This is a great set, with both round and flat jawed Vise-grips. My only wish is that plastic tray that they came in would fit in my toolbox drawer, it would be a great organizer. The tray is even too large for a truck box. Perhaps a perfect organizer for a Jobox.

    • Great starter set for homeowner/DIY, not quite the same as what you grew up with though.

Locking pliers are very much a staple tool in any garage or shop. After having to rely on c-clamps or other not the right tools, I had been watching for a good set. I ended up picking these and a handful of other Irwin tools during a sale, but Amazon has consistently been far less expansive than any of the big box stores locally for Irwin and the in-house brands. I was drawn to these as they are the classic no-frills Vise-Grips that I grew up using. They may not have fancy release mechanisms but as so far they have been able to lock and hold whatever I am working on, or need to secure, without slipping. The quality seems fine for my purposes as someone who performs all my own automotive work, most of my home improvement and repair, and some welding here and there. As some of the reviewers mentioned these don't feel as nice as the older Irwin Vise-Grips. I grew up using those both at some of my early jobs and at home and there is a heft and feel difference. However, for the price and what I was able to find online and in stores these seem to fit the bill for what I need. and so far they have not shown any wear or had any issues. I have bought some of the cheaper products when I needed to make one-off tools and those would actually warp when being used with a good bit of force. So far these have held up, so while they may not be quality of before, as so far they are still good enough. As I continue to mention in tool reviews, if you rely on these to earn your money, you probably should invest in getting the best you can buy. ... show more

Been watchin these for some time and when I got notification of a price drop, I couldn't resist (56.00). Good Vice Grips are extremely hard to find. Especially "Made in the USA" (Which none are, even these but...). I have several types and brands but was getting low and some were worn out. I ordered 1 day and received within 5 days. Package was clean and undamaged. Opened them to find a decent set of Vice Grips that seem heavier and better than some of the ones I currently use. The tray they came in was not what I expected. I expected some cheap barely-hold-together-plastic packaging. WHAT I FOUND WAS A VERY NICE HOLDER (17" X 25) . One that will fit into a mechanics tool chest (I like "shadowed tools in trays). I’ve used vice grips for years, these work fine however I think overall quality has went down. Old ones 10-20 yrs are polished and heavy duty built, these seem to be like powder coat aluminum basically like comparing bolt steel tempered vs the stuff that snaps in half, like craftsman in 90s vs craftsman now… works fine good value but a little skeptical on durability as they seem to have cut corners in production compared to my nice old ones. ... show more
