I used to descale a Rinnai water heater. Follow the instructions on the package and you should be good. I dont know how the inside of the water heater looks like but i could see the effects on it on the small copper fittings of the pipe from the motor to the tank. I used this recently on my new tankless gas water heater to remove any build-up inside. The water heater had only run for about 6 months. We have terribly hard city water. I had my doubts at first, but after 30 minutes the bucket with the sump pump containing the flush mixture was completely black. It appeared to be a bucket of jet-black paint. I also helped my neighbor flush his, but with white vinegar. Vinegar is an optional, cheaper substitute but didn't seem to remove quite the same amount of build-up.
