Features

  • Contains a plastic bag of 3.52 ounce Bonito flakes (jikabiyaki honkatsu)
  • Could be used as a base stock for soups and broths
  • Product of Japan

Description

3.3 ounces. (100 gram) bag. Although bonito is one of the most important fish in Japanese cuisine, it is rarely eaten as the entre of a meal. Instead, the dark, oily fish is carefully dried and shaved into very fine, intensely flavored flakes known as katsobushi. These salty flakes are combined with kombu seaweed to make dashi, the base stock for most Japanese soups and broths. Dashi is present in so many Japanese foods that the cuisine would hardly be the same without it. The strong, clean fish flavor of katsobushi makes it a wonderful seasoning for wakame seaweed salads, for seasoning chilled tofu, and for sprinkling over steamed or sauted vegetables.

  • Cat likes it, but it arrived with the bag punctured
Shipped with zero padding, so the bag got damaged in transit. The cat says the flavor is good. I think there is less in the bag for this brand than some others I’ve bought.

  • Delicious
I honestly thought this was going to be really salty. But in fact this is very rich in flavor. It melts in your mouth.

  • HAPPY CATS..HAPPY PEOPLE..HAPPY SALES!!!
These Bonito Flakes are absolutely delicious and both my cat and I snack on them right out-of-the-bag every day! They arrived in perfect condition (large thin flakes that have a very fresh scent, proving the flesh was sliced when it was firm and just-caught). I have decades of experience with canning, smoking, freezing, and preparing dishes with West Coast albacore tuna, which is akin to bonito. I was privileged in the 1970's to cook for the 2-man crew of a unique schooner/troller that was set up to long-line these fast and spectacular fish 200mi. off the Pacific coast. That fish was gutted and cleaned right on deck and put in the hold to quickly chill it. The resulting product when fish are respected in this way tastes and smells nothing like "commercial" store-bought tuna. (The closest thing I've found is Costco's Kirkland brand.) These flakes are the "real deal" and make wonderful broth, soups and many other Asian and Polynesian dishes. Just melting a few yummy flakes on my tongue gives me an immediate protein rush when I come in out of the extreme cold weather we've had in the GA Mtns. (of all places) and my comical cat races up&down and all-around with each snack. I do have one caveat though: If you are spoiled w/ Amazon Prime like me, do order early and give it an extra week to arrive. This is a bargain @$8.29 w/Free Shipping if you are isolated away from the luxury of specialty stores, etc.. Also, just so you know, I trust Japanese food products and would not have bought this product from another foreign country. HAPPY CATS!..HAPPY PEOPLE!..HAPPY SALES! ... show more

  • Yummy for humans and cats!
This has a delicious smokey barbecue taste with a slight hint of fish. But it has a very strong fish smell with a hint of barbecue. They are not crunchy. They are like soft strips of edible tissue paper. I read they are used to flavor soups and sauces. You can mix them with salad or noodle dishes. You can use them as a seasoning for vegetables. But I got this for my cat. I wanted to entice my cat to eat more wet food. I crumbled bonito flakes on top of the wet food on my cat's plate. He would not eat the bonito flakes, and he would not eat his wet food. Then I put bonito flakes on the floor next to his plate. He eagerly ate the bonito flakes off the floor and gobbled them up. My cat loves bonito flakes, and he will eat them anywhere except on top of wet food. On the days that I give my cat bonito flakes, he seems to itch and scratch himself. I think he might be allergic to fish. The language on the bag is in Japanese, but the ingredients are in English. It says, "Ingredients: dried bonito. (Contains fish)." ... show more

  • Purrfect for all ..~!~
We have tried 4 brands of these that I can think of , making this one the 5th ,..I think that this one is perfect , taste wise, no overly fishy smell or taste, and the best no added salt { no need } but some do..I think this out of all is my personal favorite...Both for the perfect breakdown , it is meant to go from a powdery into a more solid sliver of fish..Not meant to be chewy , and these are not..Purrfect...~!~ Update : July 22 , 2013 As I have run out of these flakes and waiting for more to come in.. I've tried to find an equal..I found one in a bigger bag , same delicious taste..Those go for about 2'xs the price of these { Marutomo Katsuo @ 16 oz. for $ 26.15 ) they are pinkish -red and keep the same consistency to the bottom of the bag { like these } and are the very best..If you chew a piece and it is slightly tough { chewy , too chewy } , or a little bit salty check out this brand ..I love to eat these right out of the container , with a couple pairs of eyes staring at me..Of course I share..~!~ ... show more
