  • Not a Brinsea alternative
Original content edited 05/04/2024 post 1st hatch to improve advice provided and the results of the hatches obtained from the two units we purchased. Additions to original review in bold text. OK, this does not match the features or temp control performance of a Brinsea Octagon incubator, one of which we own. But it is considerably less expensinve and unless you're hatching some serious;y high value or rare chicks it CAN BE all a hobby hatcher is ever going to need IF THEY RECEIVE A GOOD ONE once they figure out the best way to use it. Here are the things we like: 1. A good size for hatching a dozen chicken eggs; 2. Includes holders for both small (quail) and larger (chicken) eggs; 3. Includes a simple humidity control system which works well enough; 4. Includes a basic forced air temperature control system; 5. The automated egg turning works well; 6. The controls are simple. Here are the issues to be aware of: 1. The water bottles provided for humidity control are very small. You will likely need to refill them every 2 to 4 days. If that frequency isn't a problem for you I think this unit is a good choice; 2. The unit has insufficient insulation to establish a constant temperature throughout the unit. You need to insulate it. Simply draping a towel over the top of it to completely cover the dome and water bottles all the way down to the table top appears to provide enough and still allows the incubator to breath. We are able to make this recommendation because we place 2 Govee Bluetooth temp loggers in each of our incubators and brooders for continuous temp monitoring with no need to remove the insulating towel or incubator cover. The loggers are telling us this approach works well enough and we highly recommend them for anyone hatching eggs. They are available on Amazon. 3. There is some variability between units on how well they maintain a "constant" temperature. We have 2 of these. The first one maintains the temperature within a 0.5 F temp range which is good, approaching what is acheived by our Octagon. The second maintains it in a 1.3 F temp range which is bad. These are located next to each other on a shelf in a room kept at 60 F; 4. The second of the units we received had clearly been opened, used and returned. If we hadn't had an immediate need for it we would have sent it back both for how it looked (top scratched and slightly warped, unit dirty) and for how poorly it controls the temperature compared to the first unit. 5. The temp setting on the incubator and the actual temperature inside the incubator are off by up to 1 F on the two units we received. That's not ideal but if you place a couple of small temp loggers in the incubator for a day and then compare the average temp recorded over the last hour or two you can then adjust the temp setting on the incubator to acheive the temp you want (versus what it might say on the display). Most of the issues described above are common among sub $300 incubators and compensating for MOST OF them is easy EXCEPT FOR POOR CONSTANT TEMP CONTROL. I couldn't tell you if the performance of our first unit or of the second one is typical for this brand and model but we're talking about the difference between "very good" and just "OK". POST HATCH NOW KNOW THE POOR CONSTANT TEMP CONTROL OF THE 2ND UNIT WAS NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR AN "OK" LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE. For most hobby hatchers OK is likely to be good enough. BUT OUR 2nd UNIT FAILED TO ACHEIVE THAT LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE. We'll know fairly soon how badly the temp fluctuations of the second unit have impacted chick development, hatch rate. and post hatch survival. If it's dire we'll update this review Mid May. 05/04/2024 Update Our hatch rate from the higher performing unit was 50% which is lower than expected but not bad for quail eggs shipped to us by mail and could reflect a low fertilization rate or losses during the shipment. Our hatch rate from the lower performing unit was 15% and the few that did hatch were distinctly weaker than their peers from the higher performing unit with more concise temperature control. Everything else was equal with the two units placed next to each other during the incubation period. The performance of the 2nd unit can only be classified as a fail and we will not use it again. The poor temperature control of that unit was clearly the cause of the much lower hatch rate. Humidity control on both units was fine but we did indeed need to refill the water bottles every couple of days. The egg turning systems of both units also worked just fine. Final conclusion - only purchase if you are willing to test on arrivel using a temperature data logger such as the one recommended in the original review. If you find the temperature control provided while the unit is insulated under a towel matches the performance of our 1st unit it is well worth keeping and if looked after may well be the only incubator you ever need to buy and at a bargain price (at $85). However, if you find the temperature control is not as good as that my recommendation is you return it as a faulty product unable to provide the conditions required to acgeive an acceptable hartch rate. ... show more

  • Would not recommend
The incubator will not hold a consistent temperature unless you wrap it in a blanket. It did not come with Styrofoam or anything like that. I would also recommend keeping a thermometer on the inside, because the one that came on the incubator is not accurate. I would send back, but my eggs are coming today so I need it. ... show more
