutes, a syndicated version. The Amazon Prime stream apparently has this scene between Jessica and Miss Ellie). Season 9 Sitting Ducks (A scene missing on Region 2 releases, US release is complete). Season 10 Return to Camelot (scenes missing on all releases but the stream version may be complete?) Season 11 First episode has a scene missing on all DVD releases, even in streaming. Season 14 Conundrum on Region 2 is a different cut from Region 1, missing some scenes, different preview. I hope there will be a better single-sided US Region 1 repackage sometime but until then the Region 2 package and holding on to some Region 1 season sets when there are differences will do. The best would be a Blu Ray release, even if only the early seasons. So, buy this Region 2 set if you need a single-sided backup or want more audio options for later seasons, need the commentaries. The set will arrive with a huge sticker explaining that it is a Region 2 release. ... show more

  • Quality
It was great rewatching Dallas! The quality of some of the DVDs was iffy. On season 13, I noticed that the mouth movements didn't match up with speech, so that was kinda distracting. And the theme music was off. But , all in all , it was still watchable.
